toughest workout in my life, working a 12 hr shift hungover in the sun
+Isaac Funny. I would often get an "ultra hangover" the day after an ultra marathon. Though not usually after my long training runs. Like yesterday, I did a 50K training run and no hangover today! No alcohol required for an ultra hangover by the way...
sure.....
Hardest workout I ever did was once a year in high school we had to run as many 200s as we could at 30 seconds with 30 second rest
Clunky Fountain That gonna hurt
Clunky Fountain I swear some hs coaches are actually stupid. It's taken me YEARS to shake the "run like a hero" attitude that polluted my hs running experience
nice one haha
I just ran 60 miles this week 😀
“ I just did a 20 mile run”- Sage. Man I wish I was you!!! I respect you a lot man!!!
In my freshmen year for cross country, my coach made us do 12x400m hill repeats. I nearly collapsed and passed out by the end of the work out. But it gave me the mental toughness that I knew I could keep running even when it is sore.
It's great when you learn from past training mistakes but sometimes it's soooo damn hard to hold back during one of those few speed workouts where you actually feel good!
Great insight. Loved it. Best of luck at CIM!
My hardest workout was a 10km race. All my friends had been running PRs and kind of rubbing it in my face, and despite my hard work I wasn't churning out anything special. So I went into the race with a determination to break my personal best. I knew it was in striking range so I decided going in I would endure all the physical pain thrown at me and keep going. The thought was that as long as I could concentrate on my turnover and grit through it, I would succeed. It was an out and back course and when I did the 180 I had ran very close to a 5km time I had run just earlier that week. I knew I couldn't maintain the pace for the next 5km. Yet I gritted my teeth the whole way back, and only lost 10 seconds. For 2 weeks I had a lot of chest pains and didn't run too great. But at the end of that two weeks I still wasn't feeling normal but raced again. I won my first 5k while shaving about a minute off my previous time. A few weeks later I shaved another minute off. That one really hard workout pushed me to another level of fitness. But it was dangerous. I could have easily fallen ill or gotten hurt and lost quite a bit of fitness.
Really enjoyed this style of video, Sage!
10 x 800 on 3 minutes with 90 seconds rest.. 85 degrees out
800 reps are very rough
george atanasov RESPECT
I have done this exact workout in 80 something degree weather with humidity, it sucked. The discomfort from the heat was worse than the discomfort from running.
Love the video bro
wtf? 30x400? Thats impressive
Our coach had us originally do the 8x200m workout, but changed it to just a mile and 4x200m. Just did a 4.5 mile run, tapering for regionals and state. Thankfully didn't run into any lactic acid issues!
love you!
6x300 at 42-43 with 2:30 rest, felt lactic within 200m.
10 400s flat out (65-69 by the end) with 1min rest killed me, but I raced a 1500 PB a week and a half later.
My hardest work est in high school was 6x300s 100% effort. I was close to passing out by the end, had to lay on the ground for 10 minutes.
Sage: you are a very fast, determined, and disciplined runner. Most world class professional and amateur runner specialize at certain race distance. I realize that 100 miles seems to be the premier distance in ultra running. However, have you considered concentrating on dominating the shorter 50k and 50 mile distances rather than training for these 100 mile+ distances?
+John That is a good point. Sage has done well in the 50K distance. And so would most good marathon runners who convert to trail running and ultra marathons.
Glad we had this talk! Call me Doctor.. but no bill....lol Happy 2018 and beyound.
I ran 2 10ks on the treadmill, one in 2500M altitude. My HR was 160 for both the first 5k and pace was 13kmh and 11kmh at altitude. So I think if you're either not acclimatised or as fit as Sage then altitude can have a greater impact than 10 seconds per mile!
+Ironman Altitude does make it much harder. It takes a few weeks at least to acclimate.
No mention of the famous Hansons-Brooks bread and butter 2×6 miles sub marathon lactate threshold workouts? Heard those are really difficult.
