  • This video describes designing and building two ultralight folding kayaks. Skins are made with Dyneema Composite Fabric (Cuben Fiber) and frames use carbon fiber tube and large diameter aluminum tent poles. Inflatable sponsons provide buoyancy and skin tension.

    You have so many cool projects on your channel. I'm suprised at the small-ish number of subscribers you have

      Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm not really looking for a big audience. I'm just having fun doing the projects, trying them out and making some videos!

    Excellent! Do you have any plan to sell this boat commercially? I would love to this boat or know your knowhow to build this one.

      My projects are hobbies, and I have no plans to make them into a business. However, my web site www.cubenmaker.com provides enough info to build most of my projects, including skin pattern offsets. Email me at tim_evans@shaw.ca with any questions.

    Just wow!
    Awesome work.
    Is Cuben Fiber only glued together or you need to stitch ?

    • @cubenmaker1164
      @cubenmaker1164  Před 5 lety +2

      Cuben Fiber can be sewed but I make my seams entirely with double sided tape (transfer tape), not glue. For more details see my web site www.cubenmaker.com

      Cubenmaker is it strong enough? I guess yes as your kayak is holding nicely.
      Somewhere I saw a tutorial where dyneema was glued with a special glue that melts the thin layer of both faces into one

    Looks very cool! What's the cost of all the material required to build these kayaks?

    • @cubenmaker1164
      @cubenmaker1164  Před 5 lety

      The cost of materials for a kayak with a Dyneema fabric skin and carbon tube keel is roughly $800. A cheaper, but heavier and less stiff version with a TPU nylon skin and aluminum keel would be roughly $400.

    Are you willing to make the plans available for these? Great looking kayaks.

      Check out my web site www.cubenmaker.com as it contains more information. For the 13 foot "floating frame" kayak, I would say all the info necessary to build the boat is on the site at this point. For the 14 foot full frame kayak, the skin patterns are there, which are the most important element. I would be happy to answer any questions or provide more info if you are serious about building something.

    how did you make the sponsons? what material did you use ?

    • @cubenmaker1164
      @cubenmaker1164  Před 2 lety

      Great question. I didn't actually make any of my own sponsons. For my first boat I used Folbot replacement sponsons like Tom Yost used. After that I was lucky to have Feathercraft nearby while they were still in business, and they made them for me. I think they used 5 or 6 oz. TPU coated nylon. Since I've now made my own pontoons for my catyaks, I know making sponsons would be pretty simple. I would use 5 oz TPU coated nylon. Sourcing the valves, tube and especially the elbow flanges might be a bit tricky though.
