  • It's surrounded by an aura of legendary technical difficulty, thanks in part to the film "Shine," the Concerto No. 3 in D minor for Piano and Orchestra by Sergei Rachmaninoff, known as the "Rach3." In the film, the protagonist Geoffrey Rush, playing the pianist David Helfgott, descends into madness due to the spasmodic tension caused by performing this piece. In the concert, it is performed by Evgeny Kissin, described as "one of the most admired pianists of our time for the intensity and sensitivity of his interpretations," as noted by the New York Times.
    On the podium is the Milanese conductor Gianandrea Noseda, a regular guest at the Santa Cecilia concerts since 1999 and currently the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington and the General Music Director of the Opernhaus in Zurich, awarded in 2022 by German critics with the "Oper! Award" as the "Best Orchestra Conductor."

      @pauswing Před 3 měsíci

      @@SlayPlenty I understand what you're saying. The slower the tempo, the more difficult it is to play and the more opportunities for expression, but it doesn't flow as it should. The music has a margin in tempo but I consider that here it loses the essence of Rachmaninoff.

      Agree with you on most of the first movement (especially the main octave theme, but excluding the cadenza), but I really do think that in the other movements (especially the second) he leaves just enough space to really hear all of the inner melodies and appreciate the whole texture where most of the other recordings just slosh through them (such as 32:32 or 39:39)

    Chi commenta in merito al tempo, inteso come misura fisica, dovrebbe evitare di commentare, in quanto di musica capisce il nulla assoluto.
    Per dirla, alla Celibidache, "Il tempo preso come oggetto, alla maniera degli idioti che scrivono sul loro spartito “la croma a 72”, non esiste. Il tempo è la condizione affinché la molteplicità dei fenomeni che si presentano alla mia coscienza possa essere ridotta dalla forza, in sé unica, che essa [coscienza] possiede: quella di ridurre la molteplicità, e di farne un intero molto complesso, un’unità di cui appropriarsi, per poi lasciarla, trascenderla, al fine di trovarsi liberi dinanzi alla successiva unità.
    Più la molteplicità è grande, più ll tempo materializzato, visto nella dimensione fisica del tempo, è lento.
    Ma in verità iL tempo non è lento.
    Non è né lento né veloce.
    Oggi, il tempo è divenuto un oggetto che si può caratterizzare mediante una misura fisica. La convenzione di misurare fisicamente il tempo è idiota.
    Il tempo fisico non esiste in musica"

    The opening theme is not supposed to be a funeral piece. Rachmaninoff's tempo is much faster and gives a whole different meaning to the opening. It is annoying that pianists these days all destroy the theme in this way. Because it is a simple theme in a single note octave they think it has to be played like a dreamy nocturne, which is wrong. Listen to Rachmaninoff's own recording.

    • @Michachel
      @Michachel Před 2 měsíci +10

      I agree that it feels too slow, however I think sometimes it is nice to experiment with what we already have in order to express what the pianist wants to convey instead of the original creator. There are many recordings at the intended tempo so I do not believe we have lost it in a new age, but we instead are exploring new ideas.

      Agreed, feels too slow to me as well. I do like how her tried to increase the clarity of the inner lines which typical get drowned out, but overall, not sure it worked. Movement two was handled much better imo.

    First time i hear rach 3 played this slow.
    Feels like an old washed up pianist or someone not rehearsing it enough or just a student doing slow practice.
