  • It's been almost a year since I bought this beat old Dodge 4x4 truck and started this project. Yeah... I know. Let's just say things haven't quite gone to plan. Let's check in on this nightmarish project and see what's what.

Cool truck, swap the cab, break down the engine, and hack the bed to look right, while doing worky work that pays money, and a full life with friends, family, children, and most important your wonderful spouse. Thanks for the sharing your labor of love with us.

Never seen that model before..i had a D200 in the same colour.. mine had 8 lug. It was a camper special. Mine had a ivory white roof. I went to home depot paint department and they computer matched the colour with some exterior house gloss paint. Worked good and cheap. 17 split rims were changed with 16' 8 spoke. Ready to find tyres.

My grandfather had a 64 2WD pickup as a farm truck. It got passed down to our family when most of its utility had been extracted. I still have a scar on the back of my hand from the ring gear of the flywheel I got while helping my dad work on it.

My buddy bought a sweet all original 79 warlock II from Oregon state, no rust at all surprisingly the original paint still shines. Very low miles, apparently bought new by an old woman who I guess wasn’t old when she bought it, but anyways only drove it when she needed it. Just a dream truck, absolute time capsule!

Whenever I encounter something like this, I break out my power washer and buzz everything as much as possible. It cuts down on the amount of rust you inevitably eat when wrenching. After everything dries out I start lubing everything as much as possible. Eventually it all gets done, it just depends on your resolve. Nice truck!

Has to be restored, doesn't have to be fully restored with fresh paint and new upholstery just rot free and running good. We need more trucks around like this one so in 20 years when all of the brand new ones being sold today are already being crushed and recycled we have something to drive.

Good to know! I really need early (61-66?) wiper linkage, pivots, arms, motor, both early door latches, and I think a passenger side fridge style door handle. I am planning to use my white cab for an upcoming project, but it was pretty well picked over before I got it.

That cab looks exactly the same as my dearly departed 1962 D200 stepside (318 poly, 4-speed, 4.11 gears, etc). I think I was the 3rd or 4th owner, bought it when I lived in Oregon in 1979. Donated it to charity in 1998, now I'm sick that I didn't have room to hang on to it, I really loved that old truck and would restore it today in a heartbeat. If I had to choose between the poor old worn out beat up D200 or my cherry low-mileage (30k) '98 Ram 1500, it would be a tough choice.

That truck is cool! Even with all its rust and issues, it’s In much better shape than any sweptline here in Pennsylvania. I know a guy who has several sitting in the woods behind his garage that the bedsides rotted off. They all look like flatbeds, with the bedsides laying on the ground on each side.

In my opinion that Dodge body style is one of the best looking (I know 65 was the last year but not exactly sure what the first year was). If that was my truck the first thing I would do is strip it down to the frame and paint a coat of Chassis Saver on it. I would bore that 318 0.30, keep the cab, fenders and hood the same color (I really like that turquoise) and try to find an original fleetside bed for it. Lastly run dual exhaust with Cherry Bomb mufflers

My last poly was in a 63 Fury mordor that sat for a few decades in TN. I bought it about 7 years ago as a parts car and still have the plate, last registered in the year of the state's bicentennial, 1996. I don't know why the car was parked because after freeing the carb linkage and tossing in a new coil, it fired right up. It sat for so long the 2bbl air cleaner lid rotted through, it now hangs in my shop.

If I find the pics to my 68,69,71 power wagon I will send it to ya. 361 big block short box 4x4 did a body lift and put a hp 383 in it. Oh and it was a 4sp. Pitched the step side for the swept line box. 33" tires on steel 5 spoke rims. Green cab, blue hood, orange box and the 71 grill. The orange box came off a utility company truck. It was so ugly it was cute. I traded a perfectly good 440 numbers 69 charger for it. What a epic mistake. I sold the 383 to a guy and the roller to another and it was never seen again, and I am good with that. No one wants to be reminded of being stupid. I hope you make it run and get the correct box cuz it will be cool. Oh and that grain truck I got the poly 2x4s off was the same cab. Just on a 2 ton with a dump box. Loved the stand up hood too.😂 and remember we do stupid things when we are young. Hint hint😂

I just love the Poly. Which is funny, because I’ve never had one that ran right. I had one that smoked like a bastard, and one that pinged like crazy in one cylinder. Then this well used, disintegrating pile. But I’ve always found them to be endearing. Ah, and I will never forget the time I pulled up next to my friend Conor’s Poly powered Coronet (with a 4 barrel carb, but otherwise bone stock) in my somewhat built 383 powered Charger getting up to highway speed. Foot to the floor, we stayed neck and neck, and I could not pull away from him… that was an important lesson.

All that when all you really needed was a longer breaker bar and a few cans of PB... and maybe the one piston... ya. HA!
Fun isn't it... BTDT "I was thumbin' through the want-ads in the Shelby County Tribune when this classified advertisement caught my eye..."
    Fun hanging out as always.

Is that one ano army veteran? I had one the same color, and one day, I opened the glove box door, and it had a brass Id plate attached to the door. Mine was actually an Airforce veteran. Once a year the military would auction off surplus trucks and car lot owners would buy them and throw a quick and dirty paint job on them and flip them. These were the strongest old trucks. Mechanically, they would hold up to about anything. Body wise? Not so much!

Definitely not a military truck - but that’s cool!

Yep my 200 the same. Had to lift the door to close it. Two handed job. Lol. Leave it as is. Put the metal bed back on remove weight from it. Find a big ugly fifty dollar slide in camper . Bolt that down good. Head out into the bush for some overnight camping. Clean the patena. Tek screw some floors in. Summer will be over in three weeks. 😂😂..Better start pulling some rabbits out your Axx. 😂. Thanks for video. Have a good week..

      @DeadDodgeGarage  Před 5 měsíci +2

I don’t need the extra axle in the back, but you’ve got me with the rest of it - and a whole bunch of other people would agree I’m sure. My “dream truck” is a little more mundane - a crew cab 70s truck with a Cummins under the hood would do it.

0:09 That is funny. That Washington plate looks like the Mexico plates from the late '80's. They were green letters with a white background and in my state we had the TJ***** series. Of course it said SIN MEX on ours.

Cummin's 6BT or put the cab and box on a newer frame of a 2500 4x4 reg cab long bed with the cummin's. The look's is what are most after and the rest is just undesirable with it's rough ride and crap suspension geometry!

Just swap in a running poly from something else. We picked up a 64 Polara for 300 bucks with a good running poly. Then you can drive it plus you get another turd to have in the yard, so you win twice!
