    I should have anticipated the (weirdly aggressive) conversation about modding or hacking the 3DS, but I didn’t, and although I actually don’t have anything against modding or homebrewing your 3DS, it’s outside my area of expertise and outside the scope of this video, which is mostly framed around game recommendations. There are resources here on CZcams for modifying your 3DS, including a helpful video from MVG, but this video is not that. Thanks for watching though!

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video! It's definitely going to be a reference moving forward. I plan on playing and streaming a lot of 3DS this year so in many ways this is particularly useful to me.
    As I watched you go through them I'm just reminded of how charming and earnest the 3DS eShop is. Strong XBLA vibes. I know those types of small passion project games are still around on Steam, Itch and Switch but there is so much out there now and I honestly have less stamina to search, so this feels like a book closing in many ways.

    really good video. the part at the beginning about futureproofing 3DS games through transferring to PC and expansing storage was particularly useful. also to add for those in PAL regions, we never got certain games physical here either (such as Shin Megami Tensei IV, Jake Hunter Detective Story etc.) so it's defo worth getting PAL digital exclusives picked up too.

    Fantastic and informative video Craig! This is surely a useful resource for knowing what is and isn't getting lost in the closure of the 3DS eShop. The 3DS eShop is an important piece of gaming history for me as it was the first time I actually bought full digital releases of new games. In most cases this was due to necessity as there was no physical option for North America, (I'm looking at you Ace Attorney Dual Destinies/Spirit of Justice and Rhythm Heaven Megamix) but also with the standalone digital titles like Harmoknight, the Mighty Switch Force series and Shantae and the Pirate's curse. (Someone has to stand up for WayForward!) Card Pocket Jockey and Dillon's Rolling Western always intrigued me, so I better jump on them now before next year, the 3DS still has some fun waiting for me so thanks for the recommendations!

    Seeking tips for those of us crazy of us to own multiple 3DS systems. Will transfers be permitted post 2023 date? Best practices for right now. Etc. thanks!

    • @tvandlust
      @tvandlust  Před 2 lety

      I own multiple myself and hadn’t considered this. I know that transfers require an online connection, presumably to transfer licenses. My best guess (and it’s only a guess) is that that sort of transfer should still work after March 2023. I’m basing this guess on the fact that Nintendo is still allowing you to redownload games after then, and seems ok with continuing to confirm license ownership, just not processing payment. It would seem to me that transferring between systems, because it is only a process of confirming licenses and not PURCHASING licenses, would still work. But again, that’s only my best guess given the circumstances and I don’t see any specific documentation from Nintendo about that particular feature.

    wow, what a thoughtful video! I've already made a few purchases in anticipation of this, but that's a good call to do another back-up.
    dunno if it would've helped at the time, but I lost everything that was on my 2DS at the time after it got ruined in the rain. coming home from campus library, had an umbrella, and the 2DS was in a decent (or what I thought was decent) case down in my backpack and still got SOAKED. I remember panicking as I dried it and turned it on, only to watch it flicker off for the last time!
    I called Nintendo about how I could get them back on a new system and this surfer dude sounding guy told me "I'm sorry, sir, but there's no way." I guess that wasn't 100% true? I had to straight up re-buy everything I wanted. oh well, it was fine at the time, I guess...but there was a lot of Club Nintendo games I couldn't even get back.
    anyway! this was super thoughtful and informative, thank you for putting the effort into this! I'll DEFINITELY be referring back to this a few times as I make my final eShop moves.
    that Rusty game though...still makes me feel weird lol

    • @tvandlust
      @tvandlust  Před 2 lety +3

      It’s definitely not 100% true. Nintendo CAN move your licenses, they just do it at their discretion. It’s never consistent, and sometimes they just outright deny it. It’s very annoying and bad.

      @idxman01 Před 2 lety +1

      The 3DS and Wii U are shared wallets, yes. You won’t be able to add funds to either wallet via the methods and associated dates in the video, but you will be able to continue to purchase games on the 3DS and Wii U until March 2023 from the funds in those wallets. Any remaining wallet funds after March 2023 will be available on your Switch eShop wallet, as long as those accounts are all linked. You can keep adding funds to your Switch wallet and make purchases from its eShop after March 2023, that’s not going away, but any funds added to the Switch wallet will not be accessible by the 3DS or Wii U wallets after March 2023 at all. @tvandlust  Před 2 lety +1

      I’m not 100% sure, but it seems like that might be the case. My suggestion to you, and what I am personally doing, is treating the dates Nintendo put out as the ultimate end point for those payment options and simply being pleasantly surprised if you can continue using a linked Switch wallet as an alternative payment method until March 2023.

    Virtual console for the 3DS and WiiU may be "obsolete" and it being shut down for those two systems is inevitable, however, I still prefer it over the Switch online paywall.

    • @tvandlust
      @tvandlust  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah that’s fair. I usually prefer buying what I want outright too, but I think subscription services can also be a good, affordable alternative to paying $8 for a single SNES game. There are games I want to play, but not necessarily enough to pay for them in their entirety, so things like NSO and Game Pass are helpful there. I wish I wouldn’t completely replace buying VC games outright, though.

    • @tvandlust
      @tvandlust  Před 2 lety +1

      My understanding is that you should be able to format up to 128GB in FAT32, but also understand, this is very likely overkill and probably even unnecessary unless you are modding and running CFW. Every game I showed here in this video, plus any update data I’ve downloaded for the hundreds of retail games I own, are all on a 32GB card and I am in no danger of running out of space. Most 3DS games are very very small. You are more likely to hit the Home Screen display limit than you are to hit the storage limit of a 64 GB card.

      I've reached the 300 game/etc limit on my original 3DS - all store brought - and have 297,280 blocks left on my 128GB card, about 30% of the card (out of those titles, 44 are retail - including some chunky RPGs - the largest single game I have is Yo-Kai Watch 3 at 27,086).

    You know, Sony tried this once. Then the loyalists made their voices heard and saved not only the PSVita’s store, but the PS3 too.

    • @tvandlust
      @tvandlust  Před 2 lety

      Nintendo is probably more obstinate than Sony, so I’m skeptical pushback will amount to anything. As for Sony, they really only bought themselves some good PR for a period of time. There’s no way those stores are in widespread use anymore, and I would bet they are champing at the bit to shut them down. They already shut down the PSP storefront and PlayStation Mobile -it’s not new for them either.

      At the risk of seeming defensive, I feel like corporate CZcams accounts and "full time" CZcamsrs have complete skewed what is a reasonable time investment from hobbyist CZcamsrs. Gathering b-roll, especially for this volume of games, is extraordinarily time consuming. Hours and hours worth of work! And given I have a full time job, hobbies that aren't CZcams and a family, the choice was either this pragmatic approach or no video at all. I chose the pragmatic approach.
      You are, of course, free to not watch it and I think that's ok, but I did warn you immediately at the start of this video that there was no footage, making a comment like this unnecessary and, honestly, kind of rude and dismissive of the work I DID put in.
