She is obviously in a warmer area, as her pipe from her roof would have problems in areas with hard freezes. I find a corner pantry is much better at using corner space than any other arrangement, though she could a have fit a small or tankless water heater in beneath the corner to preserve the views instead of trying to make a stove, cabinets and counters fit, with the stove beside it. Then to access it just move out the stove, should the need arise.
Would add cob around the cookstove to moderate house temperatures.

"Not so tiny" is a good concept. Two of us live in 600 square feet, with an unfinished basement of the same size, that has a low ceiling, but it is dry and good for storage. We are on a small urban lot, but we garden, and preserve.
When we purchased this little house it had been claimed by colonies of chipmunks, and mice, and the basement flooded frequently and was full of mold and mildew. 12 years of renovating later we live in this little space, and it is crowded because we are still renovating, so we have tools for building, for gardening, for food preservation, and for food preparation. I imagine we will be renovating, and tweaking this space until we are carried out in boxes at the end of our lives, but the journey sure is fun.
Unfortunately there is no community of like minded people in the urban area where we live, we are considered to be be extremely eccentric by those living around us. So here I am watching videos of people who live a similar lifestyle, good to know there are others out there!

If I was 30 years younger ( I'm completing my 79th year on Earth 🌍! as of December 2022 ) I'd be following her classes & creating my own !
So agree about bathtubs. A friend has her big jetted tub in her bedroom ! I'd make that space a livable reading relaxing space too. Her toilet is within a little room on the other side of that big room with a door , sink is in there too ! And a small shower. Which is really nice for rinsing off sweaty or garden dirty body before luxuriating in the 🛁 bathtub.
The green house of course is awesome too.
    And her KITCHEN WOW !
Maybe in my next lifetime !!

I'm too old now to start such a project, but I still dream of starting out with a pre-built tiny house on wheels, on a plot of land, and then adding outbuildings to support all that's needed to have a life off-grid. And, ideally, add other people in their own tiny houses on wheels. Sigh.

@@robingoldman5944 Thanks for that inspiring message! I read it in the midst of a meltdown while downsizing a lifetime of possessions to fit into a tiny rental house I'm moving into -- all while facing the uncertainty around what the future holds in this global meltdown. Living smaller is good, certainly. But I'm torn about giving up all the tools, supplies and misc. resources I've gathered with the hope of living on a largely off-grid homestead -- which will then make me MORE reliant on an increasingly unreliable systems for grid power, goods and services (we had two large-area power outages here in Portland, just this week). It is especially concerning in these increasingly uncertain times. I happen to be 67 now, also, and don't have the resiliency I did even 3 years ago (pre-worldwide crises). I hope I'll be able to carry on and achieve a more secure, smaller lifestyle, as you did. It's nice to hear others being optimistic and still having 'big dreams'! And best of luck in your property acquisition! 🌟🤞

This was great. I used to watch HGTV and the renovations of large spaces, I think more for watching how something is done right rather than large. I realized the tiny house movement was for me as it relates to my family home and I migrated downstairs to the first floor over the years and did not need the second floor. Now I am looking to sell the family home since I have basically lived with my daughter for the past 7 years. She lives in a habitat for humanities home and as I look at the size of the garage which is 400 square feet, I attempt to picture if the studio I intend to build would be big enough, even if extended to 500 square feet. Natalie is correct, a not so tiny home is best. I imagine the work stations needed. A sleeping area that can be completely dark for the best sleep. A bathing situation as I am getting older and prefer to bathe in safety.

A very encouraging video, if I would live closer ,Iwould take part in one or two courses of yours. You are ever so inspiring to me. Thank you so much. I look a lot of clips about tiny houses, and living in such a space would be satisfying to me. What I actually don´t like about them is, that they are so narrow. For instance if you sit on the sofa and strech your legs you "nearly" reach the opposite wall, if I´m with family or friends and have a chat, I don´t like to sit beside them, such a setting is okay with reading or watching TV or working but not for talking, just my feeling and wish. Now that I watched your video and you said "not so small" , knowing this sounds simple and logical ,it really gave me a "push" . Yes! Why not? So easy and thank you again. Your house is lovely, and again , again thanks for sharing.

