  • City guards are a trope of D&D, because they intesect the actions of your players on many levels. I'll show you how to think about examples from the real world to invest your RPG guards with realism.

in many medieval German towns/cities, the guard was provided by the guilds, either junior guild members having to do their due service or hiring mercenaries. That could add an extra level of complexity for dealing with the city guard

Again, referring to the railroading I do with my Hibernia campaign setting, the players are members of the local lord's retinue, which means the player characters have a couple of minor adventures where THEY are the city guards.
One is when Simon the Pie Man is attacked by rats, while carving meat off a dead horse, (leading to a wererat), and another where they stand guard over night at one of the guard towers, (and someone is trying to sneak into town.)

I feel like it's not railroading if the players are given a choice not to join in. Most players would be fine with being the noble's guards: it gives them opportunities for adventures. But, maybe they want to do something else?

@@DDHomebrew Well I planned the setting for players of all skill levels, but especially new players. They can learn their races, classes and subclasses and work as a team. I would like to think I am giving them enough leeway to start a new character, if they do not care for their original choices.
My setting is a semi-historical setting, but Paladins were in Frankia, not Hibernia. How do you integrate Dragon Born on an Island where all the reptiles have been banished? Monks??? Vikings.., I mean Barbarians.
Once they hit level 5, their obligation to the local lord has probably been met and the sandbox is open. The party begins with a town they can use as their home base, and still have the rest of the island to explore.

@@neutronjack7399 I think this a great idea now that I see it fleshed out. As an old sandboxer, I'm always hyper on letting players do what they want.

I love your style. I was entertained the whole time, and I’ve taken away some exciting additions for my citystate. Interfaction tensions could include rival police forces in separate districts.

I my becmi campaign I oriented myself on a PC game called 'Battle Brothers'. Hamlets and Villages only have 'militias' with poor equipment and lower stats as defense. Small Towns have organized guards in uniform and Large Cities have both guards and military presence.

    • @DDHomebrew

This makes sense: the smaller the settlement, the less money and manpower to organize guards or militia. And the less sophisticated the training.

Limited authority, chip on their shoulder = trouble.

Village, town, or city guard all be multi class rogue/fighter with flanking sneak attack to club another in a group hustle across the neck/back upper shoulders or head.
So as a CR2 they have +1atk with a dmg 2d6 during flank for knock out effect.
Since as rogues they have the skill Gather Information for gossip news within the area they live or from passing travelers.
Never forget a town guard could feed adventures with Wrong info just to stand back and watch/listen to the wild goose chase they sent the PCs on.
Such as a giant monster with chicken feet stealing goats on the west side of town two miles into the farmland tree hedge. There are no chicken foot monsters, the town knows it, the farmers knows it. The tracks are made by the locals to get hunters to come through to sell traveling goods too.

I like the idea of guards giving out false or fantastical information to mess with people. The classic tall tale syndrome that is common to smaller communities especially. There's not much around for entertainment!
