  • Photos of all the CTA Bus Routes that I have gathered all throughout the internet, based on my memories of growing up in Chicago. They are in numerical order. It's a mixed bag of current, renamed and discontinued CTA bus routes, Song is Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.

I retired from driving a city bus in South Florida over 30 years ago. I remember that most of our destination signs indicated the community or neighborhood that the bus went to and the main street it used to get there (e.g., 'Oakdale via Griffin Blvd'). But the current digital destination signs mostly have the exact spot where the bus makes its last stop (e.g., 'Main Library' or 'East Broadway & Cleare Street'). This doesn't give the rider information regarding the route traveled to get to that particular intersection. But the main advantage of the current digital signs is they could be programmed to have other messages on there besides the route information. I've seen in South Florida buses with destination signs reading 'Now hiring drivers' alternating between the route number and destination. Or 'Bus full' or 'Wearing masks is required on this bus'.

I remember riding the 93rd East bus in the summer mid '80s and when the bus went into a deep turn, the window would fling open and slap back hard when it straightened out.

I remember those too. They were GM "fishbowl" buses with solid windows that didn't open because they were SUPPOSED to be air conditioned, which soon broke down. So people pushed the windows out of the frames. They were hinged at the top and flapped open and shut as the bus progressed. It was definitely a low point for the CTA.

I saw 2 busses with Drewery's beer advertisements on the front of the bus. One was a Drewery's Bock. I love the Chicago beer advertisement stuff!

I didn't include all the current and past CTA bus routes, because of unavailability of photos, the length of the video, and for nostalgic purposes. It was the best I could do, because I did it all myself. Most of the current buses will probably be saved for another video down the road. Thank you.

It looks like a majority of these pics were from the 60s and some in the 70s and a few from the 80s. The Addison pic had students, I wonder what school that was, maybe Lane Tech?
