  • This short segment features Mel Black being taped doing a radio show with Lucille Ball and Kay Kaiser. Brilliantly funny. This film was shot for the U.S military and is therefore public domain.

    The man who plays the "father" is Jerry Colonna, Bob Hope's favorite and most bizarre side-kick.

    Mel Blanc's stuttering routine, where he tries but fails to say a complete thought about something, and then says a complete thought about the VERY opposite, is EXACTLY the trademark of the character Shorty the barber of Amos and Andy. I don't know who came first.

    Private Sad Sack also appeared in a Seaman Hook cartoon called "Tokyo Woes". Mr. Hook was a character created for the U.S. Navy that was used to help promote war bond allotments. The character was designed by Hank Ketchum, who would go on to create that popular comic strip mischief maker, Dennis Mitchell , aka Dennis the Menace. The cartoon, "Tokyo Woes", parodied Japanese radio host "Tokyo Rose", a moniker given to any and all English-speaking female Japanese radio program hosts. The programs on the Japanese radio stations, aimed at the Allies, were propaganda meant to demoralize the Allies. Probably the most infamous of the "Tokyo Roses" was Iva Toguri D'Aquino, who was a Japenese-American woman who went to Japan to tend to a sick aunt right before the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the attack and war was declared, she was unable to leave Japan, and her parents back home in California had been rounded up and sent to an internment camp in Arizona. After the war she was detained, put on trial, and convicted of one count out of eight for treason. She was pardoned by President Gerald Ford in 1977.
    In the cartoon, Sad Sack is a POW and talks about how well he's being treated, including being fed "nothing but p-p-p-peaches and c-c-c-pie a la mode" and drinking nothing but "ruh-ruh-ruh-rum and Coca-Cah-cah-Cola" before being shunted away.

    MEL BLANC was the ABSOLUTE BEST!!! He will MOST DEFINITELY be sadly missed!!!
    I grew up watching the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour, they were the best cartoons ever made!! The kids today don't know what they're missing!! There will never be any cartoons made that can top them either!! They probably won't even play them nowadays with all the politically correct NONSENSE going on!!!
    Its cool that they have a few of them on CZcams though!!!!!!!

    I took a second look at the piece and I feel I may have jumped the gun on that comment about this being shot with multi cameras. I feel now that it was shot with a single camera. The body match between the medium two shot to a closer two shot on Mel and Kay isn't all that great. Which indicates it was done with one camera. With separate takes.

    • @centr0de
      @centr0de Před 7 lety +6

      +Robert Williams -- I think you were correct earlier about multiple cameras; I counted 3: from the control room, a close-up for most of the recording (seen with the bassist over Kay's right shoulder), and a "floater" which drifted from medium to tight shots. This radio show, Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge, was huge back in the 30's and 40's, and it was live, but obviously recorded. Most people only had radios, TV didn't become even close to affordable until the late 40's.

    How times change; in the 1940's it's funny, in the 2010's it's politically incorrect. Interesting.

    Even during the worst conflict in the history of man, Americans could still laugh. Now, all a third want to do is whine and bitch about everything that doesn't go their way. Get a life!!
