Berube is an awesome coach and he is sorely missed here in St. Louis. The GM did him a dirty, but we fans love him and will always applaud the Chief!!! But I miss him so much.
Leaf fan here, all of us are really excited. Hopefully he doesn't end up getting the same treatment as other coaches by the fanbase lol

GETTING A QUALITY COACH in Toronto is step 1 in a long series of steps in order to fix the problems that have plagued the LEAFS in what seems forever . Next step is for a revamp of upper management and then we can get to what players should be kept and what players should be punted as far away from the team as possible !!!!!!

Berube isn’t going to coddle these guys like Keefe was. It’s definitely a needed upgrade, but those players, the core 4 and Rielly especially, are very soft
The issue is the core 4 taking half the cap and having a d man like Reilly as your #1 d man. If that doesn’t change, then the results won’t change.

Just hire a leafs fan to coach the team. It’ll be a lot cheaper for the same results of a big $$$$ coach.
Personally we needed Berube here, he's known for being a no nonsense, no guff coach and I expect great things for him, this is a good first step but only a first step right now.
There's obviously a lot of moves the Leafs need to make this summer. But have to make them one at a time.
So, I'm happy they went ahead and got their coach. It was time for change and it's time for more change beyond the coach. I think Berube will bring the right kind of energy and attitude that this team needs. And I think Treliving will be onboard with making moves to build the kind of team that will fit with Berube.
There needs to be serious management changes other than this. I like Berube BUT St Louis has a great AHL to NHL system.
Toronto has shown time and again that they can't develop talent. Trading Carter Verhaegue for a bucket of pucks is as bad as trading Tuuka Rask for same.
Toronto's AHL to NHL pipeline has produced Reilly, Lily, Woll in the last 10 years.
For comparison, Tampa's 3 time cup run had 13 players who were developed through their system. And that doesn't include players that left after winning a cup or two like Yanni Gourde or , yes, Carter Verhaegue.
That would’ve been funny if Biss was the new Leafs coach.

Berube is exactly the guy the Leafs need. Even though I was kind of 'shipping' if you will the idea of Brind'Amour coming to the Big Smoke - the former blight of Toronto during his playing career - I knew that one was a very outside possibility. But Berube is a great alternative and I'll be looking forward to see what personal touches he brings to the team next season. Let's go!
I think it's great you said that Sutter would be really funny. I was thinking the same thing. Even if Sutter came in for one year to give them a major kick in the ass, it would have been amazing. :)

Blues fan: Chief is an excellent coach.
That said, The Leafs do not have the players he needs to make it work for Berube. In my opinion, he’s being set up to fail. Berube needs control of that team, and ownership in STL more than gave him that control. That will not be the case in Toronto.
Hope the best for Berube. I don’t expect anything to change in Toronto unless ownership changes or players are dealt & gone.

Really seems like there’s gonna be some uncomfortable players with a 180 degree turn in coaching style. Can’t wait to watch the drama.
If nothing else, sometimes you need a hard nosed coach to either whip the guys in shape, or have them willing to waive NTC and NMC's.
imo berube could've done more in his final few months as was seen by bannister's turn around of the team leading up to playoffs.

Marner ten million? Tavares twelve million? I can see Matthews getting ten million. But the other two… those are Stanley cup contender salaries. You can replace Marner and Tavares with hard working sophomores for 4 million each or trade Tavares for a real goalie and trade Marner for a Benn or Stone type who can help rally the team in the playoffs. Or grab two D-men to strengthen the defence. For that matter, the Leafs have a new starting goalie every season! Why? They have the budget to get a top-5 goalie; but I guess they want that cash to go to Marner for a nice tally of assists on Matthews’ goals and zero production in the playoffs. I’m a Habs fan so I don’t really care… but maybe my suggestions can help in TO if the execs want some great advice. What they have is not working. A new coach won’t do anything. There’s 40 MILLION coaches in Canada. We can all coach. You can’t replace heart on the team leaders and a new coach won’t help a typical goalie play like Hasek or Roy. It won’t happen. This coaching change won’t make any difference.

Let’s see what kind of job ‘Tre’ can do knowing that he needs much IMPROVED ‘D’ and MOST CERTAINLY top flight goaltending AND a Return to contracts that DON’T PAY FOR WHAT MIGHT BE COMING. However I had similar thoughts when the Shanahan era began. Up to now his philosophy with regards to team building are DRASTICALLY FLAWED…
..this man will not be dominated by Shanahan who bullied Dubas and Keefe...Marner and other "gods" will be held responsible or moved
