- Hey there fellow travelers and Elvis fans! Welcome to Memphis! Whether you are heading out to Mud Island for a concert, visiting the Pandas at the zoo, taking in great blues music on Beale Street or visiting the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis has so much to do, but also a few things not to do. And so today we have what not to do in Memphis. Though it is mostly what you need to do in Memphis as a tourist.

Don’t get lost and wind up in the wrong parts of town!
The "wrong" part of town can be right across the street or a block away from the "right" part of town in Memphis. Act accordingly!
The entire Memphis is the wrong part. What are talking about? Collierville not even safe anymore people shooting up grocery stores.

The Memphis Zoo is seriously one of the best...and I've visited the San Diego Zoo.
I grew up in midtown Memphis 5 blocks from the zoo. It was so cool to occasionally hear the lions roaring in the distance. 🦁

There are some rather aggressive beggers in Memphis, so just be cautious. Decided to hit the town on my first night there, and within less than one block, I had my first encounter. The man casually asked for money, but when I said no, he proceeded get in front of me and scream in my face. This is NOT a reflection of the whole town, but rather a bad and unlucky first-impression. Don't let something like that scare you too much from hitting Beal St. Just be aware and bring SOME form of self-protection just in case.
Most of the crime in Memphis is by people who know one another. I'm from "across the bridge" but lived in Memphis and I know my city. Stay away from Family Dollars, Dollar Trees, and gas stations with thugs hanging out in front. Just go wherever you're going and act like you know. Don't stare at folks and don't pause at green lights. I live in North Carolina now, but Memphis will always be my city.

i know what you mean .i was born and raised in memphis ..lived there for 59 yrs till we moved to MS 4 yrs..to the quiet country !! i dont miss city life AT ALL !! MEMPHIS IS RANKED ONE MOST CRIME RIDDEN IN COUNTRY !!

If you do need to book a hotel when they are filled up inside of Memphis go to one of the Casinos in Tunica Mississippi it's only 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic and the rates are low because they want you to gamble.
Ironic last time to Memphis I stayed in tunica it was an easy drive to memphis
Nice hotels in Arkansas also. 5 minutes from downtown.

Southaven MS has great hotels as well. They are off the expressways and closer to downtown and these hotels are surrounded by a great shopping area.
The Stax Museum and Sun Records are a must if you are a music fan.There is also a great classic car museum across the street from Sun.
So Graceland isn't a must ???

Dad and I were in Memphis for my birthday a couple weeks ago. Absolutely loved it! Beale street, sun records, stax, Graceland, rock n soul museum, loved it all. So much blues joints every night, a friend of mine lives in Memphis and joined us for dinner, watched him gig, was so much fun! And had wiseacre tiny bombs. SO good! Can’t wait to go back

You nailed Memphis! Any city can be dangerous. Don't get drunk walk around any downtown with money falling out of your pocket and cry about getting robbed. Smart travelers don't have these problems and that is who he is speaking to. Great video for my city!
Any city can be dangerous, but Memphis is a crime ridden shithole. People who visit there deserve whatever they get.

@@courtneycoley8487 Crime in Memphis should not be underestimated. It is consistently regarded as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States.
People think that just because they are still in the US, that it makes Memphis a safe city to visit.
There is a major statistical difference in violent crime between Memphis and many comparable sized cities around the world.
Example: The last time I visited Memphis, my friend's landlord had his truck stolen from the parking lot while he was visiting another tenant to check up on something.

This year I am pretty sure we are breaking all the violent crime records we have. And we broke them all last year too. Huge uptick. Every single day i see a different Gas station police taped off. We just had a mass shooting at a Kroger in Collierville. Don't underestimate the crime for real.

I live just south of Memphis and do deliveries in every part of Memphis 6 days a week. It has it's good and bad areas. Just be aware of your surroundings.

It's a commonality that we all have to deal with, locals and tourists alike! Memphis in May is a month long event where every weekend has a special event, one weekend is the Music Fest, one is the BBQ Competition. Plan to come on which weekend interests you!

