  • After two matches in the 23/24 Premier League, Arsenal are one of just three clubs with a 100% win rate but despite positive results, Arteta’s men look a little bit sluggish compared to their impressive performance’s last season. So in this video, Statman Dave tries to assess what’s changed, how Arteta can get Arsenal firing again and whether the problem lies with Thomas Partey at right back. Are Arsenal just getting started? Is it all down to Gabriel Jesus’ injury? Does Partey get into Arsenal’s best XI? Find out on The Premier League Review.

I think the only reason Partey left the DMF for RFB was due to the Timber/Zinchenko void at LFB - with Tomiyasu less effective at inverting, the role of inverted RFB was being filled by Partey. I think Partey will go back to DM when Zinchenko starts at LFB - and based on Zinchenko's appearance at Palace, I think that'll happen against Fulham.

The analysis presumes that the solution to Arsenal’s system change is reverting back to their system of last year. But if we take Arteta at his word that Gabriel has been on the bench for tactical reasons, Zinchenko inverting and Partey sitting on the bench doesn’t change White’s positioning at all. He’s still locked where he is and Rice is being forced out to the right-hand side where he doesn’t have the same connection & understanding that Partey has with Odegaard and Saka. It could be developed over time, but that’s not what Arsenal is doing. It seems Arteta wants to use a back 3 so he can push 2 CBs up to act more like the 6s. It seems to provide more cover to stop counter attacks and provide faster responses to attempts to play through the middle by creating more overloads in that part of the pitch. Benching Partey doesn’t solve those problems with this formation. Instead, it exacerbates them, because Zinchenko doesn’t have Partey’s defensive capabilities and isn’t on the right. This seems like a system specific situation being prepared for the CL.
A lot of this is also born out of the statistics last season. Against CP at Selhurst Arsenal had 44% possession, a shared field tilt, 2 big chances, & an xG of 1 to CP’s 1.2. In the 2nd game against Leicester, it was definitely more favorable with 50% possession, better field tilt, 5 big chances and an xG of 2.96 to Leicester’s .46. (0-2 & 4-2 respectively). This seasons, against Nottingham Forest: 78% possession, incredible field tilt, 0 big chances, xG .83 to NF’s 1.18. Against Crystal Palace: 53% possession (67% before the red), great field tilt until the red, 3 big chances and xG of 2.02 to CP’s 1.01.
Essentially, Arsenal are doing more to control the game and doing better with the chances they do get. That’s all positive. Why would you revert to worse?

    • @kazielbonn
      @kazielbonn Před 8 měsíci

If we revert to an inverting left-back like last season, I hope Arteta gives Kiwior that spot instead of Zinny for a run of games to see how he does. I feel he would do a brilliant job there. Not as creative but much more solid defensively than Zinny, could prove to be the right balance for an inverted left back and a bombing forward overlapping Benny Blanco.

Dave, rather than drop Partey against Fulham I would put Partey back at CMF, have Rice and Odegaard in the No. 8 roles, and follow your suggestion for the back line (Zinchenko, Gabriel, Saliba and White). Up front, with Ream on suspension, I would replace Nketiah with Trossard (1st choice) or Havertz (2nd choice), but start Martinelli and Saka as normal. The Cottagers' back line will be at 6s and 7s all afternoon. If we're ahead by 2 or 3 (and I hope we will be) at the 60th minute, I would want Nelson, ESR or Vieira to get some playing time and preserve the legs of Saka, Nketiah and Martinelli.

You lose an attaching 8 (Havertz) for a defensive one (Rice). So you’re line up is more defensive and less progressive than Arteta. It’s that simple as to why he keeps choosing this line up against “inferior” teams. Get as many progressive attackers on against low possession opposition.
He’s likely to go with your line up against harder apposition and away in the Champions League.

I don't think it's fair to use last season tactics as a comparison for the current one. We can't play only Rice or Partey, specially if Zinchenko goes back into the squad. His defensive output is terrible, specially on counter attacks. I don't see Arteta moving away from the double pivot, since it gives his attackers more freedom and flexibility.
Also, when you talk about the lack of balance, you forget about Havertz or Martinelli dropping into the middle when Eddie drops to the right. With Xhaka we couldn't do that, that's why we had those more "straightworward" methods of attacking.

That part. People don’t realize the value of Partey’s pace of play. Every touch and pass is attempted to push the pace of play so Arsenal gets into good positions quicker. His quick precise passing is the reason Saka and Odegard had so many opportunities to create last season.

That’s a great point about the avg position. And also if you watch the game back, White actually joins Saka a fair bit. Either Rice or Partey slot into the back 3 when White picks his moments to overlap.
And I find this whole argument about White being hampered a bit strange considering he is actually playing in the exact same position regardless of whoever inverts (Partey/ Zini). When they invert, White becomes the right of a back three in either scenario.

Good analysis - although it really shows how much of a one-trick pony we were last season in using the White-Saka connection. It also demonstrates the need for variety in how we attack and against what opposition - exploiting weaknesses in the teams we face and exerting greater control over games. It remains to be seen how we improve with this new system, but results are positive so far, even if the general feeling when watching both initial games is that it was closer than it should have been and we were lucky to make it through.

