I'll just transcribe the opening to the LP, because that about sums this description up:
Silent Hill 2 is one of the richest experiences gaming has to offer. It's been around since 2001, and to this day it still represents the very best this medium has to offer. There was nothing like Silent Hill 2 before it came out. It demonstrates a mastery of mood and tone like no other. It's a psychological survival horror game that is rife with symbolism and mature themes.
My intent with this LP is to give it the love and attention it deserves. What I will provide is an exhaustive breakdown of everything I know about this game and an in-depth look at everything that makes this one of the best of the best.

I just discovered this guy and feel the same way. I'm so tired of youtubers who scream and over-react to everything (or at least keep it to a minimum so it feels genuine). I prefer let's players who just act like themselves, it's more fun to watch that way.

I think Sh2 is the least scary of the 3 but definitely worth playing through. It's my all time favorite game and would recommend playing through rather than watching to anyone.
I got all the way to the hospital and the nurses scared me 😭😭😭

Actually the radio is silent to the monsters. I think it was the manual in game case that said "The monsters cannot hear the radio's static, turning it off would be foolish" or something like that

What I absolutely love about Silent Hill 2 is the mysterious cold atmosphere, I love the music and the colors how everything is just so...subtle and ominous. It's not dumb gorey, it's like a sneaking shadow nightmare.
Silent Hill monsters scare me so much, the noises they make and the twitching and scuttling just make me shiver!

I know this video is super old but, I just wanted to say that I love these kinds of videos where the person who's playing knows everything about the game and lets you know what's going on but also lets you figure it out at the same time. It just makes it so much more interesting! I love watching people play who know the game. So much better than watching a blind playthrough because you get so much more knowledge and so much more of the lore this way I can't wait to keep binge watching this all night!
I really enjoy this format for the playthrough. I’m very interested in the story and lore and this is most definitely the most perfect way to consume it if you’re too scared to play the game (which I definitely am). Thank you!

I'll be honest with you bro you put out (so far from what I've seen) pretty damn good quality videos out here, I went straight from you silent hill 1 lets play to this one so for what it's worth good job.
I didn't realise just how much I wanted this Let's Play until you started it, I'm so ready for this.
That music right at the start, in the bathroom though. It's... eldritch and unsettling, but subtly so, which I think is a great start to the game.

I recently slipped a disc in my back and have been pretty much stuck in my bed for the past week. In that time, I've watched most of your lps and coincidentally, I was finishing up your SH1 playthrough when I saw this video appear. I cannot even begin to express my love for this game, and I am soooo excited to hear your incredible insight and watch you play it! Though SH3 is much more stressful to me, 2 was the game that got me completely absorbed in the very idea of psychological horror. Please keep up the -excellent- work you've put into your channel!
Daerunia~ I feel the same about SH3. It's the game I prefer as a horror game, I like the themes of that game more, I like heather more, and I like the art and monsters more, but SH2 did it first and it's a far more important game in terms of breaking new ground, presenting mature themes in a subtle way, and teaching a master class on mood, tone, and pacing.
your commentary along with this game made this become one of my favorite lets plays iv seen.

yours and james' voices are both so relaxing. it's weird that i find silent hill to be the perfect series to fall asleep to. not to say your bad at commentating. because you're really good. i just wanted to go to sleep... that's all
+Christian Chandler There are tracks on the SH2 soundtrack I fall asleep to all the time. Alone in the Town for instance, is both extremely menacing, but also soothing.
Scribe Yeah, as i was falling asleep I was able to listen to some of the music without focusing on playing. It is really great music. Is the soundtrack available for purchase on iTunes or somewhere?
I've watched your playthrough for the first game and decided to follow you for the series, as you know so much about the lore. It's fun watching your playthroughs. I did get a bit annoyed with the first one towards the last two episodes; you were kind of all over the place compared to episodes 1-14. But regardless, you were probably tired and drained, so that was fine. I haven't explored the franchise at all besides the movies, but after watching you play Silent Hill 1 and seeing this episode, I love the new character. Such a fresh perspective, so good! I thought it would be a continuation of 1, but it's a whole new thing it seems. Well, I am in for the ride as I make my way through LET'S PLAY SILENT HILL 2 :)
If I ever woke up in Silent Hill, I'd just stay at the bar.