I would love to visit Memphis from Germany as I am a big Elvis fan but I am extremely scared ngl I am not used to any of this and America definitely seems very dangerous and scary but seeing Graceland is my lifelong dream❤️
I think the civil rights museum is something everyone should experience at least once. Highly impactful! You're right about Graceland, it's huge. We were so tired when we walked the house and all the museum rooms we didn't have the energy to see his airplane

The Fire Museum on Union Ave is a must for kids and adults alike!! Amazing flash over room simulates a real house fire. The Ornamental Metal Museum is a great hands on museum that has a wonderful gazebo over looking the river, perfect for a picnic!
I lived near Memphis for about 3 years and I want to warn everyone that Memphis does have a crime problem. Some suggest that it’s limited to bad areas but that’s not always the case.
If you plan a trip to Memphis, stick to the destinations that you have researched and don’t wander around.
Tourists locations are safe

@@dmellngr Beale is for the locals but tourists are welcome and Graceland is in one of the worst areas but nothing ever happen on that block because no locals ever go there only tourist and I know I lived behind dodge's chicken for 6 years which is legit 3min away from Graceland

The Bass Pro Shop is actually very cool. I live an hour away and really strolling about the place.
@@lkelley861 I hear ya. I said the same thing about the Mall of America - “just not my thing” - but while in Minneapolis on business my local business hosts took me there for beers and burgers. We walked around and I really enjoyed the evening!

@@knight-ue6tfDude what? The MPD always has some massive summertime operation. It’s the push for Black education and Black excellence that has really pushed Memphis to trying to get over its polarizing criminal image. If we could get an increase in MPD officers pay, that would help as well.
I used to go to events at the Pyramid when it was a stadium, many Tigers basketball games, LARP events, and monster truck shows I went to. So it really hits me in the Capitalistic Dystopian feels when I see it as a hallowed out Bass Pro Shop now.
Gambling in West Memphis 5 minutes away and Tunica 30-40 minutes away.

+1 for the Cole slaw on the BBQ. I’m a Yankee, lived around Memphis for nearly 20 years, and that’s one thing I got converted on. I can’t have BBQ now without Cole slaw.

My sister used to live there years ago. My mom and I came over to visit her one evening. My car was stolen within 15 minutes of being there 😩!
In my younger years I was one of those people that lived for the nightlife on Beale St., if I wasn't at 152's I'd be standing around people watching. But now that I'm older I actually appreciate Beale more in the day time with a nice crowd a little more.

I work in downtown Memphis, my employer recommends we all have our sidearms on our person as we work due to the crime. It has got better in the last few years, but we still have the need. Work has me traveling all the time but as far as Gus's and Central BBQ, those are my personal favorite chicken and BBQ places in the country. Can't go wrong stopping by there. The lines are long for a reason.

I think the best Time To Visit Memphis is Actually in September, 13:48 Temperatures Start falling And they Can Ride Rides at the Fair And it's Some Festivals too, But May Cool Also 😎👍
Spring time is beautiful there. If you time it right, with all the spring flowers in bloom it can be just glorious. Memphis is geographically far enough north and far enough south that a lot of really beautiful things bloom there in April.
On the other hand, September can still be brutal here.

For the full experience, walk a few miles of Brooks road. The "Tunica" casinos people talk about are not in the Town of Tunica itself which is 10 miles further south. They are in Robinsonville, MS. Just as in Memphis, keep ur guard up.
I live in the suburbs if memphis (germantown and now Bartlett) lived her my whole 40 years, born and raised. There's no one area that's a "bad" part of town.....it is EVERYWHERE
IDK, I drive through midtown every night on Madison street to the Dairy for last 6 years. there has been a huge change since the gentrification this year and new apartments built. Bars are full of well to do yuppies and they are walking unharmed up and down the street at midnight.

