As a long time Vegas Pro user, a recent upgrade I purchased came with Magix Audio Cleaning Lab bundled with it. This has been by far the most effective software I've found for removing noise from audio recordings, whether the recording is of a vocalist, podcast, choirs, or instrumental recordings in a less than desirable acoustic environment of a church. Previously I would use Audacity, but that wasn't as effective in my opinion. I had also tried several VST plugins in Vegas, with were either ineffective, or took away all the high end. In Magix ACL, with a little time to learn the parameters of the Noise Removal tool, I was able to remove any background hiss as long as there were a few seconds of "silence" in the file to use as the blueprint. Heck, you can even go in and remove instantaneous noises like a cough, or a page turn if you want to get into the spectral view of the recording. The only drawback is I think once you export the "cleaned" file you're limited to 16 bit. (And yes, I recognize the optimal solution is to eliminate noise and set gain properly before recording, but sometimes you just can't get around it!!)
I had a revelation a while back while recording an acoustic guitar that my computer was the source of my noise - which I've previously attributed to my gear. After the computer, the next "noise floor" was a freezer in the neighboring room! In general, I find that quiet spaces are a rarity.
Oddly enough I'm experiencing a lot of self-noise from my power strip. It's even worse when I charge my laptop. It's unfortunate since I like the power strip tower with USB ports but will have to get a better brand.
hey julian, i have a deity s mic 2 and a tascam 100 dr miii and notice if i raise the gain to -3, i hear the self- noise is this normal for every mic/audio recorder?

Really depends on what you want to record. If you record the drop of a needle it probably going to be noisy. If you record dialogue with the mic close to the speaker, it should be fine.

It might be basic knowledge to you but many people can't tell the difference between ambient and self-noise. Is there anything specific you want to know?

I had no idea of the meaning and importance of some specs of preamps in audio interfaces, for example, before I watched some of your reviews (which have helped me finally find a unit I am satisfied with). Your most recent Audition workflow video has some good insight within it, even though I neither use nor plan to use that specific program - so I guess I welcome any post-beginnery insight you decide to share in your videos (and appreciate them, in general, a lot).

Try to get the H1n as close to your sound source as possible and turn off the limiter if you don't need it.
