Times are changing like ever. Now even in America and Europe people are no longer interested to watch movies in theaters. The home theater is replacing the conventional cinema houses. Besides, Internet has given the opportunity to watch movies within the comfort of your home as and when desired.

Oh, how time passes, and all things change. I became a teenager in 1977 and I still remember all these classic cinemas. Every now and then, a group of us from the PAF Model School on Drigh Road would skip ("bunk") classes and take those "open air" buses, hanging on the sides to the sadr area to watch the cheap morning show for 1.00 Rupee!
These places had employed certain "guards" (mostly Mekranis) to keep the crown under control (it was needed LOL!) and if the line got too rowdy, the Mekranis who had a cut off water hose, would trash the crowd back into a semblance of order. It was great fun because the whipping was mostly symbolic, and nobody was ever hit with much force! Folks were all laughing while this circus was going on.
I'm trying to remember if it was Prince cinema or a different one that had the old CinemaScope screen, which was concavely curved. I saw "Ben Hur" on this screen, and it was a moving experience. Especially during the chariot race part. You felt that you were in the middle of it. I left Pakistan in 1983 and returned for the first time in 2010. What a culture shock. Everything had changed. I felt like a foreigner who did not belong but could speak and understand the language, if that makes sense. I wonder if Metropole Hotel is still standing.

It's always great to connect with those who share memories and concerns about the changing landscape, especially in the realm of cinema and historic landmarks in Pakistan, particularly in Karachi.
As of now (11/11/2024). As of now, the Hotel Metropole still stands but in dead condition, some portions of the bulding, including the entrance, have been demolished. Unfortunately, the overall condition of the building is not as vibrant as it once was. Its decaying into rumbles.
Habib Khan, a Pakistani billionaire, currently owns the property and had plans to replace it with a highrise building. However, there's an ongoing legal battle involving Habib Khan, the Sindh government, and the shop owners on the ground floor, claiming for compensations for there running business. The government is considering transforming the space into a children's park, although opinions on this idea vary.
The Sindh High Court has intervened, putting a halt to the demolition plans. The future of Hotel Metropole remains uncertain, caught in the middle of differing visions for its use.

Thank you for updating me. My parents were married in 1962 and the Valima was held at the Metropole hotel. I still have all the old photographs. My father passed away in 2017 in the US but ammi is still with us at 81. It was a beautiful venue back then. Many of the old pre-partition buildings are either gone or in ruins in Pakistan. We have so much history and yet we have no appreciation for it. Truly heartbreaking.@@hassanagha48

I saw the movie Die Hard in Nishat cinema in 1989. At that time the gallery of this cinema was undergoing renovation due to which I had to sit in the lower hall. There also had Prince, Plaza and a fourth cinema. At that time standing outside this cinema, I saw Mazar-e-Quaid from a distance for the first time. There was also an eye hospital behind Prince Cinema where I reached by walk from Sadar. I don't know what changes there will be now.

Even ban on Indian movies after 1965 war, the enthusiasm to watch movies in theaters did not die. e.g Pakistani movies with Waheed Murad and Zaba were so popular that theaters became full in no time. Classic and action English movies attracted all kinds of audiences. The main reason for success was easy and cheap access to almost all theaters. Time came when Karachi became bhanghi parha of the subcontinent after taking over by ruthless dictator Zia-ul-Haq and creation of mqm. Extremely difficulty in reaching even a place hardly few kilometers away from your home. The traffic jam, frequent crime on motorcycles, women unsafe to travel, very expensive transport resulted in destruction of theaters in Karachi. All theaters now converted into ugly buildings, garbage everywhere, pollution, showing Karachi once a city of Europe or America now living hell on earth.

We Pakistanis believe on overnight success which is a farce if you want to improve something. Inject new cast, Hire someone who can write a genuine film script (outsource it). It may not work in a shorter run but will surely leave an impact if one is stick to it. But nothing is possible if you don't have governmental support.

Our industry has never been taken care of by the authorities although it is one of the biggest entertainment industries. It may contribute millions to the GDP of the country provided freedom of expression and bold topics are permitted to be portrayed on silver screen. Moreover, investors should contribute in rebirth of cinema industry. Cineplex cinema houses can't attract middle class audience and that too with low standard copied material through movies. Innovation is badly needed with conventional storylines.

The Conntent and the SCRIPT is the Main POWER behind the Movies IF THE SCRIPT and The LANGUAGE is GOOD
THE FILM SUCCEED and the The MAIN and MOST IMPORTANT THING is PROJECTION ON THE MEDIA
But with DUE RESPECT I LIVE in LOS ANGLES The Language in The MOVIES IS sooooo VULGÄR that I Cant WATCH Those
Movies with my FAMILY and ALL THE LEADING stars like. ANGELINA JULIE BRT PAT MISSION IMPOSSIBLE HERO
Are using that Vulgar Dialog which is unbearable FOR ME but the way they Projected that MOVIES bring
MILLIONS and Millions of DOLLARS to their Country both INDIA and USA
    SHARIQ
