  • The legendary Musicradio WLS with John "Records" Landecker rockin' out in 1977! This is real LIVE Top 40 radio "From Chicago!". AM radio sucks now because it doesn't rock and fun to listen to like this. To a 15 year old in Oklahoma (where I taped this in my bedroom) WLS was an amazing sounding radio station. The huge reverb WLS used made DJ's sound like they were broadcasting from a mountaintop. Landecker was doing crazy things on the air that no night jock in Oklahoma was doing. And we had some wild ones in Tulsa (Crazy Steve on KTFX "Superfox 103") and OKC (Lester "Boogie Man" Micheals on KOFM, now doing mornings for "Magic 95" in Lawton OK) back then.
I was going to edit out the commercials but they are just too much fun. (be sure to listen for the Vagisil commercial at 5:24 !)
I recorded this on a cheap MacDonald AM/FM & Cassette recorder in my bedroom in Oklahoma. The old K-Mart 90 minute cassettes were in rough shape after 33 years. I did my best to clean up the sound quality with Sound Forge. It's still very rough in spots, especially when the signal starts getting weaker. But mine may be the only tapes of these broadcasts that have survived all these years..who knows??
Thanks and have fun listening! And thank you John for the laughs!
    Billy G.
(DJ on KAYE, KXVQ, KWPR, KSGL, KHYM, KEGG, KWRD/KGRI, and KKTX)

There will never be another like Landecker. He got away with incredibly hilarious stuff that would have gotten anyone else canned immediately, because he was incredibly hilarious. You would think scratching the mike during the feminine products spot is an immediate pink slip. Mocking the store owner reading his own copy on the jewelry spot....wow. . And it went on and on. And the ratings were tremendous. Incredible voice, incredible talent, and the super cool snark. I'm still in stitches.

More please. Every weeknight of my youth for years I'd have my greasy little face pressed up to the radio to hear "Boogie Check" and crib some cracks to pass off as my own at school the next day. I owe you for whatever popularity I had, John Landecker, you were Mad Magazine on the radio and you were awesome.

I remember listening to WLS while living about 40 miles outside of Chicago back in the 70's. Those were the days!! The Boogie Checks were always entertaining. When I enlisted in the Army as an MP I was very surprised to find out that while working the midnight shift patrolling I could pick up WLS out of Chicago all the way in Pennsylvania!!! Those 50,000 watts sure travelled!!

I listened to WLS in 76,77 overnight from rural Northwest Arkansas as a kid. Through my little AM radio.

I remember when I was a kid in the sixties and I lived in Tulsa Oklahoma late at night 12 1/2 in the morning we could pick up WLS I even heard tell of people in Dallas Texas getting WLS it was pretty neat because light at night they would crank the old power button way up or you could get them they don't make disc jockeys anymore like they used to or radio stations like they used to I miss the a.m. sound thank you for posting this commercial

We were listening to WLS in Duncan, OK....good times!!! Thank you for posting this! And, I loved that "mountaintop" sound their DJs had. Wished they'd done that in OK. Very cool.

Brings back great memories. Being in the car going wherever. My mom, bro, and myself loved WLS, but my dad was a talk show guy...WIND. But he always seemed to have it on WLS for us when we were together. When we moved to Cincinnati in 1983 it was sorely missed, but as we traveled back up to Chicago to visit family, it was an enjoyment when we got north of Indianapolis or so to tune it in.

I'm (very)late to post here, but, I remember listening to John Landecker while at college(Purdue). W.Lafayette was maybe 80 miles se of Chicago. So WLS banged in loud and clear. I more than once found myself sitting there w/my mouth open almost in shock at John's antics!

Goosebumps hearing this wonderful radio recording ,I lived at Detroit at the time and it reminds me of the AM days and the Big 8 -CKLW Radio station from Windsor Canada. Some of the commercials are exactly the same as the ones I heard back in the day at Detroit.!!!

Wow....this really brings it back for me. Landecker and Larry Lujack were the reason why I wanted to get into radio. I used to listen on one of those ball radio's, and during the winter when the sun went down early we could pick up WLS on any radio in Northern Minnesota. My parents damn near killed me when they saw 6 phone calls to Susan Platt when she worked the overnights and I just wanted to get on the air somehow. Luckily enough, I got to spend 20 working in radio, and it was a blast!

Always been a fan of Chicago Top 40 radio. WLS, WBBM, WMET and WCFL were all great. I have a May 1976 John "Records" Landecker aircheck that's one of my faves. Pretty sure WLS was still an ABC owned station in 1977.

WLS was owned by ABC from 1959 until 2007 when it was sold to Citadel, and then Citadel was bought by Cumulus.

I can't imagine John Landecker sitting through a vagisil commercial with a straight face. Never ever had a conversation about feminine itching with my mother. Just another unrealistic feminine hygiene product ad from the 70's.

People going on and on all the time about how great WABC/New York was. WABC couldn't touch WLS. Very quality Top-40 radio. I grew up in TN and could hear them both. WABC was intrinsically weak. WLS was strong.

The apostrophes around Records are unnecessary. Records truly was his middle name.