This was the first game my dad bought with his PS2 and i still have fond memories of being a 10 year old laughing at a grown man shitting himself from fear. I later played this and found out that my experience with this game's atmosphere would forever change the way i appreciate a game. Glad you're doing justice to this beautiful gem, Dave! Just watch out, i hear there was a HOLE somewhere.....try not to jump into an early grave ;)

So the message on the radio isn't all garbled static. You probably won't realize it the first time you hear it, but with hindsight it's pretty clear ...."id you k...." is Mary asking James Why did you kill me.

michael liggett It's possible, but that's a stretch.
The walk to get to silent hill is long (several minutes) the camera angle im not fond of, but the atmosphere is incredible, the fog and the faint eerie "industrial" like sounds in the background, add a sense of foreboding and dread and gives you the sense that you're not in a good place by any means.
It also sounds like something is following you, to me anyway im not sure if you're "actually" being followed or not.

There was a Hole here, it's gone now. I love small memes that come out of these types of games like SH1's "It was foretold by Gyromancy" and the classic "Itchy Scratchy" from RE1.

In terms of comedic value, though, Silent Hill 2 does have an equivalent to "It was foretold by Gyromancy." It's in a cutscene later on where James exlaims very bluntly, "This town is full of monsters! How can you just sit there and eat pizza?" The way he says "This town is full of monsters" is the funniest thing to me.

I remember when I first played this game when it came out. Never played silent hill. Opening sequence I couldn't tell where cutscene ended because it was beautiful. Also opening narration hit me hard.

Silent hill 2 is my all time favorite #1 game, purely because its terrifying no matter how many times i play it and the dark story and symbolism is just genius, but i will admit that Silent Hill 3 is by far a scarier game

"There Was a Hole here, It's Gone now" I'd go over a bigger theory later, But maybe It's Just the developers fucking around to see how much we'd go into detail to try to figure out what the fuck it means, and laughing while we do so. It could also be that the papers are litterally just covering up a hole.

There was a hole there, but now gone now could be referring to a scene that happens if you revisit the bar. James later mentions when you examine some beer bottles that he has somewhat of a drinking problem. So when James drinks, his void is filled. So it's like there was a hole there... But it's gone now. And the message is in a bar...at least I think so?

Not a problem at all. I wasn't a fan of that stuff back when I recorded this, and I've only become more entrenched in that opinion. Plus, it robs the genuine reactions of their impact and sincerity

26:00 in resident evil you never have to select a key in your inventory. if you have the key on you and approach the door its to be used for the game will say that you've used it and then ask if you want to discard if there are no more uses for it.

First, glad to see you doing this for CZcams, wasn't sure if you were going to, because of doing the livestream a while back.
Second, on the voice acting...I'm a little back and forth on it. On one hand, I think it was intentional to make everyone sound a little off, on the other, I'm not sure if they're off in quite the right or truly intended way. I think part of it is the dialogue itself--it doesn't sound like natural English, since it was likely translated to be faithful to the original Japanese dialogue, not fitted to sound more authentic--but that's true of most movies or games or animation that comes from there.
But really, it kind of feels less like people who are genuinely off, but inexperienced actors who THINK that's what being off sounds like, if that makes any sense.
Jay Kay It's a mix of both. The dialogue itself is a bit stilted because of the localization and the voice actors weren't all very experienced at the time (it was still 2001 mind you). But they were also given specific directions to speak in a certain way that isn't necessarily 100% natural sounding.
I get that--I'm just not sure if it 100% works, or if actually does feel like people who are losing grip on reality of it's just bad acting. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Have you listened to the HD voice actors they included? What did you think of them, just in terms of their voices?

Anyway, I've never actually played any part of this series, but like Dead Space, I still want to learn about it (and I did play a little bit of DS1). I saw an LP of the first Silent Hill a while back, but couldn't find one for this that was tolerable. I may eventually watch your play through of the first game, and I suppose I'll watch the third one after you get finished with this one.

Nice walkthrough and explaining the depth of the game, i played this from 2005 to 2013 , my ps2 lasted for 12 years cause i got it in 2001. I beat this games about 50 times. That bathroom was nasty though. Was the town abandoned? Poor guy, he was all alone and probably scared out of his mind.
Just picked up The HD brother thank you for helping me like walk through this game gave me a hard time and this game wams vary vary intense i only played about 2 seconds of it i still have ti beat down pour never played silent hill 3 i still got a long way to go
If anyone watched the horror movie stay alive those monsters look pretty much identical to what was used in that movie.

+StarlightMcPuff I think Masahiro Ito actually addressed that once. His take on it is that Mary is in the backseat of the car, and that James is so deluded that he can't see it or refuses to believe it's her corpse.
