Good call. I had Topuria rd 2 TKO. The man is too fast, hits too hard, and Volks chin is too compromised.
Volks chin was not compromised before the fight. Islam didn't put him to sleep. He was still trying to get up when the ref stepped in and that fight wasn't even a full round. No full 25 minutes of wear and tear. Anyone in that division who took a clean Topuria punch to the chin like that would have been slept just like his previous opponents who had plenty of time before fighting him. Volk ate a few shots in round 1 but not clean but his mistake was not making the adjustments in round 2. Topuria adjusted better on how to cut him off near the cage and Volk leans back to dodge punches so that's why he got caught because he was already backed up to the fence post and his lean back wasn't going to position him far enough to dodge a punch like it would if he was in the center of the octagon. If he gets a rematch, the approach would be to be to only move laterally instead of circling the cage, If he does get backed up into a corner or the fence, clinch and break or reverse. Topuria was already busted up and bleeding in round 1 Volk was fine but his defense plan was not good. Topuria does the same thing every fight and I'm surprised Volk and his team didn't come up with something better to do if he got backed up to the fence.

The ability for your brain to heal from trauma is largely genetic and proof can be seen in Glover who in his 40s can still take massive shots and not get slept and was beating guys in their late 20s. Glover always had a chin in his prime and still has a chin in his 40s. Compare Hill KOing the young Johnny Walker who does not have the same durability as an over the hill Glover who took multiple massive shots from Hill and still went to a decision. Same with Kelvin who took crazy shots from Izzy but same shots slept or KOd Costa, Brunson, Whittaker. 43 year old Mark Hunt took clean shots from Derrick Lewis and still won. Same Lewis punches KOd younger fighters. Volk can get dropped relatively easy when a punch connects clean on him we saw it in the Ortega fight and Ortega does not have the heaviest hands in the division. Volk never had the strongest chin but not the weakest his chin was always mid. Volk's speed and strike defense is what's kept him at the top for so long but go back and revisit his other fights where he gets dropped. If you are not out cold from a strike, the brain damage is far less than when you are still conscious. Volk didn't have a war with Islam it was a short fight where he got dropped from a head kick but he was still trying to push Islam off of him when he fell and when the ref steps in he is squatted getting up. He wasn't out so the brain didn't shut down from a rattle against the skull.
