cheevers was the nhl goalie in game 3 and he sucked. i was a bruins season ticket holder and saw him play most of his career and he was consistent. he was flashy and flamboyant, and he might make some great saves. but he was always beatable and he really never stole games for you. he was an ordinary goaltender if you look at his numbers, who was fortunate to play behind some powerful teams. he didn't enhance their game by any means.

Bohoo! If this was the case, then the NHL club teams should have always beaten the touring Soviet club teams. But it didn't quite happen, did it. Even the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens got their butts kicked by CSKA Moscow (who even weren't as strong as the full Soviet national team) in the 1985-86 Super Series. And why couldn't USA (or Canada) repeat their feat at the 1984 Olympics, if 'playing together for a year' was all that was needed to beat the 'commiecunts'?

aran125 What about NHL All Stars vs. KHL All Stars for the All Star game. That would be awesome if they did that for one year. What I really think the NHL should do is rotate the All Star game format. For example, one year Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference. One year, Fantasy Draft (which is the current format). One year, North America vs. The World. And one year, have NHL All Stars vs. KHL All Stars. People always complain about the format becoming dull, so rotate them. That would be a great way to keep the All Star game fresh and interesting, without getting rid of it completely. Well, I'm done with my rant about the All Star game. Thanks for listening.

Imagine how much history changes if the NHL All-Stars had held on to win game 2. The Challenge Cup would have been an embarrassing sweep for the Soviets, Tretiak develops a reputation of not delivering against the "big boys", the Soviets probably go into the Olympics with a giant chip on their shoulder and probably blow out everyone in the Lake Placid games and the "Miracle On Ice" might never happen.

@Jim Dandy Meritless and senseless one-line comment. You're mistaken if you think the mid-70s Flyers could have beaten the 80s Oilers. The Oilers were the best offensive team in the history of hockey , and likely North American organized sports. The Oilers averaged 5.5 goals/game at that time. Philly would have certainly made the games choppy with their notorious dirty play. However, the Oilers PP was lethal, as was their 4-on-4 play in the open ice (so good that the NHL changed the 4-on-4 rule because of the Oilers). The young Oilers would have skated around the bullies bs hockey. Glen Sather was a goon as a player in the mid-70s and knew how the bullies worked. He kept really good fighters on the roster like Dave Smenko (won a fight with the all time bruising legend Bob Probert) and Dave Lumley. That is besides a young Messier-a beast, as well as young Marty McSorely . Glen Anderson was also a really good fighter when needed. Smenko, Messier, and McSorely were all better fighters than Schultz. In summary, the mid-70s flyers would be a Stanley cup-less, dirty after-thought if they had to face the mid-80s Oilers. The Oilers were a true dynasty.

I swear the Soviet teams communicated via mental telepathy, each one knew where the others were and their passing was a thing of beauty. But, the Soviet teams, IMO, also transformed the game to help make the NHL what it is today. I'm only sorry that these three never got the chance to come to North America and make some decent money.
And, consider this: their loss at the 1980 Olympics stimulated the growth of hockey in the USA where a kid from Phoenix, AZ, like Auston Matthews started playing the game and became a star.

Dryden and Cheevers worst choices as goaltenders against this Soviet team to begin with. Might as well have Liut in goal for the NHL. The NHL didn't have a good variety choice for goalies and defenses at this time with Parent, Orr and Others retired or way past their prime.

@@BBQFanNo1 "Worst choices"? What was wrong with Dryden's play in this Series? He made many big saves, and didn't let in any soft goals. He didn't get blown out 8-1 like Liut did, or 6-0, either, for that matter. His GAA was 3.50. Tretiak's was 4.00. Also, to say that there wasn't "a good variety choice" for defence, when the "big 3" for Montreal played, plus Denis Potvin and Borje Salming, shows ignorance of the great talent that was there.

There are NO excuses. The Russian team was the best team in this series. I have to say, I was very impressed by how the Soviet team used the body to play a clean physical game. They were most impressive. I don't know why they didn't use this same tactic against the USA at he Olympics. There must have been something else going on. Not taking anything away from the Americans, but the Soviet team looked disjoined against the Americans.

Team USA coach Herb Brooks came up with a game that threw their game right back at them. It seems like nobody thought of doing that to them until Brooks did.
Also the Soviet players said they didn't respect their Team USA opponent and you can't do that in hockey. They also forgot about the thrill of victory. They won so much they didn't feel it anymore. You can see them in awe after the loss to Team USA at Lake Placid.