Been 2x , for my 50th & 60th birthdays & loved it. 70 is in a few months but my buds dont want to go again. We went on the paddlewheeler on the river. I highly recommend it
Lived there growing up. I now live in Pensacola with white beautiful beaches and air is so clean. However, I will always cherish going to dyers with my dad. The old dyers not the one on Beale. I miss you dad! Wish you were still alive in your downtown apartment. Love you memphians
That was very informative thank you.. I'm also looking for some other must-see things in Memphis this March. And I'd also like to know what areas of Memphis are too dangerous to walk around in
National St (JUST DONT DO IT), Airways Blvd, That block beyond Beale St (JUST DONT DO IT!), Elvis Presley Blvd, basically all of South Memphis. Better just stick to Beale St. and other tourist spots. What’s funny is I used to cut schools all across those locations, but as much as it wasn’t permitted for me to do so, I kept the strap. You’ll never catch me slippin.
I walked from Sun studio to Stacks and then downtown. Broad daylight. No one bothered me but a lot of people looked at me like I was really lost and stupid

Memphis born and raised. I lived in Colorado for a year, but at 4:16, WAAAAAAAY in the background you can see the neighborhood I live in LOL. Yeah, I thank you for your travel channel. A lot of the other ones didn’t seem very engaging, and I lacked the proper appreciation for the activities there are to do down here. Keep on keepin on, and it’s very, different, to have our city showcased for something positive besides JUST BBQ and Elvis.
As a long time native Memphian, just letting you know. Memphis is definitely a great place to visit (yes, definitely be careful though). But as a place to live... DON'T! Or at least don't live in the city itself. The city is dealing with not just a high crime rate. But also a high poverty rate that is getting worse, which itself is making the crime rate even worse. And lastly, a corrupt city government. Memphis's net migration rate is continuing to go downhill.
Most of the businesses are corrupt like CMI health ,landlords , apartment managements etc.
I moved from DeSoto county, MS to Memphis, which is the opposite flow of white flight. I actually find that I love living in Memphis. I’m two minutes away from great restaurants, good stores, etc. Different strokes for different folks!

Born and raised memphian here, and I've been fortunate enough not to experience crime. It really does depend on where you go and who's there.
You will be even more fortunate if you make it out alive and move to Canada or Europe

Especially if you’re used to America, a lot of Americans think they can handle the differences in culture and way of life, most are wrong. Not saying Memphis is the best or even comparable, but make sure you don’t discount a place just because of a reputation.
That being said, that Interstate when it’s time for everyone to go to work at FedEx is a different type of dangerous. I got hit by 2 different 18 wheelers seconds apart from each other. Uninjured, Ya know when I just comment on my life, it’s actually been a little more eventful than I previously thought.
Don't Forget To Explore Memphis Food Culture! One of the best food cities I have ever been too by far

Had some locals tell me that if I come across an aggressive panhandler to just give them a counterfeit 10 or 20 dollar bill. Gets rid of them real quick. Don't think I'll risk going to jail, however.

I work downtown, when you don't give them money some of them get pissed and start acting violent. I've had to show my sidearm more times that I care to remember. But it works every time.
I watch your videos for planning trips, and I’m so glad you came to my city! We have Elvis and the best music & food in the country - what else could ya want?! As anywhere, use your head and you’ll have a great time. The great thing about Memphis is that the people who live here love living here and really don’t care what the haters and doomsayers have to say about it (btw, Nashville’s crime rates are the same as Memphis’). It’s a cool place to be with its own distinct personality, groove, and culture. Come ready to have a good time. It’s not sophisticated, it’s feel good. 👍🏼
No mam, there are a lot of cities in the country with great music and food. What else could you want? Something much better, a low crime rate, clean environment, entertainment, scenery, good schools; something that Memphis doesn't have. And finally, the best thing about Memphis is leaving

@@kaydod3190No he’s going through the same thing I did years ago. EVERYONE usually hates the city they are from, familiarity breeds contempt. It was amplified in my case because I am an author. Authors ALWAYS hate their city of origin when they’re young.
@@kaydod3190I understand you, I’ve been through a renaissance in my life where, understanding, is ALWAYS the answer. The mishandling of the educational system is the main catalyst for why Memphis is in the shape it’s in. I’m from here and I’ve always found that was the key difference between me and my other friends. I value education, perspective, and knowledge like it’s pure gold. I feel if the parents and schools would put forth a concerted effort this city could turn around. Oh and we need another Uber famous person born within the last 30 years to attract attention here again, that’s where I come in. If you ain’t heard about me yet, oh, you will.

