Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell wanted Goff. Period. If you have a team that is willing to give you two 1st at and a 3rd plus the quarterback you wanted all along, you take it. You don't say. "No thanks, all we really need is the quarterback, because we value him that much."
Also, if you actually think about it, no team has ever traded a quarterback like Jared Goff in the history of football. A 26 year old 1st overall pick with no injuries that had 2 Pro Bowls and 2 100 passer rating seasons, who took their team to the Super Bowl, and had 4 consecutive winning seasons after the team hadn't had a winning season for 13 years.

Sam is such a cynic when it comes to Detroit's front office and what has been spoken out loud in their media sessions. I know it's hard to believe given the nature of the NFL but BH and DC have yet to lie to the fanbase about their intentions. There is no coach speak. The fans appreciate it.
Additionally, seems like their 2021 and 2022 draft classes are being dismissed....this is most certainly the THIRD year in a row Brad Holmes has nailed the draft.
    2021
    Penei Sewell - All-Pro RT
Levi Onwuzurike - miss due to injuries
Alim McNeill - High end DT
Ifeatu Melifonwu - Great blitzing DB
    Amon-Ra St. Brown - All-Pro WR
Derrick Barnes - Game winning INT vs TB
    2022
    Aidan Hutchinson - Pro-Bowl EDGE
Jameson Williams - Explosive WR who can make any Jet Sweep a house call (NO, SF this year)
    Josh Pascal - DL depth
Kerby Joseph - S depth, had a good rookie year INT wise
    James Mitchell - TE depth
Malcolm Rodriguez - LB depth, plus special teamer with budding FB skills
James Houston - Crazy sack production on limited snaps rookie year, injured most of 2023
To be able to get roughly 4 guys each year who can become instant starters, with approx 2-3 guys each class being Pro-Bowl caliber and very few guys that aren't "rotational" level is well above and beyond what most fanbases could hope for.

What was Detroit’s draft slot for those drafts? Top 5 and top ten I think. It’s a lot easier to pick better players when you have a premium draft spot. Even more so when you have multiple early round picks. That said, BH did a great job going after his guys the way he did. The Gibbs pick was fantastic imo and I really thought Williams was the best wr that year. He hasn’t had the success yet but he’ll have ample opportunity in the future. He’s a home run hitter

Teams are in base personnel like a third of the time these days. The whole 3-4 4-3 thing is generally overblown. Though I do like the move for Kenny Clark and the youth of Brooks and Wooden to have better gap matchups given they’re a bit undersized. Van Ness and Gary are certainly plenty big enough, as well. Now GB has to address safety. Go grab a solid veteran FA and draft someone like Nubin. No more Charmin soft Pettine/Barry approach ... they have CBs that excel at press so time to let them press while a LB/SS finally contests all the underneath stuff gb used to just give up to opp QBs. Regarding the Bears. Their new DC is Eric Washington, so I would keep AJ Epenesa in mind at end. Bears had a top 5ish defense after acquiring Sweat and they are not losing much depth or talent if they tag Johnson. I don’t think they have that much to do on defense. A replacement for Jackson and an edge for sure, plus an upgrade over Jones at tackle. They are set at LB and CB by tagging JJ. Beyond that it’s depth.

Respect that they get the wins when they need them. But let's not pretend you have to solve a combination of the Greatest Show on Turf and the '85 Bears defense when all you really need to do in many cases is score one more touchdown and possibly convert a 2-point attempt.

