I spent 13 years in a kitchen and after 13 years I realized I hated working in a kitchen. Also after 13 years cooking I made as much as I did in high school back in the 90's. I am a truck driver ( 3 years) now and I have never been happier. I work 60 to 70 hours a week and go "home" once a month but I am happy at work.

2 days ago I spent the afternoon in an old dirty crawlspace pulling data cables for a customer who needed a new computer network. I do whatever needs to be done and I don't turn my nose up at hard work. I spend most of my time at a desk configuring network equipment but somebody has to physically install that equipment; I give my customers a big savings by configuring and installing. There are a ton of available jobs in telecommunications installation. It's a dirty job pulling data cables but somebody's got to do it.

I was in a Firestone a few weeks ago and noticed a sign that said something to the effect that cars might be built by machines, but it takes human hands to fix them. I think most trade/skill jobs are jobs that can't be outsourced or mechanized but yet are so looked down on.

"Happiness is a terrific symptom, it's a terrible goal." One of the many insightful quotes from Mike Rowe. Seems like a great guy, wonderful interview. I fully agree with his philosophy of becoming great at whatever job you do, rather than trying to find a job you think will be great. It has worked well for me. I am in an industry I never thought I would work in but I love my job. I was laid off, later re-hired by the same company and worked my way back up from the shipping department. Since then I have moved to 3 different companies. I constantly try to learn as much as I can. I work for my current employer by choice instead of necessity and that is a great freedom. A lot of late nights and work that went un-noticed but it was worth it in the end and I still have more to grow. All from skills I have learned on the job with a high school education. I was lucky enough to have taken auto-shop, wood-shop, plastics and electronics classes in high school.

Mike Rowe is the best, I was born with disabilites, not hghly visible ones. I have attended 30 years of community college learning trades, I studied programming, electronics, computer sciences, drafting. I have worked in over 100 jobs across the United States. I did field work, dishwasher, pizza cook, aviation industry, custom boat industry, nuclear power, sporting goods stores, clothing store, shipping and recieving, electronnic assembly. to name some. Up until 20 years ago, I always worked two to three jobs. I started to work on my bachelors degree but the price of one class jumped from 950 USD for 3 credits, to 1000 USD per credit. Beyond my pay grade. I am retiring for the with my most current job on the 19th September this year.

I think Mike's point about arranged marriage is similar to what was said on the Daily Wire father's day special... every marriage is an arranged marriage, technically it's between you and the person you marry at the time you enter into it. We all change as time goes on, so although you might start out one way, the most important part of a successful marriage is working as a team, meaning that you need to keep common goals.

Ben, do you know what sets you apart from nearly every other interviewer in the media these days? It is very simple: you listen to your guest. You do not come across as having a "list of questions" that guide your every response and reaction to the guest. Nor do you come across as self-serving, as in you are really only there to boost your own public presence. Well done, Ben. Mike, there is something about you that conveys a purity of heart that people simply do not have anymore and it is refreshing to the point where it is so redeeming it shows we still have a chance at being a decent society made up of decent people. I look forward to voting for both of you in the future presidential elections.

Industrial Arts. Home Economics. Not wasted time. I’m female and started a four year Carpentry apprenticeship in the mid 70’s. In 1980 I made $16 an hour using my hands and brain. I was the first journeyman female Carpenter in Michigan. I was not a victim. It was not always easy because it was new for me and the men I worked with. But I stuck it out and learned so much and found out I really enjoyed working outside and getting paid well. I repeat..I was not a victim of my status in life. I’m glad I didn’t go to the University of Michigan where liberal brainwashing began. #WalkAway Campaign.

Great discussion. When I went to school in NY in the 70s, there was a program called BOCES trade school--I think it's still around. They offered high school corses in many trades: electrician, plumbing, carpentry, auto repair/mechanic, etc. I always thought that was a valuable option for students who had marketable skills in trades rather than, say, STEM. If I were in HS today and didn't have a passion around STEM (I chose that path) I'd seriously consider trades. The advantages of pursuing trades are compelling--you graduate with almost no debt, you can find work in many cities (in the Boston/Cambridge area where I live and work, the demand is yuuuuuge) and you make good money. After a few years you could start your own business and make serious cash! It's like the old "joke" about the millionaire plumber living next to the million-dollar indebted Doctor.

Jobs can go away. You have to find something that the market wants or needs. I work in the oil business. Specifically I make advance turbine oils for high speed turbines. So long as their are generators and turbines, I'm good. But, the process are highly automated, and I'm there to make sure the machines run correctly. 10 years ago I would be the guy doing each step. Industrialization creep is very real. The only thing that keeps me safe is that the product is so damn profitable its not worth fully automating the processes, and the tolerances are very tight and to make an automated system that can hit those tolerances is very $$ and hard to do. The moment that changes, I'll worry.

Love Mike Rowe. He always seems to have a good grasp of what the average American is dealing with in their daily lives. Also love how Ben tries to gain the perspective of his guests with the issues he’s commented on in the recent past. I think that’s a significant tool for one to obtain truly objective opinions without trying to force that guest into thinking like they do in the process; which is something other hosts (mainly on the left) seem to be so fundamentally incapable of doing these days. This is exactly why I’m still a big fan of the Ben Shapiro show, despite the fact that I don’t necessarily 100% agree with all his opinions. 95% I typically agree with, but obviously I do have the capacity to think and assess situations for myself, to realize that Ben (and he’s smart enough to realize this also) is not always right about everything. But, I do value his intellectual personal and professional incites.

I once asked my mom why she married my dad. She had two answers.
    1. She didn't want anyone else to get him.
    2. He could "do things".
They were married for about fifty years.
He really could " do things". He would think of something he wanted and then just build it. He was amazing.

Great show I love the ads and Mike Row. The trades gap is growing and any effort to stop the growth is in my view worth the effort. When I went to high school there were 2 trades high school's that were dedicated to teaching the skills needed to succeed in life. Both schools are now dedicated to teen mothers, and no the teen fathers don't get to go to school with their kids. 🙁
