This is why I've got respect for phuzzy, he does this game the fun way.
Me and my friends have been playing for years. We have set roles and rarely board, two of us are amazing at firing cannons and the other one is amazing in steering and tactics. He constantly thinks of ways to outsmart the opponend and we almost always win. These type of fights are crazy fun and way more fun than boarding and spawncamping waiting for the ship to sink.
If you fight high mmr crews in hg, that won't work. In comp gally fights we laugh at each other when someone sinks to pressure
@@Crysalus Yes but hourglass is an entirely different (and, come on, worse) environment than the normal game. It rarely gives you opportunity to play around terrain like rocks, forts, and islands, and turns every fight into a 1 for 1 slug fest. And I'm in that high mmr range, which is unfortunate, because it's boring as hell how every fight plays out almost exactly the same, only occasionally winning or losing one because someone gets rare'd to make things "interesting" (frustrating).

The hand-to-hand combat isn't that good in SoT. Unfortunately the Top Dev's at Rare never really realised the full potential that this game could have achieved as a Naval Combat game. It's a classic case of trying to please everyone instead of focusing on your strengths. It's a shame because an otherwise decent game could have become benchmark classic for the ages. Missed chance.
That's my biggest complaint, yeah. Hand-to-hand just feels inconsistent and there's no oomph to it. I'm not sure how to put it. It feels like nothing. Hitting an opponent feels exactly the same as missing and that is just unfun. But the naval combat is great. The audio cues for landing cannonballs, the explosions on impact, the masts falling. It looks and feels great. And there's strategy to it, too, unlike HtH, where it's just who is faster and has better reflexes.
While I do think that naval combat is definitely the better part of PvP, I feel like without HtH, fights would quickly become repetitive (especially in hourglass)
As a player with ~1400 who only does pvp now, HtH combat is what keeps me playing. Wiping a crew with a clean deckshot will always be exiting, shooting long range cannons for 30 minutes straight not so much.
Yeah this is my biggest disappointment with this game and you hit it on the head. I wish you had to deal a certain amount of damage before the ladders dropped. No other game offers naval combat like this, but I can get the pvp that it offers in every other game. So many players just turn this into a COD clone.
A pirate game without boarding sounds kinda pointless imo. If you want a naval combat game, maybe try world of warships.
Jokes aside, i wish the HtH combat would be consitent, bc it just sucks to get backtrack-onetapped. And trust me, when you try to improve your hth you will fall in love with the killing sound after you skeeted somebody or just sworddiffed him (and yes, sword CAN take skill, if played in the right way. Not as much as dg tho). It is worth it, trust me

I remember coming across some really sweaty crew, like no cosmetics on, just doublegunning all the way. The funny part was, we didn't know they're sweats until a while later because of their naval being so bad to the point of them sinking within 2 minutes.

For a lot of those board-dependent crews, you just have to watch for them shooting boarders at you for a while and wait for them to blow their chainshots and you've got them back on their heels.

I have a friend who just started the game two weeks ago. From other games, his hand to hand combat is incredible, and far superior to my own. My naval tactics are well developed from my 450 hours of play. Together, using tactics like this and some skill related crew resource management, our sloop terrorizes the whole server with methods almost exactly like this. He's already nearly maxed in reapers, and just a few days ago, he, I, a veteran player, and an ultra new player stole a 250k loot stack off of a galleon with again, the same method. It still has merit as a strategy!

Not me. I'm a mid tier player with an unusually high amount of naval skill.
And why, in a million years, would you EVER take from the landfill which is hourglass? In the few runs of hourglass that I've done (with the veteran, mind you), I've encountered only people WORSE than those in regular adventure. Usually, 4 cannonballs is enough to sink the guys, and even if you do reach a higher elo (which SoT doesn't tell you what your elo is, which is unhelpful), you just start encountering cheaters, which make the game no longer fun.

I remember in the early days using Thieves Haven with some tricky maneuvering to lose a tail & get the drop on them. Pre harpoon days. Those were some wild adventures!
I think it's sad too, boarding is great at times but ppl solely use it now. I out cannoned brigs and galleons, but they had to board me with 2 - 4 people to beat me. Double boards and your screwed.

For me it's the complete opposite.
I can do naval combat just fine when it comes to aiming cannons, harpooning their ship to bring us in for a ram or more accurate shots, but it's only when they board or we board do things fall apart.
it's mostly down to the lag the servers give off, where enemy players jitter around like the Flash on crack, or how said players bunny hop around like they are playing Halo 2001, and that honestly throws me completely off (this is mostly because I used to play Doom and Quake back in the days, so seeing ppl just bunny hop all the time became both annoying and irksome to deal with, not to mention sweaty).

