  • A rare video of the late Pan Nam performing Wing Chun’s Siu Nim Tao set in 1990. According to Pan Nam student, Eddie Chong, punches in the Pan Nam system can be directed towards any line from the shoulder. In other words, the shoulders are considered the centerline.
Born in 1911 and passed away in 1995, Pan Nam (AKA Hak Min Nam) studied Wing Chun under Lai Hip Chi. Lai Hip Chi studied under Chan Wah Shun and one of Chan's most senior students, Lui Yiu Chai.
The subtle movements in Pan Nam’s forms seem to be more rounded, flowing and internally focused than those of Yip Man’s. The forms are performed at a relatively slow pace, more like Tai Chi.

I like Pan Nam style..they use a different stance..like a horse stance but not very low and don't have a strict focus on centerline theory.

It would be great to have someone point out the meaning and application of the differences, to keep alive what is different but useful. Especially since the Yip man lineage is the more popular nowadays.

Good footage, I appreciate the share. Hail Pan Nam and Lai Hip Chi forms. I'd say Sifu Michael Wongs' instructional videos have taught me well.

Pan Nam is one of my granduncles. My dad grew up in the nearby Shunde village (now district) and learned Hung gar and Wing Chun from him. My dad then taught me a good portion of what he learned when I was 9-12. It was enough to defend myself throughout my school years. I took on three high school punks when I was around 12 and all three left with a bloodied noses.

Thanks I love this - going behind with fook really works esp with side on clearance and internal lines of energy

No problem. It’s interesting to compare the similarities and differences between Pan Nam and Yip Man Siu Nim Tao forms.

Some of the differences are still in Jiu Wan wing chun (Jiu Wan and Pan Nam were friends and training partners and both trained with Jiu Wans Cousin Jiu Jow) like the vertical fist and other hands using the nipple line instead of the center of the chest. There is a reason for it.

You can see the differences in the way pan nam did things compared to yip man wing chun. And the thing I mentioned about lining up the punch on the nipple line and not the center of the chest. On the nipple line when you shift with the punch you have more power. Other little things

They are essentially the same, but i would say go with the ip man form instead

Since Pan Nam also trained in hung gar which gives him a stronger stance in my opinion. I learned Pan Nam Wing Chun from my dad and I can see some hung gar influence.
