This was the fourth song ive heard of Rainbow and this was a completely different sound to what id heard in other songs. Dio delivers the song fantastically and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar work was perfect! i really enjoyed this song! Watch the video to get my thoughts in full!

Catch the Rainbow 1977 Munich live concert is a must, just a magical performance from Dio and Blackmore.

In my opinion, Ronnie's best work ever was his Rainbow work.

This is my all-time favorite Rainbow song! I was originally exposed to the live version, so I tend to prefer it...there are times when the studio version seems a bit more cluttered sonically than the live version. Also, the live version features much more instrumental exploration and greater range of dynamics, both musically and vocally.
I would also recommend a third version of the song for your consideration...it comes from the Dio tribute album and features a slightly different arrangement with Glenn Hughes on vocals.
BTW, "Heaven and Hell" DOES feature Dio on vocals, but it's a song by Black Sabbath. Dio joined Sabbath after Rainbow.
    God bless!!

"Catch the rainbow is lyrically medieval in that it's concerning a stable boy who makes it with a lady of the court. She sneaks off to sleep on his bed of straw every night and they think it's all going to work but as we rudely find out, it never does and they kind of go their own way, but it's a track that I think Ritchie and I are very proud of." Ronnie James Dio

My second favorite Rainbow song. This is my "Chill" song, when I want to relax I just pop this song on and I am at peace. The song "Rainbow Eyes" is similar to this song and even softer. Not something you would expect for the Godfather of metal.

Something similar from Rainbow would be Temple of the King, but try and listen to the live versions of Catch the Rainbow from the live album On Stage or Mistreated from the same album. Great review.

Classic song! The live versions are all on a different level and around 15 mins long - the Munich version often gets the vote because there is a video of it, but for me the best version is the originally live one off "On Stage". The "re-entry" on the song always sends a bone-rattling shiver down the spine! As you like the album version you may well like "Temple of the King" off the same album - and "Rainbow Eyes" is the ultimate ballad.

One of the best hard-rock ballads since I know myself. I feel a bit of the psychedelic rock of this period in the song. For sure lots of bubbles, flowers and colors in the air.

my first reaction after 20 seconds was "ho que c'est bon" which translates to "oh how good is that". It sounds so classic, i bet it was covered by other famous singers.

My brother was a vocalist. When he died, a guitarist and friend of him - Tore Andrë Helgemo, performed this song in the funeral. Just the perfect farewell song, on the last journey to the stars. That guitarist, is now the lead singer in his own band - called "Stargazer". 🤩🤘

Dio could sing from the most beautiful kind of singing to the most brutal classic metal vocals and he did it all at the very highest level, for me there is no one that does it better. He never even had any vocal training. I really think you should do the Live in Munich version from 1977 for many reasons, one being that Dio really was an awsome live artist and also that Rainbow was a fantastic band and the live versions were not exacly like the studio versions, its a bit of different dimension to the music. I can certainly recommend any live video from the 70´s and 80´s with Dio singing, he was then at the very top of his abilities but also already a very seasoned singer having started as early as in the 1950´s. The Munich live is pretty epic over all, i can recommend any song on there.

Three of the musicians on this recording never performed the song live. They were the members of Ronnies band ELF and were only used for the recording of this first Rainbow album. All were fired prior to Rainbow becoming a live entity.

Dio is my absolute favorite singer/songwriter, performer of all time plus by all accounts such a gentleman who absolutely adored his fans he began his career in 1957 singing in teeny bop pop songs such an awesome career every band he was ever in improved dramatically then his solo career starting in the 80s

Often, Ronnie's lyrics had hidden meaning. You might think it's saying one thing and then realise that he's saying something else completely.
Gates of Babylon is a great song to listen to and so is Temple of the king.

Apart from having much more improv, the live version tones down the Hendrix/Little Wing stylisation.

I love this version, true the live performances are much more intense perhaps, but they do somewhat miss the bluesy feel of the original. With bands like UFO, Journey and Rainbow i usally prefer the live version, but in this particular case I do love the studio version very, very much.
