In this video we will visit the ruins of Bohus Fortress in Kungälv, about 20 km north of Gothenburg, Sweden. The construction on this fortress started over 700 years ago, when the area belonged to Norway. The video is filmed in 4K by the use of a Mavic 2 Pro drone.
Location.
Bohus Fortress lies along the old Norwegian-Swedish border in Kungälv, Bohuslän, Sweden, north east from Hisingen where the Göta river splits into two branches about 20 km (12 mi) north of Gothenburg. It commands the surrounding area from a cliff 40 m (130 ft) high, with the river forming a natural moat around it.
Initial construction..
The construction of Bohus Fortress (Norwegian: Båhus festning, Swedish: Bohus fästning) began in 1308 under King Haakon V Magnusson, king of Norway from 1299 to 1319. Haakon V also initiated construction of Norwegian fortresses at Akershus and Vardøhus as part of a broader defensive policy. At the time Bohuslän (Båhuslen) was Norwegian territory and served as the main Norwegian defence against Sweden, along the coast as well as the strong point for the Bohuslän region from 1308 to 1658.
Medieval castle.
According to architect Guthorm Kavli:
By the year 1310, records show it was constructed, as normal for that period, out of granite and brick, perhaps under the guidance of Count Jacob of Halland. By the year 1450, it included a continuous surrounding wall, 3 meters thick at the base, with a height which varied from 8.5 to 13.5 meters, varying with the terrain. It was approximately rectangular, with four rectangular corner towers. At the eastern end there was a brick tower, and in the centre of the west side a gate house and drawbridge. Along the inside of the surrounding wall buildings were located which among other things included the 'Kings hall', the castle commander's residence, the chapel, the guardroom, the barracks and the kitchen. The fortress had secure vaulted positions, partly cut into the mountain, and beyond that strong outer-works. At the time Båhus was Norway's strongest fortress. The approaches were very difficult and the area to be defended was small, only 250 x 150 meters, so it did not require a large defensive force.
Fortress.
The fortress was attacked or besieged 14 times, but was never captured. During the Northern Seven Years' War, in 1563-1570, it was seriously damaged. This occurred in 1566, when 250 Swedish soldiers successfully stormed the northeastern-most tower. The Norwegian commander sent in a volunteer to blow up the ammunition stores underneath the tower, killing the Swedes and repelling the attack. As a reward the family of the volunteer got a piece of land which is still owned by the descendants of this volunteer.
The Norwegians rebuilt the fortress of stone and brick, and reinforced it substantially. The reconstruction immediately after the war was directed by Hans Paaske (Påske) from the Netherlands. On 1 January 1590 James VI of Scotland and his wife Anne of Denmark came to Bohus. They gave Henrik Gyldenstierne, Captain of Bohus, a ring and a gold chain worth 3,000 Danish dalers.

This was quite a formidable fortress to withstand 14 attacks. Upgrade it to a bastion fortress and its even stronger! 👍🏻 Im glad it wasnt totally demolished, and opened to tourism. It possesses such great Norwegian history as you described so eloquently, Bjorn. 😀 Thanks for video❗️

I looked this place up to see where it was in Norway, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. I couldn't help but read the article. I am sad to say that I know nearly nothing about the history of the region. Interesting place, thank you for bringing it to life for me... Have a great weekend...
A lot of today's Sweden belonged to Norway up till the year 1658, when it was signed over to Sweden. This place is part of the county "Bohuslän in Swedish", that was part of Norway since the time of the Vikings. Don't be sad for not knowing a lot about the history, what one should be sad about is that schools over there probably don't teach you a lot about European/Scandinavian history, even though most people there have their roots in Europe. Thank you Renata. It was purely by accident we came across this fortress on the way back from a visit to Norway. It was afternoon as we were driving towards Gothenburg and we saw this fortress from the motorway. We decided to have a look and we were not disappointed. It is a fantastic place, not just the fortress, but the whole area. Unfortunately I only had one changed battery left for the drone, but at least I managed to film a bit. This fortress has a thriving history and amassive foundation. I can't imaginge that only 250 soldiers were able to take this over.
Many battles have taken place there and it is a fantastic place to visit.

Thank you for the tour. Just love the rich history of how these castles were used as the years went on. What is more amazing is they were constructed with just raw labor. Not like you could use a mechanical lift. Thanks again for the great history lesson.