I just quit when I’m getting sunk. Better than starting without anything on a random island without anyway to get enough supplies to sail.
I’ve gotten sunk so many times only to spawn on an island without any supplies, then to sail away and get attacked again and instantly sunk, again.

I love the naval combat but despise hand-to-hand combat because it's just about who can cheese the controls better. It's why I stopped playing the game.
As i've played hourglass i won every single time i did naval combat, on the other hand boarding never works for me, and yes the battles were long as heck
if they just got rid of shooting yourself out of the cannons and the sword lunge it would make boarding so much less frequent and mainly when the ships ram, or trying to get super close. which would be awesome in my opinion

Breaking contact, appearing to flee or be scared and having good naval chops throws off so many really good boarder crews. So many crews that have gotten good in HG don't seem to have the mental endurance for a long fight. If you can bring it around with some good boarding skills of your own then you can really come out ahead against some of these guys.

Super satisfying to see these "COD players" get sunk. I came to this game after playing a game called Blackwake because I realized I loved old-fashioned naval combat, but Sea of Thieves had a lot more players. It sucked to realize that being able to board and shoot the enemy was more effective than using chain shot and cannon balls. Though a boarding did play a big part in your success here, it was the naval skills that really tied down your victory. Good stuff, Phuzzy!

I play the game because I want to enjoy it. sweaty reapers that chase everything in sight down and board to double gun you and spawn camp make it unenjoyable. as a player that supports the game, I'm supposed to NOT voice what makes the game hard to enjoy and just deal with it?
@@blvdes being the chasing guy is realy fun, trust me. So you could try to improve to become the hunter. When i started comiting to the pvp in 2020 i always felt bad when i sunk somebody, but that will eventually disapear. And if you dont enjoy the game, you should play something else, you are not doing yourself a favour

@@Crysalus I participate in pvp all the time. the problem is when i don't reciprocate and I send off a white flare and announce that I'm grinding tall tales and people still pursue and board/camp me when i have zero loot for the thrill of it. the pvp has gotten so sweaty and meta that there's no way to compete unless you're sweaty too. I don't want to sweat. I want to have fun. there are plenty of other games I sweat on but this isn't the place for it

To be honest, I met a lot of people that were animals on tdm and super bad at naval. I beleave most of them are cheaters, there's no way in a lot of hours, they don't even have on their xbox profile, they don't know how to not put themself in situations where's impossible to fight back

It seems to vary greatly from one server to another, I'm still looking into it, but feels like if you do a few that don't work, try and change servers. Something about the server itself, things happening in other areas sometimes prevents this from happening

My good old days were when I wasn’t banned permanently for no reason. Miss them so much! Now I just talk about my false ban everywhere in an attempt to get unbanned. Got banned in April… maybe march actually. Yeah it was march haha march 17th to be specific, I assume later at night or early around lunch when I reported some hackers. Got an email confirmation that they were banned, and it turns out I got banned. Did they ban me on accident? I don’t know. They won’t tell me anything. I get ignored on discord, avoided on the support site, threaded to be banned from their support site lmao. Banned from the Reddit, ignored on twitter, RARE LTD. Never replied to my contact email. My favorite game ever… while I still say it’s a good game I never say people should play it.
sea of thieves is full of some total @hole moderators, i got banned permanently from their steam community hub. only thing i did was report comments from the guy who was clearly trolling/arguing in bad faith, and my ban reason was: "mass fake reports"
and when you look at the avatars/profiles of the people in charge of their discord too, it tells you all you need to know about Rare

@@Crysalus Not everyone has that sort of time. Two years ago, I would have actually been able to do that, these days, getting on SoT is a rarity. I don't have time to learn double-gunning or counters to it, I just want to hope on and have some fun. I don't mind sinking, it's just when every fight is near impossible because my hand-to-hand is adequate at best by my limited time.
@@Crysalus I agree and that is sadly the only way to counter it, still I had the chance to pick up the game early and I didnt so its my fault in reality. I just want for people to stop boarding 24/7 and get no punishment out of it, thats ridiculous. I know how strong it is against a team on same level hth combat as I am, right as we speak I sold a 4 athena and 8 Reapers Chest stack with some trinkets too! Thanks to the power of boarding. I felt sad because they were decent at naval :/

This is why you need to diversify the weapons and give us ACTUAL customizable ships. The more diversity we have in Hand to hand and naval, the more ways we have to attack each other the more fun you can have. Rare, ffs, give us more weapons, give us different cannons. Give the fights meaning again!
It sounds like a good idea but how would those customization work? You mean like upgrading your hull,cannons or being able to add more cannons onto your ship with the cost of speed or smth like that? That would be hard to make it fair. Meta would destroy the game

Honestly I think a small window of invulnerability on your own ship upon respawn is a good spawncamping fix. Let the spawn-in get their bearings and their weapon out before getting shot, at least
This would ruin hourglass and normal pvp fights for the person boarding trying to legitimately sink their opponents, if you hate spawn camping then scuttle your ship, it’s there for a reason
Just try to move around as quick as you can to dodge shots when you respawn. Doesn't work always, but then you have time to react. For example AD-strafing is extremly usefull.

