I flew on an ATR-72 from Florence to Rome in 2000, and I really liked this aircraft. It was quieter than I expected.
Agreed - it was certainly quieter than the Fokker 50 I just flew in earlier today :)
Great footage that we’ve now become accustomed to!
cheers Tim
Virgin Australia also have two a320s in WA
ah yes I forgot about those
Paul Stewart
Not sure they fly to Sydney but I think that Qantas send their a320s to Melbourne for servicing
would most likely use the jetstar a320 facilities in melbourne
I believe they have six A320s now.
www.planespotters.net/airline/Virgin-Australia-Regional
@@PaulStewartAviation The A320 flies the former Skywest routes in WA, for Virgin Australia Regional - formerly SkyWest.
Thanks for the queue jumping hack! That’s brilliant. Thanks for a great video Paul...
cheers
Really enjoyed this one Paul . Loved the intro from “Sheps “ ..
cheers David
Hello Paul! Great video. I loved how you did the voice over and gave us info about the ATR!
Cheers mate
They did well with Sheps Mound. Bruce was a heck of a nice guy. Missed.
Agreed - it's a great little spotting spot.
Great video Paul. Thanks for telling us about the small security path. It will save me heaps of time (not to mention my sanity).
you're welcome
Interesting and informative commentary by Paul as good video footage is shown of the flight in the ATR -72-600. Of particular interest and benefit is the snippet re the security queues. Well done again!
thanks for watching
Well priced airport food 😂😂😂😂😂 Thanks Paul, great video as always. I was driving past AeroPelican at Belmont this morning, stopped to watch a Beechcraft King Air wind up and take off......great stuff! 😀
cheers Mark
I’ve flown on the ATR and I loved it! Thanks for the upload!!
cheers my friend
Hi Paul, another great video like always! Love from England 🏴
Cheers Adam! Stay warm!
Paul Stewart thank you for replying!! You’ve made my whole year 🤩🤩
haha cheers for commenting!
Paul Stewart but honestly I love your videos and reviews. They make me happy and I’m 15 (different to my friends who always watch other vids) but these vids interest me and I love it when I get a pop up from you! 😁
Another great video Paul! Also some helpful tips about security at SYD as that terminali s often an utter mess!
cheers
That's a great tip on the downstairs security check in area.
Another enjoyable video Paul! Something different seeing your flying out of terminal 2 on a Virgin flight! And you certainly have the steadiest hand of any aviation youtuber!
cheers mate
Love flying the turbo props, flying at lower altitude makes for beautiful views!
Cheers Matthew, glad you enjoyed it.
That looked amazing. What a great view you had from your seat. Thanks for sharing
cheers Lewis
Excellent trip report Paul 👌 enjoyed it 😊
cheers mate
AWesome video Paul! again I'm loving the Gopro! Your footage is now soooo stable!
cheers. Yeah I'm very happy with it.
I love the little Dash 8's. I've never been on one of these and hopefully I get to.
I flew to Bali on Virgin last September with no problems at all. I flew back with Jetstar as I love the Dreamliner. Great video. My dad enjoys watching these also as he loves aeroplanes and worked with the airlines for 40 yrs.
cheers Luana :) I hope you saw my QantasLInk Dash 8 video :) And my Fokker 50 video will be out later this week or next week :)
Love the ATR...great aircraft...often deployed on the Canberra-Sydney leg and vice versa with VA !! Great spot to go to...spent many a holiday in Port Macquarie !! Thanks mate...great flight review as always and a belated Happy New Year !
cheers Craig, HNY to you too!
Very aahh well priced airport food, well done classic aviation sarcassim!
:D
Thanks Paul, what a great flight review and good advice!
cheers Dan!
Great video Paul! Always nice to catch an ATR, which aren’t a very popular aircraft some places. Service looks perfectly fine for the short flight!
Regards,
Brendan
Cheers brendan
great report video Paul
Cheers mate
Another great video Paul! I love all of these Aussie-based videos! It was interesting seeing the 737-700 and -800 together as the former really does look stubby! I wouldn't have even noticed it until you pointed it out! Now I'm always going to be checking if it's a 700 or 800 haha.
cheers mate
the atr-72 is my fav turbo prop plane
Hi Paul, if you haven't already done a video, a flight from Sydney to Coffs Harbour, and return
Great tip re security Paul 👍
cheers matt
What's the tip? I missed it
@@pastorofmuppets8834 watch again from 1.02
I'm only here for Paul's face. The rest of the clip is irrelevant and I don't bother watching. IQ is easily overridden by red head lust. Thanks for the time mark though!
@@pastorofmuppets8834 I may have replied incorrectly and apologies for that, way too many bots of late.
Thanks for reviewing a few Virgin flights as I know they’re not your 1st preference. Personally I prefer them and have never had a bad one yet albeit only domestically. Great informative video as usual. Cheers.
cheers Stephen. VA are a great airline although I usually fly QF because of the 'status handcuffs' and because their status is more useful overseas. But otherwise also never had a bad experience with VA.
Ah best seat in the house there Paul.
