As you'll soon discover, I'm not a professional interviewer. As a lover of history, it was important that Kerry's legacy not be lost to the elements of time, and wanted to document his stories and recollections for his family...we thought it good enough to share with the general public.

After following Kansas for many years and buying Every album in the 70s and 80s,, I saw AD in Lincoln NE in the summer of 1984--I think. I was in total Awe to see Kerry Livgren's new band, and it was a life-changing experience. AD was absolutely amazing and I listened to the first album for literally hundreds of hours. thank God for Kerry's salvation and putting this band together!... awesome. . I wish Kerry all the best...
Thanks, John, for posting these interviews. Who can explain why we connect with certain music, but from the time I was 15 (in 1975), I felt connected to Kansas' music and specifically, to the songs Kerry wrote. Song for America was my intro, and it remains a song that I think still influences so much of my musical taste. It was more than just entertainment to me, it was an important part of my life. I still love his music - it is attached to some of the most precious memories I have. Needless to say, my children grew up listening to Kerry's music as well - they didn't really have any choice.

Similar story..I first saw Kansas in 1975,during the Song For America tour..and my kids grew up with Kansas,A.D.,and Kerry Livgren music.
I love Song for America too. Also Journey from Mariabronn, and Lamplight Symphony.

Seed of change is a masterpiece album. dygertron u-tube the dream of the Christmas guitar. Little story Steinhart/Moon band use to play at a pool hall near my home, in st.pete, Fla. Place called Pockets.I witnessed to Robbie, infortunately he was developing a bad drinking problem.One of the greatest Rock vocalist of all time. This was in 1994-1996.
We all will receive salvation whether you become a born-again Christian or not. It's available for all. That's what God is all about. It's not a contest , nor do you need to jump through hoops to get to heaven

John Bowes, you are almost a spitting image of Roger Taylor, the drummer in Queen :)

I'd never say "never"...but I've heard nothing related to new Proto Kaw music, though Kerry is still recording and working on his Cantata...

Who is this John Bowes? He acts as if he is some kind of music industry insider, but I've never heard of him.
He's just a close friend of Kerry's who decided the personal interviews he was recording for archiving with the Kansas State Historical Society and the Livgren family should be shared with the public...
John, I really appreciate you sharing the interviews. You seemed to know a lot about music so I was just curious if you worked for the recording industry or a magazine/webzine.
I've been a musician since I was a small child...I've heard Kerry tell these stories many times...felt it important to get some of them down for the enjoyment of others....

I don't understand this need people have for a particular religion. Searching or asking questions is normal. Having to have those questions answered in a nice tidy box is what I do not understand.

DUST was written before Kerry had an encounter with Jesus...he didn't become a believer because he found a "tidy box" of answers (he was raised in church and thought he was a Christian)...he became a follower after having an "encounter"...a life changing "encounter" with the Spirit of Christ....just like if I met you face to face...after meeting you, I'd be a liar to claim otherwise.

I agree with him, religion has done nothing but divide people and limit our understanding of the universe, typically, out of fear. That's my opinion. I sense a real conviction to their faith. The interviewer even seemed like a decent guy. Kerry’s Christian witness seems real and hard won. But until Christians, of whom I consider myself one (struggling with doubts) speak the words that “Donald Trump is a false prophet”, there will be some gap there. Sorry but religion does drive politics and I don’t know if I’d be welcome showing up at Topeka Bible Church talking about false prophets. If so, sorry to make uneducated inferences. I would have to ask my brothers and sisters there at some point after getting to know each other a bit, whether they feel that Jesus would want you to be bowing down to such a cruel and petty man. I’d ask that you speak out against such behavior and not hide behind it’s “strength” because it’s politically expedient. It would definitely allow me to respect Christians more. I think you can keep your convictions, yet still call sin when you see it. Again, sorry to the interviewer and indeed Kerry, if the Topeka Bible Church folks have already spoken out against the dishonesty and assault on, what I’d hope we can all agree on as, decency.

Well as "that guy"...thank you. I originally, put together this interview series for the Livgren family members to archive, etc. for future generations. We thought it turned out well enough to extend it to the public. Comments have sometimes been very harsh from this gallery who were "invited to look over our shoulder".
Andy, I appreciate your honest candor about the relationship of faith, church and politics in today's culture. I can assure you that you would be warmly welcomed at Topeka Bible Church, and that you would find a congregation of mixed political alignment, which is more focused on Christ than on whom the latest individual is occupying the White House.
For myself, here is a recent post from my Facebook account which is where I firmly stand on such issues:
"I’ve recently been bothered by a tendency that I see in our culture with Evangelicals and elements of conservative thought to wrap Jesus in an American flag, and make him a member of the G.O.P., National Rifle Association, etc. 🙂 Yeah, come on, you’ve seen it...
“I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a shit. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night.”

If this isn’t the most badass quote from a pastor ever recorded, I don’t know what is...Though his existence was only recently brought to my attention, I can already tell I like this guy. My frustrations with many people (myself included) who claim to follow Jesus are summed up in those three statements.
“There are 2,000 verses of Scripture that tell us we must be committed to protecting the poor and the oppressed… There is no concern of Scripture that is addressed so often and so powerfully as reaching out to the poor.”
Campolo points out that while abortion and gay rights are two of the most divisive issues in politics and a huge reason Evangelicals tend to be conservative, these are not the most important issues on which Christians must take a stand. As the above quote shows, Christianity has more important things to think about. So even though abortion and gay rights deserve careful moral consideration, they should not decide one’s political party. On Judgment Day, Jesus doesn’t ask you about your doctrinal beliefs or political opinions. Do you believe in the Virgin birth? Trinity? That abortion is wrong? No. He asks you how you treated the poor, hungry, imprisoned, thirsty, etc. A life devoted to Christ cannot neglect the poor and the oppressed, for it is in service to them that we live up to Christ’s call.
So…I really like my Jesus wearing a shepherd’s robe or flannel shirt and blue jeans…and while I love my country…in my opinion, wrapping him in a flag and political party tends to compromise His mission...and push away those who He'd never leave behind."

John, I can’t thank you enough for your thoughtful reply. It was courageous (in these times) to consider a big picture view of Christ’s mission. Much respect! And, indeed if I find myself in Topeka on a Sunday morning, I wouldn’t hesitate to visit (in peace) the Topeka Bible Church assembly.
