Ex-Pilot Who Took Magic Mushrooms Before Hijack Attempt Speaks Out

- The pilot who tried to hijack a flight in mid-air after consuming psychedelic mushrooms is speaking out for the first time. Joseph David Emerson says that his extreme depression led to his mushroom-induced freakout. In an interview, Emerson says he started drinking to numb the pain of losing a close friend following a massive heart attack. He says he turned to mushrooms and not antidepressants because he was afraid he would be grounded by the airline.

You didn't follow the explanation. The idea is that the depression resulted in a bad trip (effects include paranoia, confusion, and frightening hallucinations). Was it wise to take shrooms in that state? No, but could he have foreseen that it would result in such extreme behavior? I think not.

People dont understand how badly the FAA treats pilots with any mental health issue. Lets not villify this man and instead call the faa out for its outdated mental health standards.
He took mushrooms instead of anti depressants because he thought he would be grounded? Like… What?
It's a bit of an issue with pilots because if they seek mental healthcare, they can be grounded because it marks them as a risk since there have been cases where pilots have crashed planes as a way to commit suicide, but that does mean that they might still have those issues and just not get any help, which is obviously even worse.
@@Potatoe-f6uimagine the number of people he put at risk when he was actually the one flying the plane depressed like that

You can’t take antidepressants and fly a commercial plane
The faa does not allow pilots to fly when they use antidepressants and they will know if you have a prescription. The faa obviously does not allow mushrooms but they can not test for mushrooms in the required drug tests because it would be too expensive. I am a student pilot this information is reliable
If he was having bad mental health like that he needs to not fly in the first place especially on drugs

Nope. You nearly killed a plane full of people. You don't get to play the victim.
That's not how being a victim works.
Sorry, but if you suffer from depression, you should not be a pilot. I wish there was more screening of their mental health.
There is screening during the medical process, but pilots have to lie. How would you feel if you had depression, which is bad enough, but now suddenly had to be fired from your job. You now have no qualifications to get another job that meets a similar salary to cover your mortgage, bills, car loan etc. Now you have to sell your house and car…
You can see it’s not as easy as just ‘not flying’. What really needs to happen is the FAA allowing pilots to receive the treatment they need while being able to fly as long as they do not pose a danger to others or themselves. If that was the case, this man would have never taken the mushrooms that caused this incident
That just encourages lying, which leads to things like this.

I’ve taken shrooms once before. It was one of the best feelings ever, one of those feelings you just want to love everyone and make everyone have a happy day. But it can also change your way of thinking not uncontrollably but more like if you were drunk and couldn’t really control yourself 100%.. you just have to remain as happy and calm as possible don’t let the negatives try to ruin it cause you can start saying negative stuff and reacting negatively. Don’t think this is like a zombie control drug it’s not that serious but it’s serious enough to not play with it
Mario takes mushrooms to become super powerful to save the world but someone takes them and goes nuts.
😊 Wait a minute.. he took mushrooms and he drank alcohol and he never had a chance to go to a therapist or talk to someone or his wife about his mental depression.
Then he takes the flight and he pulls the trigger and now he's the victim that is amazing story. He should not be allowed to fly a plane ever again unless he gets a note from the doctor. Now he's the victim interesting. He is reckless endangerment that's it .. this is a strategy played out by the lawyer or him He's playing games ..
Legalize them and END THE DRUG WAR
Him speaking out and showing his face is so so dumb. In such a position of responsibility it’s absolutely damning
For a qualified pilot to put his own license over the safety of passengers(and am talking about the times he flew in that mental state) is a disgrace on the career he was trying to protect but he doesn’t seem to have any remorse otherwise he wouldn’t be justifying
nah lock this guy up for life
He was afraid he wouldn’t be able to fly and…now he can’t. I can’t imagine the FAA allowing him in the left seat again, ever.
Why people have depression??? because they want to make things right, but the things that they want to make right is full of hindrances and challenges, "solution" focus on things that you want to make it right then step by step fixing it, don't think to fix it immediately.. patience, acceptance, and focus, one at a time..

The best use of magic mushrooms for depression is microdosing. The heroic dose helps but not in everyday life that's left best for a quiet, peaceful place. This guy is just irresponsible
This is the most weird, unvetted story. Dude, don’t take shrooms before piloting a plane - that simple.
Totally unaccapetable behavior. If he was that depressed, he should've called in a sick day. He should have his licence removed.

That’s like an instant lifetime ban on being a pilot, right? Right?
Let me guess without looking it up: pilots aren't allowed to consume substances that effect their faculties at least 24 hours before being in a plane. So this guy is conveniently saying that he took shrooms 48 hours before, and claiming that they still kicked in after 2 whole days.
Those mushrooms must have been magic for him to end up getting crazy reduced charges.
His action was worse than drunk driving. He should be prosecuted for attempted mass murder!
If you’re depressed get yourself in the gym and grind. Exercise cures depression.
It really does help with depression and overall, mental health. That and at least eating somewhat healthy (good fats and healthy carbs for me). I hardly workout but when I do, I see a change.
Spent my entire 20s being crippled by anxiety due to this logic.
Sometimes blaming yourself isn’t the way. Sometimes a doctor can get you on the right track.
Do not do that, exercise doesn't cure depression at all. Exercising eases depression, it doesn't cure it. Consulting a doctor to get Anti Depression meds will help. Do not spread misinformation.
shrooms also treat depression, not endorsing them, just stating something
He cares more about flying the plane than the lives of the people in it. He should have already decided he was unfit to fly if he was that depressed. Every flight before he went off duty was at risk as well.
He should be in prison 😡 selfish sad man tried to take others with him in his attempt to self-delete.
Do not blame psilocybin
It sucks that he is depressed and grieving, I genuinely feel for that, but once you try killing an entire plane full of people purposely you lose all sympathy.
Blame the mushrooms…..what about his mental health and alcohol? He’s looking for an excuse to explain his actions.
I've had shrooms countless times, never had the urge to hurt anyone. This is why you should experiment when YOU'RE YOUNG!!!! Lastly, what a poor decision on his part to think it would be remotely okay to be on drugs whilst in the cockpit even though he wasn't flying the aircraft.