I see your point Dave with the average position charts you showed, but I rewatched the first half and White actually goes into the final third a few times.
Also, him joining up with Saka less must be an instruction because he is technically standing in the same passion, right of a back three (in possession) wether it’s Zini or Partey inverting. It doesn’t matter who inverts, White ends up right of a back three in both line-ups (when we are in possession).

Partey is in rotation to keep him fit and at peak condition for the big games where Arsenal must balance stronger defensive midfield and creative pivot out of defence against stronger teams. From the two games i have seen so far, i think we need to revert Ben White back to his usual right back position as it will provide us more freedom and balance on the right hand side of the team as Dave has correctly pointed out.
The Partey situation is an interesting one.
Personally i would now only use him only in the key games against the top 8 sides as the 6 role which would allow Rice to be promoted into the 8 position where he can improve his abilities further up the pitch when Arsenal attack.
Against the smaller opposition Arsenal should consider Rice in the 6 role and place Trossard and Odegaard as the 2 number 8s behind the main striker (Jesus or Nketiah). This tactic I believe will make our play more dynamic. I feel that with Havertz currently in the box to box midfield role our general build up play to the final 1/3 is too slow meaning our two wingers are not being used as effectively in terms of our patterns of play in attack.
With Trossard instead implemented in the 8 role it will provide a fresh dimension as his ability to carry the ball, create chances and operate in the wider areas will open doors to our front 3 and Odegaard.

I get the point that Partey is not the ideal RB - but he will adapt to the role quickly. I thought he looked a lot better against CP than Forest in the first game, but the red card meant he had to do a lot more defensive responsibility than usual and the flow of the game didn't allow for the new formation to show it's strengths as much as I expect it will soon.
This season Arteta is expecting that teams are going to be doubling (or even tripling) up on Saka, and the inverting role of Partey and overlapping of White is aimed to create more flexibility on the right-side for creating chances. In addition, the focus on the right-side is creating more space for Martinelli on the left.
Personally I don't think reverting to last seasons formation is a step-forward as teams will be more prepared for that, and I believe Arteta is trying to make the team even more tactically flexible with this 3-2-2-3 attacking shape. After a few games we'll see how it evolves, but I think it's too early to judge as we haven't seen the full potential yet.

I think as exciting as it was with last season's setup you've got to factor in that because of White being so up high, teams started playing long balls into that channel turning games into tennis like matches. Post World cup every team they faced played long balls to that zone.
Arteta is trying to fix this and he'll want to stop those kinds of matches happening first. Just look at how compact Arsenal are. Look at the counter press. Arsenal need to be more boring this season if they are to win stuff. Attacking fluency will come later when the player's get used to the new way of playing and when Zini and Jesus are back. Even players like Trossard will probably make the dynamics work better.
Neutrals finding your team exciting isn't always a good thing because it means that the opposition is also in the fight. Arteta wants to get rid of that fight completely. Make it as boring as possible because the opposition don't get a kick.

Probably eventually he needs to go and start for a Palace Or West Ham? But he works hard and contributes. A goal in a 2-1 and got the penalty in a 1-0.

Arsenal simply lack an elite striker to knock the goals in with high confidence in most situations in combination with team goals. I'm guessing Havertz is supposed to boost goals and assists and variety of chances? Timber made Arsenal look like one of the elite teams for sure when he played. Doing a lot across defence and midfield and deep in the opposition half.

I totally disagree with the Analysis, one ought to look at the impact of all players for the whole team’s effectiveness, in my view Havetz is the weakest link and Arteta had wanted him to do what Oodegard does with Saka on the right with Martinelli so that we can be potent in both sides , if the left side was potent, we wouldn’t be talking about this , so in my opinion we are blaming the best performing part of arsenal without realising that for it to perform optimally, the other side ought to perform. If lb had Tierney/ Zinch , Trossard and Martinelli and right Partey , Oordegard and Saka.

Rice will take some of the load off him, ad Jorginho can rotate with him to keep him fit. Against City we were as good as when we had Petit and Vieira playing together. We looked very solid, did not look solid against Forest or Palace.. Whats this nonsense tactics, trying to be too clever. Keep it to a 4 4 2, with White at RB.

Arsenal is the most frustrating club to support. The pitfalls and player management inefficiencies are clear to the casual observer. Partey should never be used at RB, Havertz cannot be a starter yet, and Nketiah is wasteful. You simply cannot be title contenders with mediocre team management.

In my opinion, Havertz right now is a passenger and disrupting this system by taking out a fullback or Partey as a midfielder to accommodate him and it doesn't feel like the sacrifice is bearing any sort of fruit. Arsenal do NOT look more potent going forward.
Like many fans, I question this acquisition, because it just seems that Mikel has disrupted his entire system that he got working last season to bring this guy in and it makes no sense to me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Arsenal needed a 25-30 goals a season striker, £65m should get you, or at least getting you three quarters towards such a player. There has been no evidence thus far in the Premier League that Havertz will fit that bill to me....
I'm getting Ozil vibes, but at least I could tell you what Ozil was good at when he decided to show up. I can't even tell you what Havertz's best traits are, anyone have any ideas?
Chelsea are in bad need of a striker themselves to 99% complete their squad and they sell Havertz to Arsenal - what does that tell you?