Yeh a good view of the engine but the view wasn't too obscured :)
Great video Paul
cheers mate
@@PaulStewartAviation thank you so much just uploading some videos can't wait to fly the A340 in April
Hi Paul. I really enjoy seeing these shorter regional flights (as well as the medium and long haul international ones). It’s great to see a variety of aircraft types, routes and airports. It’s shame, for a number of reasons, about the smoke on this flight but at least you had regional business class 😉.
cheers mate. lol regional J
my god is that a tiger aircraft man I haven't seen one in years
ATR seems like a good regional aircraft in general. miss having it in the virgin fleet..
Those poor folks with the fires, shame no pics of the coast. Thanks Paul
cheers Deb. yeh its' very sad :(
Another good one Paul, I had the luck to fly in a Fokker F70 LR from Coffs to Canberra and back last week to fight fires down there. I'll be interested to hear your comments.
Cheers Rex. My Fokker 70 video is already out although my Fokker 50 will be a week away :)
I got an empty seat next to me when I flew Qantas QF1494 with Dash 8 Q400 series from Canberra (CBR) to Sydney (SYD) on 5/10/2019
Nice! Always good to get an empty seat next to you :)
There was a Qantas boeing 747 at the start of the vid
Another great Video. You didn't mentioned that Virgin Australia use the B737-800 on Trans Tasman and South Pacific Islands services.
True they do
I do this route in the flight simulator all the time! With virgin Au But I live in Perth
Its a also sad to see Virgin Au nearly shut down
Very good video!!!!!
cheers
I never been on this type vrigin Australia
I went on one of those they are really cool
Absolutely! And I just booked on an Air Nz one for later in the year.
reminds me of the dash-q-400
Good video Paul I really like them just a tip when u pronounce Forster it’s a silent r so therefore foster
cheers on the pronunciation, I didn't realise that about Foster. Learn something new every day :)
Nice video Paul ! You should fly More on the ATR
cheers mate, yep they're cool little aircraft. There's something special about flying in a prop aircraft :D I'm booked to fly in a Fokker 50 tomorrow :)
I’ll take this plane from Port Macquarie to Sydney on 17th of this month. Looking forward to experience propeller plane for the first time.
Enjoy my friend
There are four to five old Virgin ATRs parked up at Nelson airport in New Zealand. They've been there for a while now.
Any idea why they're not using them? Or does Jetstar's departure from the NZ dom market suggesting there just isn't the demand?
@@PaulStewartAviation I have actually been shown around them a few months back by the engineer. They're all the older 500 models that are being kept in storage there. Apparently pilots are all transitioning to the newer 600 models and for some operational risk reason once they do then they can't go back to flying 500s. So the pool of pilots for the type is shrinking worldwide.. They're in Nelson as Air NZ has its maintenance base there for ATRs and Q300s. They're being kept air worthy until somebody steps in and takes them. I think a few already have left at various times to join other operators..
@@MrRamyon74 interesting to know! cheers
Lucky you, caught an ATR not long before virgin got rid of them
Yeah I was lucky to have flown on this and their Fokker 100s before they're retired too.
Passenger turboprops occupy an interesting niche but one that's become smaller and smaller as very high bypass turbofans have become the norm even for smaller aircraft. I wanted to check out the situation and was surprised to find ATR 72s and 42s are still in production. ATR had revenue of $1.8 billion last year, not bad and they make about 52 to 80 planes per year.
Yep it's true that there's now more and more smaller jets. Making aircraft should be pretty profitable since the developing world now wants them and once you've developed it, they only require minor upgrades. This is in stark contrast with the automotive industry where a brand new car is expected every 4-5 years.
@@PaulStewartAviation Avionics upgrades are the most common. That model 600 that you flew in has a fully glass cockpit for example and FADEC.
Another fantastic flight review Paul btw #areyoustillsingle???
cheers Lisa haha who knows
nice footage :) i love travelling
Cheers mate, me too :)
Awesome. Sad to see the bad haze from the smoke in Sydney.
cheers and yeah it was sad to see the smoke haze all along the east coast.
Great video Paul
I've never been in a turbo prop plane before
How long was the flight
WHat about the 777s
They don't fly domestically :) I mentioned the domestic fleet that fly to SYD :D
Shame VA got rid of them, I think Hevilift picked some up but not many left in Aus now, but I prefer them over the Dash 8
Yeh it was sad to see them go 😔
Great work. Try and fly an F50...perhaps look overseas to do that. F50s still fly in Australia but on charter flights run by Alliance Airlines. The F50 is a unique aircraft and different from ATR's and Dash 8s. It's one of my favourite turboprop aircraft.
haha you've read my mind! I'm literally flying to Adelaide tonight to fly one to Olympic Dam tomorrow! :)
@@PaulStewartAviation Oh that's fantastic mate. So happy for you. I'm from Perth and F50s are missed here in WA. Make sure whilst doing the vid of the flight you narrate and mention the cruise speed too (as well as altitude).
of course i will :)
@@PaulStewartAviation cheers mate
A couple of weeks ago I went on virgin australia and flew on a 737 max8 and I don’t know if they operated at Melbourne and not Sydney because they weren’t at Sydney
VA dont have any 737Max aircraft in Australia
That 747 was probably back from South Africa. They fly the 747’s to South Africa nonstop. Not sure where else they are using them still.