3:16 First time I've ever heard anyone describe hustlers and panhandlers as "pretty fun and cool." 😂 I know his job is to promote travel and tourism so he doesn't want to say anything to put potential visitors off but that had me chuckling.
I still remember a night back in the late 90s when I was walking near Beale and some guy who'd obviously mistaken me for a tourist tried to sell me one of the 20 or so copies of the (free) Memphis Flyer he was carrying around, "to raise money for the children."

I know every homeless person in Memphis, I used to work all near downtown and worked at the Parking Garage outside of Rendezvous Restaurant in 2011, so they can try me if they want.
The Memphis Zoo is the best!!! They even have a small, kid friendly, water park that just opened this summer.

I went to Memphis the week of Thanksgiving 2016. The city is surprisingly very clean and really good food, but just in my experience had a bad vibe I felt as if I needed eyes in the back of my head, and I have been to NOLA 4 times I never felt that. The Vagrancy is no joke. The vagrants KNOW who is a tourist, and they will stalk you and pester for money. It happened to me twice in a 4 days trip. It happened to my husband also. I had the same vagrant followed me for a day until I just give up a dollar , in which I didnt instead went off screamed at him in the middle of Beale street . following me I know you have a dollar.
One early morning I was walking downtown with husband and we hear a lady screaming help me, and about a block ahead was a woman in a wheelchair. The closer we approached I noticed she was naked, so I told me hubby to stay back while I helped her get her purse and belongings scattered on the sidewalk. She explained she was robbed and took the little money she had. I found her shawl that was covering her up and placed it back on her thought it was drenched in urine smell.. she asked for money but I feared she be robbed again in her condition by 12. I noticed her arm was limp and had apparent gangrene, so I opted to call her an ambulance. She put up a fight. Should I call the cops? she insisted the cops made her arm that way cause they broke it yesterday. I know that wasn't true, and politely said so.. All she had me do was wheel her into the sun .. I never forget. I say it had great ribs, and nice looking city with an awesome pro bait shop shaped like a pyramid .. but the vibe and vagrancy will never bring me back.

Oh yeah, Downtown Memphis ain’t no joke with the homeless, still nothing compared to how many homeless live in Nashville, I tell them to screw off because of my old job, I knew all of the homeless from the places near downtown I’d stop at, they knew not to mess with me.
You unfortunately get that from the poorer cities. Memphis PD is having a staffing problem because surrounding areas pay their officers more, thus they see no benefit in staying here. It’s a problem they’re trying to address, but it’s more difficult because the bit of fame we have is from Elvis and that’s pretty much all but worn off except to the older crowd, thus there’s little tourist draw, thus little tourist revenue, thus not enough money to pay officers to stay here, thus crime never decreases.

At some restaurants in Memphis, the Spaghetti counts as a vegetable. Sorry, but it gets HOT in May not June. There's a Casino in West Memphis, Arkansas, five minutes away from Memphis and several casinos and hotelsin Tunica,MS about thirty minutes away from Memphis.
AND the weather is usually rainy and horrible in May as attested to by most mud covered festival goers.
If in Tunica, go to Fitzgerald's. Rooms are more affordable overall, fun atmosphere, especially on Thursday through Saturday, lots of nice promotions for players club card holders, even if you're a newbie. Buffet is OK, but the Buffet and steakhouse at Gold Strike are 5🌟++
Take a horse-and-carriage ride, right when you get to Downtown. We tell you where to eat, where not to, etc. We generally do historic tours thru old parks. :)
Hello I love your videos. I am a from Memphis. You are so right about central and gibsons but also try the bbq spaghetti at corkys. Also the Peabody has an amazing pastry chef. Get a drink and chocolate duck at the bar after watching the ducks. The crime is real be careful when driving abs leaving stuff in cars and get off Beale street by midnight.

