    For everyone who didn't get what's this song is about:
    It's for her boyfriend who died of cancer.
    some explanations :
    -beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth==> when the boyfriend received the diagnosis and knew he was dying.
    -the hair thing was linked to samson's story(he was the strongest man alive but loss all his power when his lover cut his hair)
    -wonder bread==> his medicine
    -history books forgot about us==> Describing how strong their love was and no matter how much they prayed it didn't change anything.

    "He ate a slice of wonder bread and went right back to bed" Is referring to the medication for he takes for the cancer.
    WonderBread back in the day was widely advertised as being super healthy(hence the name), even though it wasn't, it actually provides less nutrition(as with all white breads) because most of the fiber and other good nutrients have been taken out(not to mention the flour is bleached). So, when the song says he ate a slice of WonderBread, it means that they are being sold lies (in the form of pills or otherwise), as is a common prescription in today's times with many terminally ill people.
    The more you know.

    The lyrics are a reference to the story of Samson and Delilah in Delilah's POV but the underlying meaning is a story of a guy who has cancer and the lines "the bible didn't mention us" means no matter how hard they prayed, he still wasn't healed. "he ate a slice of wonder bread" meant the meds.

  • @dakotaweaver9811

    Why don't people understand this song is up for interpretation? Sure I believe It's about a girl who was in love with a boy and he was diagnosed with cancer, and even though the memory of him makes her feel down he's still the best thing that happened to her, And no matter how strong their love was no one will remember it in the end but her. But I highly doubt this song is really about the old testament. All her songs like this have a deeper meaning than what the surface lets on.

    This song is all about love, and told through the story of Samson and Delilah. Samson had tremendous strength, but he lost it when Delilah had his head shaved. In the song, Spektor makes uses this comparison to show how she feels, how even after she did something so horrible to her loved one, he kissed her til the morning light and told her that she'd done alright. It shows the unconditional forgiveness you have for someone you love.

    I always thought this song was describing a relationship with a cancer victim. 'Your hair was long when we first met' shows that he was healthy when they got together; the line about wonder bread refers to how chemotherapy often leaves people feeling sick, and plain bread's a common remedy for nausea.

    • @DaBagelSquad
      @DaBagelSquad Před 9 lety

      I kinda thought she was making a parallel to cancer and the original story of Samson and Delilah. In the original story, Delilah is a prostitute who gains his trust, then stabs him in the back. My take on the song is that she cancer victim's lover stabs him in the back by making him go through chemo, even though he is suffering from it and probably wants to die.
      There's not much evidence for this, but I like it when stories are parallel to one another. It makes things more interesting. :)

I just realized, she was inlove with my years ago..and when i made a gesture.. she just runaway and ghosted me
    It was sad.. coz i dont know what I’ve done wrong to her.. i just imagine her singing this song to me,back when we were young.
    But i know in my heart,wherever she is now whatever runs to her head,she never failed to tell me that she loves me..im just too dumb that i treated her just a friend and years passed that i was too focused with my career that i never saw her,she was there waiting for me all along and now she’s gone and doesn’t give a fck about me.

    Whats wrong with you people? its not about the cancer patients or the betrayal of delilah towards samson its literally about the pain of delilah when she betrayed samson. its about the tears she shed while cutting the hair of his man. its about the untold story of why did delilah needed the money or the deepest reason why she choose to sacrifice her one true love. what we all knew was about the sufferings of samson but what about delilah she sure has her own reasons. only the light are being highlightened but her feelings and grief are not mentioned. she also has a heart and this song is perfect for girls because we are not perfect and maybe men will never understand our sacrifices but to all the girls we just want to be found, we want our parts to be read upon, we want our voice to be heard cause we all have our own sufferings. we are also human and so as delilah. she was never seen, she was a good woman after all why did samson fell inlove to her before all the betrayal happened. so every story has its own sides. this song is magnifico!!!

      No, it's about an old folk tail about a Jewish guy who got power from his long hair. Then he fell in love with a girl that betrayed him by cutting his hair. Then why'll people were about to kill him by chaining him to columns so he used the power of God to tear down the columns. It's not about cancer.

    I feel like this song, Go Long by Joanna Newsom and Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens are all sister songs. they're all such heart-wrenching songs. one of the marks of a true artist is creating at least one song so timeless and impassioned that it can evoke a powerful emotional response in the listener no matter how many times it is listened to.
