I read a lot of comments on here talking about how impossible this looks and sounds or that it's sped up. It's not sped up I've seen both these guys play this fast numerous times. Jake didn't start it as fast as it ended Trey sped up when he started his first solo. Don't let this discourage any of you, I'm getting ready to turn 63 and I play this fast and clean after 50 years of flatpicking. I play along with it and play both of their solos. I'm not saying this to brag none of you know me but I say it to tell you that with practice it's amazing what you can accomplish. I've taught lots of people to flatpick over the years and one of the biggest stumbling blocks is people not trusting practice. Practice never fails to make you better. Practice always, always works. If you want to play this fast you must practice playing this fast. Use a metronome and gradually increase it, I promise it works if you work on it.
I noticed the pace pick up during Trey's break. While impressive, speed is only a part of bluegrass. But, once you attain it, it makes playing slower stuff that much easier and hopefully, tastier too. I'm 70 and play a D-35 with medium strings. Have for a long time. Some of the most memorable times I've had have been when putting notes around the melody that add and embellish the tune. One jam, a girl I never met before was standing near me as I did 'fills' to a tune. After I finished, she said, "That was really nice", I said thanks, and just kept playing. As you say, practice is so important and a good guitar/instrument will inspire you to pick it up and pick. I've kicked myself forever for not buying a Santa Cruz D-18 style guitar that I played in a store years ago. I didn't have $2500 handy, but it really sang to me. I know someone, somewhere has this guitar in their room and plays it regularly. That someone was almost me, but hey, it didn't happen.
Since I joined the guitar community years ago I noticed a group of players who constantly harp on how shredding and playing a million notes at lightspeed has no soul or feel blah blah blah. These guys are tearing it up and everything still sounds super musical, great stuff!
I DID IT! I CAN DO IT JUST AS FAST AND MAYBE EVEN QUICKER AND WHEN I PLAY ALONG I DONT HEAR ONE MISTAKE. GLAD I GOT IT! IVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS FOR A MONTH. IM GOING TO PUT THE STRINGS BACK ON MY GUITAR TOMORROW. LOL
Remember when you were little and growing up and somebody told you, "Kid, nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it, work hard, and don't give up". Well... here's the video to prove it.
No. This kind of virtuosity isn’t possible for whoever who wants it badly enough. Some of us have more limits than others and some have higher ceilings. There is a gift involved here that not everyone has.
No matter how much one practices, only a few will ever achieve this due to physical limitations of individual bodies. Same reason that not everyone can be an Olympic athlete, no matter how hard they try.
@@optionspop4347 apparently, you missed the analogy completely. Fast picking requires fast twitch muscles in hands and very fine motor skills for finger placement accuracy on fretboard and pickin the correct string at exactly the right time. You never thought that far along in the process. Must be a non-musical type.
Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, David Grissman, Alison Krauss, Mark O'connor, Sam Bush, Rhonda Vincent, the list goes on and on, created multiple generations of ppl like us (me) that want to perfect the bluegrass craft and keep it alive. I was taught to dance with who brought you to the party. Those men/women created monsters in a lot of us. These 2 young men are prime examples! Im thankful for it. Exactly--as good as it gets. Two of the greatest players on old D18s. I try to keep up with them on my 1937 D18, at 3/4 speed, but can't quite do that. Yet! The joy of American Roots Music on Martin Guitars!
This is insane good! Blistering pace with laser precision execution. It ranks up there with Joscho Stephan's rendition of "China Boy" at CAAS back in 2006, another jaw-dropping flat-picking spectacle saved to my favorites.
HOLY SMOKES!!!! To play THAT FAST & PRETTY DARN CLEAR & then PLAY A HARMONY PASSAGE AT THAT SPEED ALSO???!!! WHEW!!! Jake, Trey, I dunno that "TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY" can adequately describe my reaction to the pickin' that you two just did here!!! WAY TO FLAT BURN IT UP GUYS!!! Greatest Respects & Highest Regards!!! I recorded this at the 2018 IBMA at the Bluechip Booth. Both guys playing vintage D-18's. I'll try to find my original post with the years of the guitars.
Pornographic amount of badassery here. This is weapons grade flat picking mixed with chicken picking mixed with baby eagle feathers and the juice extract of 100$ bills
I'm so glad that these 2 guys play slow and medium paced stuff as well, so well. This version of 'Big Mon' is an amazing feat playing precisely at such speed but it can get into acoustic 'shredding' if over done. Mostly chromaticised pentatonic scales but the skill and drive needed is obvious. Don't get me wrong. I love it. Now I'll go away an practice some more or enjoy some Norman Blake 😀
Yep I so agree Rob! And I'm guessing ( i bet you concur as well ) these guys are pros and prob know that "To Shred is Awesome.. but to keep it special, and also play a variety of tempos, is DIVINE! ! :)
I absolutely love bluegrass but I'm still fairly new to its world. Can anyone please tell me the name of the tune they are playing together? I didn't have the good fortune of this music be a part of my life growing up, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can now. I welcome any recommendations about how best to learn of its rich heritage. Thanks in advance.
Coffee watches this to wake up in the morning.
Nice
good one!
Funniest comment I’ve ever come across 🤣
Haha 😄
I can't even listen that fast.
i was gonna say i can even play rhythm that fast......but i'll go with what u said.....they were flyin
That is so funny! Exactly🙂

Hanging my head in shame, I will now burn my guitar
Bah, I'll have a cover of this up b4 bed tonight. (secretly shuts down computer, burns all guitars in the house)
lol
Lol hey man, nice seeing you here, I’ve seen you all around CZcams on a bunch of other bluegrass videos😂
Lol
I two for one can say
How could anyone fail to be completely and happily blown away by this?
Maybe they are hive lizards that have no creativity?
I mean, it does have less than 3mins... which kinna makes me sad there.
How to do that: 1) Be really talented 2) Devote your life to it 3) Work hard at it every day 4) Truly enjoy what you are doing.
No notes were left out. They hit ‘em all.
Guitar Skill Level = Olympic Gold Medalist
Just set my metronome to these guys & it freakin exploded. Damn!
That is the most amazing thing I've ever seen! WOW! 😲

"...one of the biggest stumbling blocks is people not trusting practice." You nailed it. Also, relatedly, people not fully appreciating muscle memory.

Loved it! First time at regular speed; second time at .75 speed and enjoyed it much better. Awesome playing!
Great playing from two of the best upcoming flatpickers

Trey and Jake are treasures!
WOW! I got tendonitis just from watching that.
Find myself watching this every month or so. Gets me hyped every time.
Unbelieveable! Thats what I'm talkin about. Two of the very best in the world .loved every note. At least everone I could catch. Wow!
I think they broke the sound barrier !
as Clarence and Doc look down grinning...

Jake plays the cleanest fastest most technical break for Big Mon in the history of the world.
Trey is like " hold my beer".

Two of the best for sure.

I believe you are very correct
Both of these guys are doing very well. Trey is from a area near me. He's went leaps and bounds past what anyone thought he would do.
He played the Opry at 11, what were y'all expecting?
