i’m so sorry people are discrediting this genuine advice bc they think it’s a prank lol. art is literally like any career path, it just might not be the thing you need to pursue as a livelihood even if you enjoy it. that doesnt mean being an artist is pointless, and you can even still make money on the side if you want, but committing to *anything* full-time is a very important decision to make for yourself.

Man I've spoken to so many people who were considering quitting art and I always say do what makes you happy! If art no longer makes you happy then don't do it. If you wanna draw for fun and not pursue a career then just don't. Art is supposed to be a fun and happy thing so if you aren't happy then it defeats the point.

I adore drawing and I've been doing it since I was a kid. In 12th grade I took AP Art and realized I could never create on a schedule. Everyone in my class was creating their portfolio for art school, but I decided to go to college for history. Illustrating is just something I do for me. It helps me process the world/my emotions. Oof, I hear ya! That used to be me before college. I’m currently doing an animation program and it has helped me be more consistent with my personal art and has definitely forced me to practice. I think doing more makes you want to do more... if that makes any sense.
Maybe setting goals/mini projects for yourself could help and practice completing them by a certain deadline. For example, complete a full drawing with colour once a week (or any length of time that works for you). Then increase the frequency once you’ve done it consistently for a while. It’s much easier to draw frequently once you make it a habit. Hopefully this helped?

when junior year of high school hit, I had no idea what I even wanted to do in college. I had started drawing a lot for fun and thought it would just stay that way because I (and a lot of other art kids in my grade) was told most of our lives that "art isn't a career" and that I should major in something math or science related since my grades were so good. Yeah I like learning science topics but I think I would've lived the rest of my life in regret if I had to work in a lab or be doing research as a career. I would've been stable but miserable.

Although something that might help is just sort of checking in with yourself and asking if you're hesitant about art because you genuinely don't think you want to, or if you're actually worried about going into the field because you're feel like you're not good enough at it and its based on anxiety, since I used to think I didn't want to do it, but I realized over time I was just scared I wouldn't be good enough. As a professional in the VFX field, I couldn't have said it better myself. This lifestyle is not for everyone. Moving around constantly, having to make new friends every time you move to a new country/city, extremely long workweeks during crunch (80+hrs/week). These things are all important to consider when making career choices. Sometimes I wish I could slow down, or have doubts about my future but I do love the experiences that working in this field has given me and I will continue on until I can't anymore, then I will likely end up switching to a more stable industry that I can still apply my skills to and keep art and drawing as a hobby

I’m soon to be in my 30s, and know many professionals who are in traditional white collar jobs. Other careers are far more stabler but they don’t have the project like flexibility that art has; it really depends on your ability to hustle for new projects, market yourself, collaborate with other artists, etc., and how strong your purpose is on why you do art. Part of it is finding your audience, lifestyle and what percentage of your income you want from art. it’s very personal for everyone

Thinking about going back to illustration after 3 years haven't drawn anything. It seems like a lot of your fans think this is an April Fools video,
but this is honestly the best advice out there for young artists to hear.
I'm just starting my second studio job as a BG artist, and even as a newcomer, studios still expect you to draw whatever is needed for the project, regardless of if you have experience drawing it or not. It forces you to learn on the job, because if you throw in the towel and say you can't do it, they find someone else.
You can love drawing but this is a serious and competitive career. If you're not willing to study like hell and get out of your comfort zone, unfortunately you may not get hired.

Same, and also know more about how to find a job in the art feild..
I still do it for fun and every once in awhile I get commissioned.
You get screwed, ghosted, etc. So you create stricter and stricter guidelines. And it's hard to dedicate yourself fully to a art career path when you also need income. If we can survive on just my husband's income, he would let me focus on my work without hesitation. But we have a mortgage now and soon getting a vehicle.
So sadly...I had to admit to myself that art will be a passion and a hobby for me. Never a career, I'm stuck at a factory and I can't see myself going anywhere else that makes good pay and decent benefits. My body is crumbling, fighting with physical and mental health. But was better off than I was 5 years ago.
So yeah, if you can dedicate, discipline yourself and know people. Go for it, but it's not the end of the world if you can't find a career in the world of creation.. I had to convince myself that. Sometimes I still do. Just depends on you :)

