  • After relistening to alot of older work from Joey Bada$$ recently, I couldn't help but to think, whatever happened to PRO ERA? They seemed to have a TON of hype, and just never lived up to the expectations they set when they first started to burst onto the Hip Hop scene.

They never fell off, they organically went on their own path. Plus, STEEZ’s death effected the collective, similar to what happened to A$AP MOB when Yam$ passed. They were the heart and soul of the movements

You only mention 3 Joey projects and American korruption. After 2012 Joey released rejex, rejex 2. Pro era released the secs tape and all of their members have released a lot of their own projects that have done well. It seems like you aren’t much of a fan of pro era, It’s pretty obvious that you just listened to Joey,s 3 albums that are on mainstream streaming platforms and took a quick glance at the pro era wiki page, then decided to make a video on them without being too informed

Well, Capital Steez died. He was the one with the vision that united the whole group. Joey in 2013 had a different style than in 2012, and it didn't fit with the rest of the squad as well. Capital Steez would have been more interesting of an artist had he lived.

Nick Caution's mixtape was tuff but it didn't stick with me the way RUDEBWOY did, that album is an honorable mention for best pro era releases in my opinion behind 1999, B4DA$$, Amerikkian Corruption, AMBadass and maybe PEEP.

And Peep the aprocolypse wasn’t their first. It was the first Seccs Tape. And their only competitor wasn’t only odd future at the. They came up during the “new New York wave” where a lot of solidified ny rappers came up and some fell off like ASAP mob, action Bronson, bodega bamz, suicideboyz, Troy Ave etc. And CJ Fly is arguably amazing, all his single projects are fire. I feel like they haven’t even fallen off, I feel like they have a cult following and they’ll remain underground considering they have their own label and it’s doing well for the underachievers sales wise. They never fell off or loss popularity. Joey is a A List Celebrity, actor, and fashion icon. Nyck and CJ are still making music, touring and have a VERY LARGE fan base.
Chuck is still making music and is in high demand for production out LA. Powers Pleasant is still DJing heavily and doing ALOT of shows.
By the way CJ is just as big as Joey on the underground scene. He just dropped a project recently.

As a collective, they missed their window. Cause they could’ve and should’ve been WAAAYYY bigger. I always compare them to OF cause of their collective talent but Odd future split too, yet all of them collectively are more well known than that of Pro Era. Frank is one of the most sought after artist that people feign to hear, Tyler is doing BIG things! Syd & the internet are doing their THING!.. Earl has the underground on lock with the alchemist, Knxwledge and all of them.. Domo doing his thing! Even Hodgy Beats aka Jerry has rebranded himself and is making it musically…. They’re all killing it with names for themselves… on the other hand, If you wasn’t true fan of Pro Era you won’t really know who Dirty Sanchez is or A la sole aka Aaron Rose, or Dyemond Lewis (who left the group), or Dessy Hinds, a lot of people don’t even really know Kirk like that. So they definitely could’ve been bigger.. & STEEZ passing away had a lot to do with it.. RIP King CAPITAL

I felt the label didn't give a damn about pro era and mainly just joey and a very select few members of pro era. So the label put most of the marketing and budget behind joey and let the rest of the group fall to the wayside.
Plus the fact that music started to evolve more and pro era got boxed into the classic 90s rap hip hop genre. OG pro era fans like the classic old zchool style, but it doesn't appeal to new listeners that much. So their fanbase doesn't grow but instead it stagnates and slowly decreases because many of the pro era members dont consistently drop music. But idk if they're not dropping music because of label politics or because they just aren't dropping. But I think that's what struck a major blow to pro era, not dropping And being boxed into 90's hip hop. Cuz even Flatbush and underachievers weren't boxed in as 90's rappers, they had their own unique sound. I think the zombies outlasted the others because everything they do comes from in house. No label cuckery and they don't have to rely on any outter entity for beats merch and release dates

I think another important part of Joey's career was when XXXTentacion died. They seemed to make a really strong bond within the time that they knew eachother and for Joey to lose someone else that was close to him must have been devastating.

Good video/breakdown. I love Pro Era. You're right that they definitely just had that combination of swag, skills, & style, especially for a group so young. I didn't get into a lot their group stuff, besides Joey's material where they were featured, until the last couple years. But been listening to them heavily since. I obviously knew them because of Joey & have always loved his flow as he's one of my favorite contemporary rappers. They could've been really special as a group. Like you said I think two of the big reasons they fell off as a group was that they really were #1. Just too big in size. It's hard to be very successful over a long period of time with a group that big. Even Wu-Tang during their rise focused on a lot of their solo projects for 4 years (with a lot of features from other members) before they dropped their second group album in 1997. & I think that was the right move. #2. reason was definitely Steez's death. Suffering a loss of someone who had that kind of impact, leadership & skills to a group would be devastating & I just don't see how you'd be able to recover from that fully or how it'd ever be the same. He probably would've been one of the all time greats had he lived even a few years longer. I'm sure there were other reasons but feel like those were big factors that kinda killed their buzz/progress. I'm still a huge fan & will always bump their stuff. Fav. posse cuts besides Suspect (Third Eye Shit) are Last Cypher (Peep The Aprocalypse) & Sorry Bonita (Summer Knights). Those tracks really showcases all their skills. But with that said, hard not to think what could've been.

It’s tough for groups
