I live in San Diego and have been for 20 years. Wife and I are retiring in Europe in September. Cost of living is outrageous here. SDGE is planning on hiking rates, as are insurance companies and other utilities.

San Diego weather is by far among the best in the world. CA in general. The problem here is the cost, taxes and lack of infrastructure maintenance. Living in La Jolla for 30 years I can definitely see the decline. To be fair the entire nation is going through this.

Having lived in North County near the 5 in San Diego for more then 20 years I would love to retire here, but you hit the nail on the head with affordability. Its easy too live here while you have a full-time job, but on a retirement income there are just too many other places in the country where you can enjoy similar experiences for significantly less money allowing you to thrive verses survive retirement. The other concern San Diego just does not have any +55 communities that can take you through your 3-phases of retirement (Gog-go years, Slow-go years, and No-go years). San Diego is a wonderful city and fantastic place to raise a family and will always be my home, but even with a plentiful nest egg its not worth it as a retirement home.

A lot of San Diegans would disagree with you about it being easy to live here with a full-time job.

If you like beach, mountains and weather San Diego is the best place to live! Life is too
Short to live in states with extreme bad weather! You just have to live basic and enjoy outdoors. That’s my humble opinion. I’ve been here 45 years and I’ve enjoyed every year! No vacation needed. San Diego is a vacation destination for a lot of people!