My motto in life has always been "girls can do anything!!" and this shows how true that is. Nobody starts out knowing everything about everything but we can always be shown and taught. Well done ladies who are attending this school. Often its age which brings the inclination to do things too (like gardening, art etc), but not necessarily so. Get off your butts and give it a give it a go. Ask your mates, ask Google, read a book from the library plenty of ways to learn. The only people who will know if you made a mistake is you.. so tell yourself it was a happy accident and it was meant to be...then move on. In my world 'cant' isn't there, but 'shouldn't sometimes is...if you don't have a go you will never know what you can do.. Good luck from Western Australia and thank you for showing us around your cabin...

How beautiful her cabin is. I’m listening and seeing the cabin and I cannot imagine that she built it by herself( I mean alone. Please note that I’m not under estimating her but on the contrary I do understand her because in many countries in Africa. I wish to be younger and healthier and live near her so that I could take a couple of classes on how to build. Thank you for sharing this.😊oh, ( there are an online classes!)

Love this vid interview or documentary or explanation. Love the reasonable and open mindedness of this woman speaking. I've been looking at tiny houses...mainly for financial freedom reasons. But many tiny house builders are far from reasonable in their pricing. Many range between 250 to 300 per sq ft and then there's the lot they will lease you for permanent rent. It's eternal slavery. Im seeking to be free as possible and comfortable as possible. I need to be able to stand up in whatever room or area of my house I'm in. I can't crawl on my hands and knees to get to my bed or wherever.

Continue with the board and batten siding on the second floor to make the home look like it was built intentionally instead of piece meal.

I’d love to take your online classes. I used to know construction work but suffered a traumatic head injury n now I barely remember what I learned. I definitely need to go tiny bc I just can’t afford to survive. Living with my adult son is not fair to him. And it would be awesome to learn how to create exactly what I am looking for n needing. I’d love to find a mountainside community where I can live an independent life but find good neighbors to help b get help from. Becoming involved. But maintain my own privacy as well in a beautiful setting. But it needs to be affordable. So if you ever heard of any such place I’d love to hear about that too. I have many gifts to contribute and be helpful and feel a sense of belonging and finally fitting in somewhere but once I find that, I really want to get started before I physically can’t do the majority of the work on my own house. Do you think you can help? I’d love to learn how to build no matter what. N you should be proud of everything you’ve created. We’re actually kindred spirits. So I’d love to talk sometime. Take care.

This home doesn't appear to have been built to code, or with permits, given the cost to build. Does North Carolina allow building without a permit, or are there certain conditions to do so?

    • @timsolomon8352
      @timsolomon8352 Před rokem +4

Depends on county, and foundation, a house on "skids" needs NO permits , but again it's the county within NC. To be honest, it needs to stay that way, large government is to much, and those "codes" are only a way for them to get paid

If you have a big or huge family living under one roof even owning a big house could have less of a footprint than those living in small houses because less materials per person and people sharing bathrooms, appliances and kitchens. I would say small houses are generally not good for your family of 12

    • @TinyHouseExpedition

We are in Western North Carolina. Mold is definitely an issue here. We have good external venting kitchen and bathroom fans, our closets are open without doors and our bed has slats for a foundation instead of a solid foundation. Also, we have exterior surfaces that are cedar shou sugii ban to preserve against mold, insect and fire.

I like the idea of a debt free lifestyle. But, our national economy is built on the premise that the citizenry should be locked in debt to expand the economy. If we all lived debt free our economy would collapse. Our system of banking requires that people pay interest on debt that creates a return for the few that invest and not save as was our economy of 150 years ago. It is a total bummer but explains why we fantasize about things like no debt tiny home lifestyles. Cheers
