  • A week full of excitement! The biggest thing by far is finding the missing hearth and mantle surround encaustic Victorian tile pieces. I never thought i would ever see them in anything other than a photo. So excited to have them back!! We also demoed out the maids room and hall and looked at some historic wall paper samples donated to me by Andy at the Campbell House.

    This czcams.com/users/postUgkxATHBlMJwipGgVWseuAFKvDQ_5R4_lywo unit was an easy install and turned out amazing. The dimensions were exact! I took a chance and built the wall prior to receiving the unit which arrived sooner than expected and it fit right in the space I constructed. The heat output is perfect for the space we needed and made the room exactly how we envisioned it to turn out. I am happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Thank you for the awesome product just in time for the holidays.

    The maids rooms had a sink in them ; usually. We live in a 1885 Victorian, and during our Reno of the maids room, found the ghost image of where the sink was as well as found the holes where the plumbing ran from the bedroom to the basement. Peeling back the pages of these old structures is so neat. Just FYI it took us 12 years to do our Reno. We did work in between having kids and saving money to do what needed to be done. Word to the wise, don’t go into massive debt doing your Reno. You will be glad when it’s completed and you have no debt in the house. Good luck, enjoy watching your progress.

    Green pigment in the Victorian times was made with arsenic. So much so that people with lots of green in their wallpaper suffered symptoms of arsenic poisoning. Isn’t that crazy?!?

    • @r.g.dolanart203
      @r.g.dolanart203 Před 3 lety +31

      I just saw a historical fashion/clothing person on CZcams talk about this, but it wasn't just greens, it was in some reds and yellows, and alot of fabrics and paper were treated with arsenic to help the dyes set and stay vibrant (so it could be hiding in literally any material from that time) Scheele's green is most famous, but arsenic was used in everything. So probably the safest way to do historical wallpaper is to buy modern reproductions or maybe look into a way to seal old wallpaper if he wants to keep any of the original. There is a way to test for arsenic levels too, I bet he could find out how to do it. It would be unfortunate to do so much to preserve some of the original paper and find out it gives off arsenic dust 😫😭

      Personally, I would put that one in a dining room, with a wooden table and chairs, maybe wainscoting, and a china cabinet. It's a busy pattern, so you're less likely to have clashing patterns in the dining room.
      Something a little more subdued and neutral in the drawing-room, like the ivory and gold, so that you can add patterns and color to your couch, curtains, throw pillows, and rug. Not to mention the green fireplace tiles, you don't want to overwhelm those.

    Just a little friendly advice - where there is old linoleum there usually is asbestos (before 1975) in the glue and calls for professional removal to be safe!

    • @TheMichigami
      @TheMichigami Před 2 lety +5

      not just in the glue, that stuff they pulled off the walls was Congowall (also called Congoleum), one of the early editions of it too, it's got a type of fabric backing with hardened printing on it to look like tiles, the fabric is a felt-like stuff that contains asbestos because it was intended for use in kitchens as a cheaper alternative to tile in the late 40's and through the 50s. We had one of the later versions that was green with red trim and looked more like realistic tile than the black and yellow version in our kitchen growing up, gramma would yell at people not to touch the edges because of the asbestos, and make people wash their hands if they touched it before eating. A horrifying amount of things had asbestos in them in the days before they knew it was a bad idea, from ceramic tiles and congowall to oven mitts and baby clothes.

    For the front parlor, which would have been the "fancy" parlor used for company, I'd definitely go with the luxurious larger sample with the red flowers. Second choice would be the smaller red sample. The front parlor was supposed to impress, even "wow" visitors. The almost white sample is very lovely, but I'd use it in a bedroom or other more "quiet" room. Love what you're doing!

    I just have to say. Watching you work, sped up. Wish my 1916 farmhouse redo went that quick! Lol! We have been working on ours, in real time for 28 years. Good luck on all the work you have ahead of you. I was 33 when we bought ours. Now I'm 61 and still plugging away on it with my hubby. We are finally working on the mudroom. Which will be mainly used for my canning storage. Added a big shelved closet. And a walk in pantry. Also has built in cabinets like our kitchen. Will be so great to have it all done. Have the new windows in. Have bought 2- 24" old doors for the new closet cabinet. Also found a vintage door to the outside. Refinished them and got them painted new white. Using the old door knobs and back plates. Spray painted them hammered copper. And wainscoting beadboard around the room painted barn red. Going to use a country fabric up above on the walls. You use liquid fabric starch to adhere it to the walls. Works really good. Need to get in there and finish painting the cabinets. Look forward to seeing your progress.
