That’s not even the start of Roy’s story. The guy lost his parents to TB before he was 10, dropped out of school at 15 to support his family, went to the Korean War stepped on a land mine, had to learn how to speak and walk again, and then went to Vietnam and did all this.

another crazy thing about benavidez is that a couple years before this in the beginning of the war he stepped on a land mine and was hospitalized and told he would never walk again, and then spent a year in the hospital and WALKED out of the hospital. this just adds to an already insanely impressive life as told in the video

The thing about the guy in first place is that 3 years before he did all that crazy stuff, he stepped on a landmine and lost his ability to walk completely. He was prepared to be medically discharged from the army when he decided to crawl out of his bed every night, propping up against walls and taught himself to walk again. It took him a year and and an unbelievable amount of pain, so much so that he used to cry because it.