@@math_rd I’m currently in college for animation and I get to listen to industry professionals chat and vent all the time. Sure, the pay isn’t out of this world but it’s decent. It depends what kind of lifestyle you want to live and what sacrifices you are willing to make. Also where you live plays a big factor in career choices. I got lucky that my interests matched with the jobs available in my area.
Passion is part of it but definitely not all of it. For some people, passion plays no part. Some animators just do their jobs and go home. They are good at what they do and they are using it to make money. It’s also the community and the creative opportunities. I don’t know what I would be doing if I wasn’t pursuing animation so I’m willing to go through all the ups and downs of the Industry. Sorry for the rant, I’ll stop myself now before this becomes a novel but yeah, not all art careers have the same pros and cons. It’s worth exploring different art careers, not all are freelance (which is a deal breaker for many people).

Something to consider about art being your career is that your leisure will become your labour - do you have some other creative outlet to fill the spot that art used to so that you can actually wind down? I think it’s very important for everyone to have a creative hobby, something that isn’t just consumption (gardening rather than watching tv for example)

I knew I wasn’t consistent with Art but loved it so much that I winded up not choosing it, but rather went for graphic design because I knew it’d improve me as a creative individual while making money and not sacrificing something I love most. I also am a great editor, so making ads for designs and whatnot became almost second-nature. Many people can make it as an artists but the one thing most forget is reality. You have to be consistent and draw so much to show off your level of knowledge, use different mediums, and so much more that I can’t bring myself to use it as a career

it might not be the best choice for you to pursue art as a CAREER. but here are some reasons why you should WORK towards progress on it:
-if you genuinely enjoy art, it can be something that will make you happy! maybe not as a full time career, but perhaps just a hobby.
-if you're in school, art can really help sometimes. I've gotten extra points for creativity in my projects before, which really helped me make up for technical points. additionally, knowledge in anatomy can also help in school.
-it can get you friends! people who can't draw for their life will see you as a god (don't get too self-absorbed though lol), and I've gained a friend before from them complimenting my art. skills will elevate your likeability.
-maybe don't make art a full time career, but more of a side hustle if you're young, have plenty of free time, and interested in money! the better your skills are, the more people are likely to pay for a commission!
if i come up with more reasons later, i'll add them.

After being in community college for 2 yrs studying art and planning on transferring soon, I feel like I am NOW starting to take art more seriously. I am still juggling of either being in the animation or illustration career and I feel like I am spirling since the transfer application due date is coming in 2 months. I want to do art as a career ever since I was a child, but I am not sure what exactly I really want to do....

I've been very passionate about art since i was 8. It started out as an outlet since i've dealt with a lot of trauma at that age. That soon blossomed into something where i wanted to help other and help them feel they way i do when i look at my works. now im very passionate and hope to do this as my career for a long long time :D

But anyway if you feel art is what you really want to do go for it !

Kinda in that period of my life where I really am confused about it. I means, art is literally the only thing where I kept being consistent in life both with learning and trying new teqniques, and I also know where exactly I want to go. But still, I am at my first job and I'm enjoying it yet is exhausting at the same time, so the fact I'm not used to the fatigue is probably confusing me?? My workaholism surely does not help, but the fact is... I see myself in no other place than art :x

I had so many dreams of being an artist and I finally had a shot at a tattoo apprenticeship.. but I have a 6 month old baby and I just wasn’t able to keep up with him AND being there most of the week until late at night. Between that and his appointments and the fact that I was making zero dollars to peruse this for an unknown amount of time, I just couldn’t do it all. I had so little family time, and it broke me. I had the career of my dreams right in front of me but I had to walk away and I still wonder if I made the right choice. I’ll probably never get that chance again. I want an art career so bad, but I just don’t think it will give me the stability and work-life balance I need with a child 😔 I feel selfish for still hoping I can make it work some day.

Probably because I'm still studying to get in college.
But I will probably keep drawing on the side and stuff. And should, in the future, a opportunity present itself, I would study it and make a decision. I mean, we are talking about the future here. Nothing is certain, and I find a little of hope in that, because it means that things can change.
Oh my god, I just did that "philosopher" thing
I should make a video about this
I didn't watch the video tho.... subtitles would be really apreciated.