Ummmm yeah I'm just jogging my memory. It might of been SFO?
Hong Kong
You forgot the Fokker 100 and a320s in perth
They don't fly to Sydney I don't believe?
5:10
check out that traffic queue at the bottom - what a mess lol
#sydney
haha
wait, isn't that normal Sydney traffic?
probably yes - I don't live there
Paul, it looks very dry around Sydney. Do you have some idea of how much precip has occurred there over the last few months? I'm assuming very little.
Yeh no much I'm afraid :(
But another great video
cheers
Safe travels Paul! Was the smoke from the bush fires you Aussies have been experiencing? :(
cheers and yes :(
This looks like a new aircraft
Fairly new
I thought it was
Queues are bad at check in, not security. Doesn't help that half the self check in machines don't work. Fly QANTAS. So much less stress.
In my experience, the queues are terrible at both check-in and security. Horrible terminal haha
The bushfire haze doesn't look pretty. Nice to see you on another ATR. Think half of VAs ATRs are in New Zealand in storage
cheers matthew. Are they? They're not profitable in NZ?
@@PaulStewartAviation unsure Paul Nelson has 5 or 6 Virgin Australia ATRs parked up. Maybe they're not profitable in Australia?
The ARR-72 is far superior then the dash 8
Hey mate, why do you say that?
RIP VA ATRs. The China Flu got them, along with so many in the VA fleet
Yeah it's very sad to see that won't be returning. Maybe in a few years when VA settles and starts to expand again. :(
How are you allowed to film when out on the apron? I've tried before here in New Zealand when boarding from the outside, and get very angry ground crew advising me to stop filming ....not fun when I'm just trying to get a good picture or video of the aircraft..
When I film I hold the camera away from my face so it's clear that I am watching where I walk. The problem appears to be when people are looking at their phones and cameras instead of where they are walking.
like the atr,,, don't like the price of airport food,,, really like virgin Australia,,,
haha fair comment Greg
but good flight
0:00 IS THAT A B747 LANDING?!?!
Yep
We have virgin australia come to my home airport in Mackay but we only get 737 800s and 737 700s
Edit: Did you know about Virgin australia’s future is going unanswered? Very sad hope its future is clear and will survive
Ah yes, the 737 is an oddly proportioned thing :)
Youre lucky your flight was 48 minutes! air new zealand use these aircraft on their long regional routes. example Christchurch - tauranga 2hours one way. and wellington - invercargill 2 hrs and 5 minutes one way.
Yeah 2hrs in one of these would be an experience! :o haha
VA used to use theirs on 2 hour runs in Queensland too. Not the best experience. And yes I've done Hamilton to Christchurch and Tauranga to Christchurch in the ATR. not the best ride at all. I managed to get Dash 8s on the return legs. A bit better
@@AR-yb4tz Interesting. because air new zealands 72 fleet is alot new than their Dash 8 with them will taking deliveries of the ATR (just think they received their final one) they are more spacious Quieter. and have more room specially for luggage and the bathroom has running water.
@@ryanjared4263 I find the Dash 8 roomier. Better seat pitch too.
How do you find the RM's Paul? Thinking about getting a pair!
haha well spotted. Yeh they're OK. They seem to be wearing faster than I thought BUT I guess I use them every day. I'll get back to you in 6 months :)
Thanks mate! I will hold you to that
The legroom of ATR72 in Virgin fleet I think is the most generous, then comes with 737-700, 737-800. The A332s are hopeless, knee crasher. ( Economy seat of course)
I haven't flown in their A320s to be honest. They're mostly out west i think?
@@PaulStewartAviation Looks like that. All 6 VA A320s and 2 QF A320s operate in WA and use PER as a hub. And I find one stands out: VA1897 KGI-MEL with A320
@@PaulStewartAviation To be exact, VA regional and QF link
what about the fires!
Yeh they're not good :(
i travel a lot in ATR72-600 . but the one nepali local airlines acquired are shit af . they probably bought 5th-6th hand .
Yeh they're possibly quite old.
What date did you take this flight?
Dec 19th :)
@@PaulStewartAviation Oh because if it was from January 1st - January 11th I might have seen your flight fly over from where I was staying on my vacation in Australia.
Atr72? Huh so there are ATR shuttle bodies different from the rest
I've been to Sydney airport via ATR72 from Albury back in September of 2019
There are two models - the ATR 72 and 42.
@@PaulStewartAviation oooooh.
But cool
😃
I beg my mum to fly on virgin Australia but she says it’s to expensive and we fly Jetstar
Get into that piggy bank and maybe in the future you'll get into VA. :) Sadly they've grounded their ATRs although I've got some vlogs coming up in September where I'll be flying a few Air NZ ATRs around the South Island so keep an eye out for those :)
@@PaulStewartAviation thanks I will save up and on long reach also.thanks for the idea.sometimes beg my mum to fly on virgin Australia and now I can soon
That would been a short flight
Very short!
