  • The Enlightenment was an eighteenth century European intellectual movement that had a profound impact on prominent thinkers in late Colonial America, including many of those who were leaders of the American Revolution. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine were three American Founding Fathers who looked up to John Locke and Isaac Newton and sought to put their theories into practice. Jefferson was heavily indebted to John Locke for the ideas of Natural Rights expressed in the Declaration of Independence.
This video should be helpful for US History students of all ages and especially great for AP US History.

You don't have to view Jefferson from a 21st century lens to be puzzled by his idea that "all men are created equal," yet he owned slaves. There was a growing abolitionist movement already in place by the time Jefferson wrote those words in the Declaration of Independence. Also, he wanted to pin the slave trade and slavery itself on King George in an early draft of the Declaration but met with stern resistance from the representatives from the Deep South. Also, read his Notes on the State of Virginia to see what he really thought about the people he enslaved. He didn't think they were human in the same way non-Africans were human, so his idea of "all men" couldn't possibly extend to them.

All men are created equal... Thomas Jefferson had written anti-slavery paragraph to the Declaration of Independence, and he was angry that it was removed from the document because of the slave states wouldn't have gone along.

Thomas Paine died the most hated man in the Western World due to his book: The Age of Reason. He attacked the clergy and it backfired on him extremely.
"The Age of Reason" Booklet dealt with the Enlightenment the narrator here is speaking about.
I've read all of Thomas Paine's booklets.
Paine's "Common Sense" Booklet fueled the American Revolution and by far was his best writing, in my opinion.

When Jefferson wrote the draft of the Declaration of Independence he called out the CHRISTIAN king over slavery. The words were capitalized for emphasis..... CHRISTIAN & MEN . He was definitely making a connection with both of the words “ MEN” being in all caps.
Unfortunately some southerners had that part removed. We do still have the original however & a couple original copies.

Did just saw someone from Texas calling PragerU propaganda. Oh yeah you are a professor. Just to note that the person speaking in the videos of pragerU are either university profressors , high profile people like this one speaking about the christianity of the founding fathers. Just take a look at what he is saying instead of critising about the channel and calling it propaganda. It is often people who tell you that, taht makr you close minded.

No one’s ever going to be able to build a credible case for me being left of center. Seriously, man. PragerU’s video about the origins of the Civil War is pure propaganda and misleading on a number of levels. You can search for my response to that video here on CZcams (and then see if you still want to try to stereotype me as some kind of leftist professor).

    • @karl5722
      @karl5722 Před 5 lety

@@tomrichey What does that have to do with the civil war? This is a different issue. Seriously a professor is just showing his close-mindedness. You can disagree about the civil war but that doesn't excuse ALL pragerU videos are bad. I myself think some are not good and are bad. But that doesn't let to believe that some of theur content is credible. The guy precisely handed details of where the fathers wrote that phrase or passage. Fine don't watch, it is terrible to see a professor affirming what he wants and denying what he wants.
Sir I am not saying you are leftist but I sure say you believe ALL the content is propaganda.
Edit: Just to precisely say that the guy isn't saying the founder were traditional christian, believing in the trinity and the divinity of Jesus. Some do but some don't.
Deism by definition is: a supreme being, specifically a cretor who does not intervene in the universe.
He just reply to this belief (plus atheism) and say they believe in a god who does intervene in the universe specificily as of moral rules to men.

But did the enlightment really reach the United States? Rational thinking instead of emotional thinking: how does it seem that US politics is quite emotional compared to most European countries?
All men are equal in the US, but in many countries in Europe, ie. education is free. Noone depend on their parents economy if the son/daughter of a single mum wants to become a professor.
The whole world uses the metric system, which is easy to use, whereas in the US you need a calculator for even small calculations.
