  • Widespread drug use, aggressive encounters and the stench of human waste - it’s all part of the daily commute for Light Rail Transit (LRT) riders in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
In this exclusive investigation, Global News explored transit safety issues in Edmonton, focusing on the city’s LRT system.
We spoke with numerous riders who said they often feel uncomfortable or unsafe inside the train station or on the train itself.
During our weeks-long investigation, reporter Morgan Black spoke with community members across the city and rode the LRT system, collecting images and video of the situation as well as speaking to local leaders to explore what’s next.

I was once on a bus going from a suburb to Vancouver on the highway during rushour. A passenger threatened to throw the operator through the window when the operator ignored him after telling him got too much pay for turning a wheel. I noticed the operator pushed a button on his dash and kept ignoring the guy threatening him. 3 minutes later, at a stop after the tunnel, transit cops boarded the bus and arrested the guy. I found out later the guy got charged with threatening the operator and endangering the lives of the passengers and got sentenced to 4 month in jail. But security work always holds a risk that the patrons said you were trying to remove from the area will become violent for any number of reasons. There is always a risk there’s always a danger there. That is why in security They preach to always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times because anything could happen. Just most of the time nothing dangerous happens. But there’s always at risk. And for example the city centre mall in Edmonton Alberta it is a hands-on site has multiple guards at least 20 at a time and they detain people there. It all depends on the contract. If the City of Edmonton chose to put more funding into their contracts for the LRT stations they would have the amount of security officers and abilities to detain people. Only in Edmonton can the city make public transit an inconvenience, rather than a convenience. The whole point of public transit infrastructure and governance is to make peoples daily commute bearable, but the city is too woke and weak to take hard action on crime, druggies, the homeless, queue jumpers, and the list goes on and on. The city councilors need to be fired and replaced with people that understand the basics of public transit management. Why is it that every time there’s an issue of crime being “mental health” or drug-related anywhere in Canada, everyone make it seem like their the victim. People say, “oh more consumption sites, better support for them, etc…” But in reality, they do damage either way. The general public and consumers should be top priority, we WORK and pay TAXES to live and have the right to safety. Look at the LRT systems even in some 3rd world countries, yeah sure their transit system is bad, but in some ways safer than Edmonton’s LRT stations.
Those counties have top security measures because crime rate in those counties are high. The government and safety enforcers in those counties have so much authority that criminals are faced with fear. Those counties know how to divide the working class and good contributors of society from the non-contributing citizens.
I’m from one of those counties, and I’ve noticed that the junkies and homeless in this city have major balls to do whatever they want. They don’t fear anyone, and you know why because the people and the government allow them to, they are always painted to be “the victims.” Lol they need authority and they need to be put to where they belong. They are draining out money from the working class and polluting the safety in the city and everywhere they go.

Vote with your feet people, if you don't like the way it is in Edmonton, consider moving to one of the many satellite cities around it, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove. They don't respond to car accidents and really don't do any traffic enforcement anymore including speed traps and check stops . So can someone tell me what the police are doing ? The relationship with the police started to sour over the lose of photo Rader cash cow and has just gotten worse . Wow, let’s not help human beings in distress! The open drug use is precisely because the province closed the sites. The drug issues are complicated and often caused by untreated trauma. Our health care system especially mental health care needs to be stepped up and combined with supervised drug sites we can start curbing these issues.

It's not just passengers or people hanging out at stations. It's the drivers too. I was doing transit from the airport to home with my kids under ages 12. Had to wait at City Center to transfer. Bus driver pulls up, and see's two indigenous without masks, and immediately drives off. I tried to wave him down to let us get on but nope. We had to hang out around some sketchy folk for another 45 minutes. Sadly I won't take transit with my kids again on weekends or evenings.

Shut it down at night & watch how far it will change in a matter of weeks, test the patience.. when they return after you reopen during operating hours, be ready with more security, fine trespassers and squatters for breaking the law.. its simple.. no one should feel bad or guilty for people who choose to sell and do drugs in public.. everyone should feel safe.. we don't want our children picking up dirty needles

I was coming home late from work at the end of February during a particularly brutally cold night. I wanted to take the steps down into the LRT around Bay Enterprise Square to warm up, but there were people huddled in the bottom of these stairwells using drugs, and completely blocking access. The worst part is that nothing was being done. No cops, no security, no nothing.

What has changed? It used to be decent and I never saw anything like this. Did our previous Mayor do more for the homeless? Or do more for Security at the LRT? Research what changed and bring back the old ways.

To observe n report by texting...n u know what. They will text back asking you to describe what the culprit is wearing. Who got the safe time to even text so much in snail pace?

The problem is the security service. The security officers are NOT intervening or patrolling the LRT stations as they should. I've personally seen security officers avoid drug users and squatters, preferring to stay away. Frankly, most security officers look like they don't want to be there at all! There's a serious security management problem , IMO.

I rely on transit to get to and from school and finding people shooting up drugs in the elevator so you awkwardly apologize and take the stairs is a standard at least weekly occurrence

Same on the LRT security and major, who takes this thing so normal and do nothing to stop this kind of abusing and unsafe place to travel. Put those addict and aggressive people to rehabilitation and educate them

Make bigger jails and lock these people up for life..
Not as prisoners but in a large enclosure, give them facilities, grass to walk on etc.
But they are already isolated so highly doubt they will see any difference