@@ceylonmooney My point was it's way out on Walnut Grove, with all that traffic nonsense, not near Downtown or Graceland, or the Zoo. They would either have to have a car to get there or a reason to go there. The Botanical Gardens or Dixon Art Gallery would be closer to Downtown and more appealing to tourists.

Hit up some funk in mid-town. The Overton Square is great and right down Cooper is Cooper/Young. Lots of great bars, restaurants, shops.
Just went this summer and had a great time. Amazing food on Beale St. On a trip a few years ago went to the barbecue festival. That was a little disappointing to find out you can’t go and get barbecue.
A chain BBQ restaurant in Memphis, that even beat the single outlets to me, was the Corky’s in Collierville and don’t forget Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken.

@@kaydod3190 Didn't say it wasn't good, but its better in the least suspecting places. The best BBQ comes from places that don't have wait staff. Most of the best BBQ places I have seen had 1 side, and that was a bag of potato chips. City BBQ is made in larger batches and kept longer before serving. The flavor is hidden by sauces and rubs.
My boss's dad was good friends with Elvis he was deployed with him and that friend ship continued after the war he would routinely visit him at his home before his death he said he was very nice person. Also dyers burgers are amazing

I went to it as well, the shrimp looked rotted & I never send back food but I’ll never forget this place since it’s the only place I ever sent back the food & left … I felt bad for the servers I know it’s not their fault but whoever was in the kitchen to serve that needs their eyes checked
Another don't to Memphis is if the ground is rumbling think about delaying your trip, it's very close to the New Madrid earthquake fault, in 1811/1812 this area registered an 8.2 earthquake with many more still in the 7's. It's said by Geologist to be very overdue.

I didn't know that people DIDN'T put coleslaw on their pork barbeque. I always have. We used to have a barbeque place here for years (northern VA), but The Dixie Pig closed down. I didn't go there enough when it was open. I guess I thought it would always be there. Is the barbeque in Memphis typically shredded or sliced? Lewis Grizzard always recommended sliced.
It’s shredded at most places but I think Cozy Corner slices meat for their sandwiches.
Yes we do in Memphis definitely our pork sandwiches slaw and bologna sandwiches slaw with everything.
the best bbq is in biggersville ms about6 miles south of corinth on 45 hwy at KENNYS BBQ next to the school house i grew up in mphs in 50-60s and eat bbq all over mphs but kennys has'em beat in my opinion
If you come to Memphis try Top's BBQ they have the best pork sandwiches reasonably priced 70 yrs says it all !
I came to Memphis with a group to visit the original St. Jude's Research Hospital to see where it all began. Danny Thomas's memorial is there, which was really cool! Best hospital I ever visited! That was our main attraction. So, I guess if you want to visit them...ask?

I have been to Memphis once -- Memphis has November 6th Street; we saw the street sign and had to know what story was (almost) no one known so asked the concierge at the Peabody and was told the street was name honor of November 6, 1934, the "day the city's residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of receiving public power."