Dude the Bengals DO NOT NEED EDGE HELP THIS YEAR!! They have 5 DE’s right now. Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, Myles Murphy, Joseph Ossai, & Cam Sample. They have a dam good group of edge players. They combined for 30 sacks this past year. Myles Murphy is going to be a star. He was a 1st round pick last year. If you watch the last 3 Bengals games you will see what I mean. Hendrickson is a top 5 players at his position and has been for the last 4 years. Sam Hubbard is the best run stopping DE in football and he always chips in about 40 pressures and 6-8 sacks. Joseph Ossai missed his entire rookie year In 2021 and in 2022 he played about 300 snaps and had 20 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR, and 1 TD. Not bad for his first year as a pro part time. This past year he didn’t play as much for unknown reasons a couple of nagging injuries I’m not sure what the deal was but this is a contract year and the kid is going to go off this year. He is one of the most freaky athletes I’ve ever seen or heard about. He was really raw when he got to the NFL and I’m sure he is being coached up and will be great this year. And Cam Sample is a solid DE who can stop the run and rush the passer and he can and does play on the interior a lot. That’s where most of his sacks come from is from the 3tech or 3-4 DE formation. But he is a 4-3 DE who can play inside because he has the size at 6’3’’ 275. I’m with you guys the Bengals need to sign Michael Onwenu to play right tackle and in round one if Brock Bowers has already went off the board and Jerzon Newton is gone off the board and JC Latham or Taliese Fuaqa is there they should take one of them and then just slide Onwenu over to left guard which he would be an upgrade.
But in round 2 if they do t get Newton or Byron Murphy in round 1 they MUST get a DT in round 2 like Murphy if he is still there or Kris Jenkins from Michigan or Devondre Sweat. Even if they do resign Reader which I think they should or somehow trade Denver and get DJ Jones their nose tackle who may be a cap casualty, they need to get a nose tackle in this draft. Whether it’s Devindre Sweat or that guy from Texas A&M. Those are the 2 highest rated nose tackles. Or if not them then Maason Smith from LSU who can play anywhere on the d line e. He played nose tackle and 3 tech and 5 tech at LSU. So sign Onwenu, either resign Reader or DJ Jones from Denver, and sign Hunter Henry or Noah Fant at TE. Depending on how much Fant will cost of course. I say Henry because he can be gotten on a 2 year deal for not a whole lot of money. And then Draft a TE and resign Drew Sample and Tanner Hudson.

I think Steve has nailed Kwesi's plan. Also consider that Kwesi is going into FA with likely $40m to spend, as opposed to $15m in the red like the last 2 years. Kwesi also has about $50m in 2024 cap space "hidden" in potentially deferred void years and Jefferson's 5th year option which is already accounted for. I'm expecting Kwesi to both keep his key players (Kirk, JJ, Hunter, Davenport) and be a significant actor in FA.

@04 Davenport and hunter aren't comparable whatsoever, hunter has consistently put up top 10 edge performance every year he's been healthy besides his rookie year. He was a legit dpoy talent. Yeah his injuries were awful, hence the one year deal we gave him when he refused to play on the budget contract he was on. Hunter was absolutely a key player, but we were right not to sign him to a long-term extension until he proved he could play healthy again. And given that he was healthy, again he was one of the best defensive players in the league, and has hence earned a hige contract. Davenport on the other hand, has never had a fully healthy season, and his numbers are more comparable to dj wonnum. He's not only proven he can meet availability demands, but while he's a good player, hes never shown he can be anywhere near a no.1 edge on a team. He's a rotational guy at best, and on the current vikings D i could name at least 8 players who have put up better play and have better health. Davenport was a risky signing in the first place, and after 13 mil for 1 year, there's no reason we should take another shot

This notion that there is a formula, or one formula for NFL success really starts to grate. So many teams have succeeded with different approaches, and luck is a major factor - health, finding an elite player unexpectedly, etc. Steve's broader notion that all you can do is try to upgrade your team with every move is the only idea that seems viable to me.
I disagree with Sam's suggestion that the outcomes of a succession planning strategy where you don't count on a guy to really contribute in year one, are certainly inferior to a strategy that assumes a player will contribute year one. Two possibilities exist for each strategy - any drafted player can be ahead of or behind the envisaged schedule which has the same potential range of impacts to either team.
The counter argument is that if your team follows a succession planning strategy and is not reliant on rookies playing year one, it suggests that the overall roster is stronger and deeper and there are more options.
To add a little more nuance, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that rookies at specific positions struggle in year 1 - the trenches where most players need a year of strengthening and conditioning to compete - CB and LB where players have to learn more complex systems, and QB.
So a mixed strategy of drafting for current and future needs, and using FA for starters and depth is kind of inevitable, and basically gets you back to Steve tenet - just try and upgrade your team everywhere, on and off the field. The team that upgrades the most for the least cost ($ or Picks) wins.

Maybe Holmes fleeced the Rams by getting Goff AND the picks. Maybe Holmes and Campbell had a plan for Goff as the trade was being made. Sam in particular really struggles with owning his errors. He's often got to rationalize away his mistakes instead of owning the opportunity for growth.

Cam Sutton, Mosley, and the rest will be so much better If they are not covering fo an eternity. Trade up their first and second to get a good CB/S like Cooper DeJean. It's going to be interesting this march because the word is out about where this team is going and now quality free agents are going to want on that bus. A guy like Hunter could be the missing piece and he knows this might be his chances at a Superbowl are fading fast after this year.
