He got arrested for fleeing & eluding...Fast forward a couple years ago, he got a Mustang and said the same thing about the Chargers, he's back in jail for fleeing and eluding. Nicely done comparison. Here in my New England state, the state police have been almost 100% Ford Crown Vic for many years and with that recommendation, most municipalities have used Fords as well. I do notice a few completely unmarked Chargers in use now by the state police. Interestingly, I have also noticed that many municipalities are now using the Ford police Explorer rather than the Taurus-based sedan even though it costs quite a bit more.

    • @Anon1mous
      @Anon1mous Před 7 lety +1

      Hi William, I don't think the Explorers (or as Ford refers to them- PUV's) cost that much more if any than the Tauruses or Crown Vic's for that matter. I heard from a reputable fleet source that the PUV's cost the same as the Crown Vic's did at about $25k per vehicle from the dealer. The biggest complaint with the Tauruses has been their lack of visibility- alot of blind spots from what I hear with its pillars. Most agencies also seem to go with what the big ones (CHP, LAPD, MSP) go with and those places are generally sticking with the PUV's for now although CHP just signed a big contract for Chargers starting this year on.

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  Před 7 lety +2

      It's basically a "manual" automatic transmission. If you press the button to activate it you have to shift between 1st and 5th gears by pressing the up or down button to shift. It's supposed to be a "best of both worlds" compromise between a full manual transmission and an automatic. For me personally, even though I spent my first 15 years driving a stick shift I don't use the auto stick. I probably would use it if it had a gear shift like a manual transmission though. Hope that helps!

      I went to a junkyard and got one for like 30 bucks. The only problem is that the wiring harness in the police interceptor doesn't have the connectors to hook up the cigarette lighters or the lights in the cup holder. Also there is no AC duct to run underneath the console for the two rear AC vents, there is some kind of computer module where the vent would be running below the bezel where the front cigarette lighter is. The biggest issue is where the shifter on the regular Chargers is situated, in the center console, the police interceptor has it on the column, so there's a huge hole where the shifter would be. I don't know if there is a aftermarket cover you can put on it or something.

      Engine braking is also used in moving vans with auto trans for hill descents. It goes on automatically to prevent speed build up on long downhill runs. Because any moron can rent a moving van so they have them set for auto just to be safe. And they work good because I drove one all the way down the north side Grapevine and never had to touch the brake pedal with a fully loaded truck. It stayed at 55 to 60 while coasting with no throttle. The only engine braking signs I see are in residential areas so it's most likely noise pollution. And its only for semis.

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  Před 7 lety +2

      I was lucky that mine worked fine when I got it. Police cars are normally wired so that pressing the horn while the overhead lights are on activates the siren. That requires cutting the horn wire somewhere between the horn switch and the horn itself. The most likely places for the cut wire are under the dash. Some downfitters reconnect the wire, but some just rip out the police equipment and leave the cut wire disconnected. It is always a possibility that you have a bad horn (you could hook up a multimeter at your horn then honk it and see if it gets power. But most likely problem is cut wire. I'll try to do a video about this soon.

      I just extended the wires - seems like the police one (at least mine) is wired to have the cig lighter closer to the dash and the 300 console has it much farther back. If you know how to solder that's the strongest way to do it. If you don't get some wire crimping tools and crimp in a longer wire. I have lots of videos on my channel showing various levels of detail on how to solder and how to crimp.