I was stationed Millington Naval Air Station in spring of 1978 - And got trashed at Yosemite Sam's and ended up in the clink for a nite that Sunday Morning with a Nasty Hangover I walked from Memphis City Jail north thru some tough communities and was so broke I didn't have bus fare but after I guess 6 miles somebody recognized the short hair and figured where I was Headed to and gave me a ride Naval Schools have strict regs so I was lucky it was a saturday nite and my command didn't hear about it I personally thanked the Cops on my way out Now after watching the First 48 Memphis is as deadly as Baltimore my home I no longer roam like I used to Frederick Maryland 2003- 2010 has this type of gig on Market Street 6 Bars w/ Music all nite I used to sit outside with 2 half pints hidden in mulsch and nip if one got pour out I'd have back-up Played along w/ Harmonica
Downtown Memphis is great, but don't sleep on Midtown! Overton Square near the Memphis zoo is a great spot for food and nightlife as well. Overall, Memphis is not a place that you want to spend your life. Crime is a major issue which has likely been the reason the city's growth has remained stagnant for decades.
Downtown infrastructure is terrible. It’s stuck in the 1960s. Sad.
My Mum and I visited in 2014, for her 50th (complete Elvis fan), I found Beale Street to be clean and the locals to be very welcoming. Talked to the Memphis Flippers CEO, became friends with the police, and kept our wits about us. We were warned by locals not to go near white haven and not to go down certain side streets. We walked around a lot, especially down Main Street. I felt safer in Memphis than I did in New York. And we stayed out until all hours of the morning down Beale Street. The police presence helped make us feel safe. We shopped at Sears for hours and never felt unsafe. The only place I felt slightly unsafe in was up from Graceland along that main road. I tried telling Mum we should check out the Elvis stand-alone store on the other side of the highway and we started walking until she got freaked out and wanted to turn around. I’m from Australia and still think we will go back for Mums 60th. We did get laughed at by the locals when we said we went to the bus station to get a bus and we’re strictly warned to never do that again (we stood out like sore thumbs) and were even told by a local they’d give us their car keys before we ever did that again - we visited the Peabody and seeing the ducks was so cool and stayed in The Hampton Inn and a few other spots and the level of care and friendliness from the staff in hotels was astounding. We did have one of the hotel workers escort us across the street just to go to the convenience store and I guess that’s when it set in that we can’t be out at night. But all in all I really fell in love with the place and the people. There’s good and bad every where, just like here in Australia, lots of knife crime and gangs etc, but I still feel safe because I know the spots to avoid etc. Also, Don’t expect your ribs to be hot LOL the first place we went to I was dying to try the ribs the chips and ribs came out stone cold haha! Compared to Bourbon Street, I honestly felt safer in Beale Street. The worst thing we heard/experienced in Memphis was a woman jumped from the Peabody and landed on a horse (horse and carriage) and didn’t pass away, horse had to be put to sleep. And a random bird befriended me and landed in my hair on my last day in Memphis 😂 down Main Street. I gave it to a homeless man 😅 the people here make the place worthwhile to come to! We went from experiencing southern hospitality to hell on earth treatment in New York!

If u go to Beale st on a Friday or Saturday night, park close as u can in well light areas, like around the Orpheum, & make sure u leave Beale around 12ish, bcuz after 1am, that's when the rats start to acting a dam fool

We visited Memphis a few years back and had a spare afternoon, we were told to try the zoo, and for $10 each, it was the one of the best zoos I've been to. Memphis has some really good attractions, however, I never really felt safe outside of any tourist areas.
I live in Jonesboro, AR (65 miles from Memphis) and am from Memphis. The further you drive away from the bridge you safer you will be.

Memphis tends to always be on US dangerous cities lists.
As a Native Memphian, I'm going to tell you that you are absolutely right about your assessment of the Bluff City. Also, if you are an out of towner, be VERY VERY CAREFUL! The crime is crazy.
As far as tipping, yes, be generous. A lot of Memphians don't make very much. A lot of the locals are poor, work as waiters and depend on the tips Most locals KNOW it is a tourist city and being stiffed does NOT sit well with the local people.
As far as what BBQ joint is better... LOL, that's up for debate. I used to prefer Showboat Barbeque out in the suburbs but it is out of business now. I actually never ate at the famous Rendesvous until I revisited Memphis on vacation, as one who now lives in Atlanta!
And yeah, don't look like you have ANYTHING of value to the pick-pockets. I was advised this just walking home from school as a kid. I can't imagine what a tourist would experience.
Also, if you want a kick-ass burger, go to one of the many Huey's locations around the Memphis area. You'll never want a different type of burger again! I live in Atlanta now and no one can touch the level of flavor as a Huey's burger can! It is very juicy and flavorful. Huey's also has a lot of the local Memphis microbrews on tap.
And, although it is not mentioned here, if you want GOOD "upscale" Mexican food, check out Salsa Mexican Cantina in East Memphis on Poplar Avenue. I ate there a lot in my youth and whatever the spicy red powder is they sprinkle on their tacos and chips and salsa is awesome. I was told they serve "Sonoran" Mexican food after talks with the owners, but regardless, it is AWESOME!