15x400 avg 72 with a 66 every 3rd one
Training Topic or 'Rant' request: considering that cadence is only one variable of pace - stride length being the other - is it considered naughty, or at least, unsporting, to use a metronome during a race? I'm a beginner and used a digital metronome to maintain a steady, 'good running form' cadence during my (47.52) 10K yesterday, but I got more than a few odd looks from my fellow competitors as I made steady progress through the field; finishing 930th of 8,500 competitors. I can imagine it's not permitted at an elite level, but what about us mere mortals who just want to do the best we can? This could even be discussed as part of a 'racing etiquette' talk/rant. Thanks, Derek
+djwindhoek Use the metronome. Till they pull you off the course and disqualify you. Alternatively, you can use headphones and have the metronome sound in mp3 format.
Sage will you be running the Boston Marathon this year or next year?
The Boston Marathon this year (2017) has already taken place on April 17th! The Boston Marathon is always held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. So I guess Sage will be running there in 2018 :-)!
1000 m repeats are the best
Hey Sage for a Half marathon in fall when would you say doing speed work?
In track season I will be running the 1500m and 3000m. In cross country, I did the 4000m. Do I decrease my weekly mileage?
1 x 3000m uphill, 1 x 2000m and 1 x 1000m with 1 minute rec in between.
My hardest workout (I’m a sophomore in high school RN so this is from last year during track) we ran 20x400 at 75 second pace (i barley ran 20 minute 5k’s at the time so this was extremely hard for me)
Rest was about 2 minutes
By 17 I was running 90 seconds for each 400
7x800m at faster than 5k pb pace with 30 second rest between reps
20 × 75metre hill repeats
I'm 13 and I did the 8x 200m under 32 with a 30 second break in between
NINJA KURTLE impressive im 12 and i did 11x200 60 sec break slowest one was 33 avg'd 32
sage what are those things called for ur legs
Is the take away message from this video that mild, consistent training is better than high intensity over load?
I don't really think that one type of training over the other is a good perspective. My recommendation is balance the two and make sure to incorporate some of both into your training.
Seems that way.
My coach wanted me te do a 500m all out, 60s rest, 400m, 60s, 500m, 5min rest, then 20x 200m.
The lactic acid came during the first 500m already, I had huge positive splits and didn't make it past the 10th 200m. Total BS training session.
+JamesBond Yes. And that if you get lots of views on your CZcams videos, you get free stuff from advertisers! By the way, when is your next Bond movie coming out? And who is going to play you??? Since I can use a job...
Hey Sage can you talk about running with thalassemia i.e. Genetically low hemoglobin? I have thalassemia and anemia. Do I have a lower ceiling in marathon time than normal people? Thank you!
Ran Duan talk to a doc.
Athletes with thalassemia are at a disadvantage. However, it depends on type and severity. Talk to your doctor!
+RanDuan Maybe talk with some Sports Medicine Doctors and get their advice. But no matter what, you can improve your marathon by good training and good nutrition and proper sleep etc.
How do you like those air boots?
Duncan Mills sponsor
+Duncan If Sage doesn't like them, he can give them to me. I wanted some of those a couple years ago...not necessarily that brand.
I tried them at a race expo and my legs felt awesome! I have a friend who swears by them. I wish they weren't $$$ but if I had the money I'd definitely get them.
+Sesa It is tough to balance both time and money. Hard to have both so that you can train the way you want to and have all the training gear you want. I had wanted to do a lot more than I had the last few years but budgets severely limited what I was able to do. Quite disappointing, as I know I could have done much much more...
4x300/600 + 400 all out (62)
Omg same, 600 and 300 reps are so difficult
wtf 30x400 in 69 with 45 second rest!?!?!? How did you not break 14 in the 5k?
i think he is a liar
Mohamed boumlik I wouldn't be surprised if injuries came up or he was just overtrained as hell in races.
Toughest for me is probably doing 8 800 meter dashes in middle school at 90 percent race pass
+Wesley It is "pace" not "pass".
I know it was just a typo thx
I am -2 years old and i did a workout of 10000000 by 26.2mi. Am i fast?
Decent
-3 year olds at my school do twice that in half the time
You’re bad. You need to improve
Karvin Sunny Li you didn't give a time so it's impossible to say doofus.
Karvin Sunny Li that better be up and down mount Everest as a warmup
Getting out of bed
16X400. 20 seconds rest.... so literally nothing. enough time to splash water.
80 seconds each 400
Wrestling is the hardest sport imo
Do you even know what lactic acid is?
