      I started giving my girls their baths when they were quite young-2 months-in my bathroom. I gave them kisses, talked and sang to them, then told them to "shake, shake, shake" inside the closed shower curtain and let them jump out and shake a little more before I finished drying them off brushing them and opening the door to let them run around in my apt. I them took them for a walkie when they were dry- if the weather permitted-to the Petco nearby and they could pick out a treat and a toy to bring home for being a good girl.

      Not to mention, SUPER SMART! What other dog can herd cows and/or sheep, keep track of all of them, notice if one us missing and go to look for it, and know what to do-once trained-w/o it's owner's attention?
      My Tess (4 yrs.) detected that I has Diabetes before my dr. did. She also taught my Gypsy Rose Lee to let me know when my glucose was too high or low before she died at 16.2 yrs. Tess's grandson became a service dog to a young girl with CP and predicted her seizures as well on his own (Must be that keen nose of theirs).

      Maybe try desensitizing as much as possible. Such as, when he is relaxed you can try and quickly touch his tail, or his paws so he gets used to it and slowly becomes more comfortable and calm. It can be a long process but if you do it fairly frequently then it can help a lot

    • @skipstitchj213
      @skipstitchj213 Před 3 lety

      Train them from puppies! Brush them, and (gently) handle their ears, paws, tail, etc so they are more accustomed to it. Border collies can be especially finicky about having their feet handled. And even a puppy needs grooming, whether by a professional or at home.

    I have a border collie myself and I've been hearing you shouldn't shave them, but than is it fine to make the hair somewhat shorter on the butt like you did? Because that would be really convenient since she always gets that wet and it matts super easily

    • @a.m.1401
      @a.m.1401 Před 4 lety +17

      You should never shave a double coated breed because that increases the chance of them getting a heat stroke by 200%. Trimming/shaping is fine but never shaving too much.

    • @CassiePutz
      @CassiePutz  Před 4 lety +12

      You are correct, shaving a double coated dog, is a big no no.
      #1 their coat may not grow back correctly for at least 3-6 months depending on their age. Best advice, is get them pro groomed. If money isn't there, I provided brushes in the description, and do that on a weekly basis if you aren't getting them professionally done. You create a bond with your dog.

    Any idea how painful it is when someone forceably yanks (with a steel groomer) the undercoat out of a long-haired dog. They id blood adrenalin tests pre & operational and post grooming. When a dog is in fear/pain the adrenalin levels shoot up. During grooming and yanking the adrenalin levels were sky-high. The reason the groomer painfully yanking the coat out is because it is faster to complete the work. It is quite possible, during grooming to use the same human de-tangle and conditioning products as you do for humans. But by pressing down on coat and then gently grooming out undercoat the pain (fear) factor is much lessened. I wouldn't let any groomer who used such 'inconsiderate' methods anywhere near my dog.

    Personally I think a Border Collies' fur should never be trimmed. They have a very special type of double coat that keeps them warm in winter and cool them off in hot temperatures and are designed for being outdoors. I have a BC and would nt touch her fur, only a bath if she rolled in some dirt, otherwise just leave it. Don't fix what's already perfect.

    thank you for the advice but I personally think your border is a bit overweight, but i could be wrong.

      She doesn’t look overweight at all. I breed BC’s, and she looks quite healthy to me. The coat after a bath gets quite floofy/airy and can make them look bigger, but even then, she doesn’t look to be an unhealthy weight to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      @@truthexposewithbri155 I agree. She looks about right to me too. Mine is a 6yo male and as long as he's around 18kg I think that's perfect.

    I train and show Border Collies in Conformation and Agility. Please do not ever clipper the topcoat! The double-coat provides the main source of temperature regulation. It protects from cold and hot weather. I get why you trimmed the britches & tail (client request due to an annoying puppy), but never the topcoat! The only things that get trimmed on a BC are the ears, feet & shaping of the britches.
    In addition, do not EVER rotate a dog’s rear leg/hip assembly in the manner you do - YOU need to move and bend a little! You’re going to injure someone’s dog someday, if it hasn’t happened already. How about I move your upper leg to a 90 degree angle to your hip? Just because you CAN doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Dislocation waiting to happen.

    Do you have to train a dog from puppy hood to be this cooperative during grooming? I don't have a dog yet but was if this is a training process or do they just get used to getting groomed if you take them enough

      It definitely helps to get them used to being handled for grooming as a puppy! Some things I did with my dog as a puppy was getting her comfortable with me touching her paws at an early age

      Some dogs hate, dislike, tolerate or love the grooming process from the get go, but the experiences they take from it will slightly change how they feel about it! (like any human being!) Its easier to get them used as a puppy, like Rebecca said above, but one can always try for older dogs.
      Mostly, get them used to the brush (brush at home), bathe them at home, touching their paws (not only the front ones) and petting them... all of this will get a dog used to grooming, most of the time. Its mostly getting them used to human contact!
