Brian May of Queen says he got his sound from watching Rory as a kid & asking him questions which Rory always listened to & responded to. He says Rory was always kind to him & his friends never acting like a star that didn't have time, he was a real person. No one ever says anything bad about Rory. Rush's first tour was as the warm up band, they said he was so supportive of them, ten years later Rush was the headliner with Rory as the warm up, they repaid his kindness.

No such thing as the greatest guitar player in my book, but when it comes to my personal favourite it has to be Rory Gallagher. I've seen Hendrix, Kossof, Clapton, Santana, and many other greats but he's the only one that gets the hair on the back of my neck standing. Certain guitatrists have a unique sound thats copied by others but his sound is truly unique to the point i've never heard anything remotely like it.

Other great players like Brian May, Keith Richards ,Pete Townsend Jimmy Page and Johnny Marr were inspired by Rory , recognition from your peers is the best . Rory always refused to release singles and shunned the pop star game or he would have been more widely known, great musician and song writer ,but on stage performing he was at his best.

The amount of space they give each other adds so much. Who said the secret wasn't what you played, but what you didn't play? Can't remember. Not an easy skill to keep; saying it is one thing, these guys did it. Even the bass may sound busy, with the riffs spanning more than an octave, but there's still a crispness about it. It keeps their music still fresh today, and for some might be a bit disconcerting at times, the recording is hardly 'sweetened' at all. They weren't outside the box, they were never issued one.

To this day his guitar lines are still very unique, especially considering how many others benefited from his playing, none of them actually do that same kind of things he did. Incredible dynamics, no fear of empty space where others might have tried to fill it in. And the guys behind him are a freaking synchronized machine, again doing a few things that still are uncommon since.

i was lucky to see Taste in '70 at the IOW, just after i turned 16 and a few years later pestered some pals to come with me to the Cambridge Corn Exchange to see him as some had never seen him. When he did Bullfrog Blues and he played the first lick the whole crowd just stood there and looked at their arms, at each other, because of the goosebumps. Never seen anything like that in my life, this was just the 3 piece band, i never really cared for the version with the keyoboard player.

@@NavvyMom by all accounts he was a lovely man, and although i was never fortunate enough to meet him i witnessed his generousity many times. with Taste at the IOW there was a schedule to follow, so his set lasted a specific time, but later he was renowned for not leaving the stage until the fans got their fill. i went to one gig where the police were called as the set went way, way beyond the scheduled time, and the organisers had to come on stage mid song, ask him to stop, and explain the situation. there are also stories of venues actually turning off the power temporarily to stop him, and i remember they did it once when i saw him, so he simply got the acoustic out and played few numbers until he was persuaded to leave. he was born to entertain, adored playing and would play for anybody, anywhere

Absolutely - these two tracks are the essence of a live Rory concert. I saw him perform twice with his band Taste (in 1969 and 1970) and then about twenty times with the band he formed after Taste split. Catfish and Sinner Boy (live at the Isle of Wight) are great tracks from the early years (even though this was not the first Taste line up!), but the real masterpieces are from his live performances in the 70s. He could play electric guitar (Stratocaster, Telecaster, Gretsch and others!), acoustic, mandolin, ukulele, even sitar. And saxophone too. The quieter tracks on the first album after Taste are also fantastic. Rory could play blues, rock, rock n roll, folk, country and all at the highest level. More Rory reactions - PLEASE!!!!

That edginess Amber is hearing comes from the Celtic influence that were always a big part of Rory's sound.

I would put forward "Rory Gallagher - (Live At The San Diego Civic Center, CA, USA / 1974), but you can see the bands chemistry in action, in the second video which is "Do You Read Me" Rock goes to College. both Live tracks show his talent, and how the band Gel's in concert.

In all these polls for the greatest guitarist of all time, they are all just playing for second place as Rory is miles ahead in first. Saw him three times throughout his career and he is quite simply the finest guitarist I have ever seen and I've see a few! Please check out 'Out on the Western Plain and Want Ad blues from the Cork Opera house, Rory playing acoustic, just the finest thing you can put in your ears!

I highly recommend Shadow Play, Moonchild, Laundromat, Last Of The Independents, Pistol Slapper Blues, Too Much Alcohol, and Hands Off! ✌️

I listened to Rory when I was young, long ago. I also listened to many guitar players that either influenced Rory or who were influenced by him. One of the lesser known that I recommend to all is Davy Knowles. Many do know him but not like Marc Knopfler, Eric Clapton and many others touched by Rory. Look for Davy under his name and/or Back Door Slam.