@@Crysalus That's normally what I do, and it does work. However I'm thinking more on an invisible fix. Something you wouldn't notice unless in this specific scenario. A couple seconds of weapon invuln is a relatively quiet fix.
@@skyelight9848 you probably don’t understand how pvp works, but when you put holes into a ship the people on said ship usually try to bucket their boat for some unknown reason, so maybe if someone perhaps 🤔 boarded their vessel and kept killing them so they couldn’t bucket, maybe, just MAYBE, they would sink 😲😲😲
I wish SoT wasn't so toxic. It was genuinely one of my favourite games but every time I would get attacked it would never end with a GG or even silence it was always just slurs and death threats etc. And if they ever won a fight it was always EZ kys noob touch grass all that stuff. The game is in a steady decline because of this type of player and it's honestly a sin. Obviously this isn't new info but man I miss the old days when people had respect for someone else who was just playing the game as they please :(

I remember when I started playing sea of thieves after quiting fps shooters with my friends, because I never liked that type of games and got very tired. I played only to loose game after game, because I never wanted to learn all this werid fast controls, mechanics, muscle memory black magic shit. So SoT was a game of my dreams. Until I first met toxic and vulgar, double gunning ang spawn camping sweatlords. It broke my heart...

The old school way of sinking ship isnt ship to ship combat .. this is the new garbage META introduced with a pletora of new items to mess up ships such as curse canon balls , fire balls , Chain shots , and all the newb ship warrior design introduced with these things ... The old school way to sink ship was to bord them keg them or ram their ship into a island and kill them preventing them to repair .. that is OG SOT .. this new boat META is lame most of the time
They are delaying season 10 until the middle of Oct. WTH. Bunch of excuses as to why. But IMO, I find the tall tales to be INCREDIBLY CHILDISH and BORING. Its my opinion that had they not dedicated valuable time to the most recent completion of tall tales they could have had season 10 out.

To help with the spawn camping issues, other crews shouldn't be allowed to access your supplies until your ship has sunk. This would help ALOT
This would defeat the entire purpose of boarding in actual fights, imagine killing them but then you run out of food and ammo and can’t do anything when they respawn

@@furrycrab4275 it wouldn't defeat the purpose, if you can manage to still drop the anchor and kill the crew it leaves them in bad position but at least they won't be spawned camped into oblivion. It gives the losing team a slight chance

only naval is also not the way just like he said, your skills shouldn't be one-sided. And judging a win or a loss only by the fact if you sink or not, although you got camped for 20 min, is kinda pathetic in my opinion. it doesn't feel like a loss for the camping crew. I don't say spawncamping for no reason is not toxic and you shouldn't do that, but calling hand-to-hand pvp shouldn't matter or something is just stupid in my opinion. If you want to get better at hand-to-hand pvp I recomend something called campwars, where two or more boats agree to camp themselfes for as long as possible in order to improve at camping and breaking camps and hand-to-hand in generall- It really helps and you'll see that killing boarders becomes way easier. But being good hat hand-to- hand and not naval and complaining about people navaling is also cringe just saying.
@Crysalus 1. Listen to what he said. One you have to be good at both and take advantage of what your opponents are worse at. 2. What do you mean you shouldn’t judge who won or lost by who sunk? If you sink, you lose the treasure. That is literally losing. Spawn camping after the fact has no bearing on gaining or losing treasure. 3. Please learn basic writing comprehension before you write out a paragraph, because wow, this was hard to read.
Also, spawn camping folks on their own ship is deterred by the ability to scuttle and change seas.
@@danielacosta248 they took advantage of phuzzy being not good at hand-to-hand and boarded. Spawncamping for no reason is toxic though. (Thats what they did, but you can't say that boarding always works like this, usually you get camped until you sink)

Shit naval and god tier aim always means cheating. Good pvp players know how to naval. This was the case with the brig you showed.
Not really. Skill at pvp is transferable from other games and even the differences are easier to pick up. Naval is pretty much entirely unique to this game and is kind of hard to practice. It’s totally possible to only be good at one.
