Thank you 🙏🖤
The part where you added foil to make certain parts thicker was very helpful. Never knew that was a thing but I'm glad you did that. It's going to help with projects that needed thicker foil in spots.
You did a very good job with giving tips as you went along with each piece, You are a natural presenter and confident in what you do. You surely are doing it straight from the hip and not a written script! I'm super happy to be a subscriber to your channel--inspiration to get back into what I love. GLASS ART!!!

Awesome!!! Welcome to stained glass!
Miss Hollie, Thank you so much for another great tip on your videos to remedy the foil split on concave glass cuts but I have been facing with many of my projects.
How deep copper foil should be on glass ?
Of coarse! Thank you so much for watching!!
It depends on every piece! There is no set answer unfortunately, you have to base it on strength, look, glass type etc and make the best educated choice!

It makes perfect sense thickening the copper foil
Thank u so much for sharing this video im so happy 🥰 I found u on CZcams.

I'm learning so much from you. I love your clear down to earth style. I'm a Newby and so far only worked with glass nuggets. Any chance you could do a session on foiling glass nuggets? Also I think you can add wire on the edge of the foil to create a bit of a ridge to the edge (that might be more for jewellery?). I love how you add links to everything you use too. Fantastic!!
I too would like to learn about adding round glass pieces and how to make/add wire designs ie antennas, filigree designs! TY
P.s love the Tatts and the nails, so good to see.. 🤙🏼
Thanks man!!!! Me too. Lol!
you answered my problem lol i am having with my cross suncatchers they were feeling flimsy like they might break apart now i know how to fix it thanks
Oh jeez yea, flimsy at all is not good!! They should be strong enough to resist bending trying pretty hard! I'm glad I answered your questions!! Thank you for watching!!
Makenzie can't thank you enough for taking the time to craft your videos and comprehensively educate us on stained glass - you're quite the artist! I'm new to this art and started off working with lead came. Beyond the visual attributes of the came are there any specific reasons to use one type of came as opposed to another? Any guidance would be most appreciated and again thank you!
Amazing videos, thank you! Do you ever use Re-Strip copper vertically between joints to give it added strength? I would love to learn how to do that.
Very very rarely do i. Only for much larger, mainly foiled panels. And you legit just wedge that bitch between the foil! I can put this on the list for upcoming videos though! (I will say i most of the time don't find it necessary.)
i am really enjoying your videos. is there a video for the soldering of this piece? i like that you take time to explain completely and repeat the most salient points. i saw a video of you soldering, but it wasn't an entire piece. i struggle with gaps and having solder fall through (i ordered the iron you use. i have previously only used crappy wellers, but hoping this will improve the quality of my lines) i would love to see a video of you tackling those kinds of issues. you explain and demonstrate so well
Hello! If your having any gapping, I would say you need to go back to the cutting and grinding step and really perfect that. You shouldn't have any gaping between your pieces, it will loose all its strength. But my soldering video goes over everything for making that perfect bead, and just practicing! It takes years to perfect this art! Just keep going with it!
Hello: I just found your website and am thrilled that I did!. My question: Did I understand that the smaller pieces at the bottom of your panel, were foiled without grinding the edges? Looking forward to watching all of your videos to learn your techniques. Beautiful work! Thank you.
I almost always have ripples in the foil down the seal I'm going do it back and forth more like you do
oh yea you absolutely have to burnish the foil before you solder!
Soooooooo...Beautiful 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Thanks!
Question: The edges of my glass chip when grinding. Do I need a new grinder bit or am I holding my glass wrong?
You could be pushing too hard, or you need a softer grit bit. So a coarse bit, on iridescent glass, its just going to chip. Try a softer bit first, see if that does the trick. ♡

Thank you so much for all of your videos, your explanations and human way of teaching have been a game changer for me! I am wondering if you have any tips for first steps in a project/ getting everything to line up... I am struggling with not having gaps between pieces, especially for squared projects. When I say struggling... its catastrophic...
Well, that's normal. As annoying as it is to hear, "practice makes perfect." There is no one size fits all solution for these types of things beyond just practicing and figuring out what it is that you are doing specifically, that's leaving you with these larger gaps. Remember, some gap-ing is not only unavoidable but needed for the strength of the piece. You don't want every single piece wedged together, so tightly you're risking breaking your glass every time you fit your design together. If you have these catastrophic gaps, go back remake those pieces, lay it on top of your stencil, try to figure out where you went wrong or move forward with the gaps, filling those gaps with 50/50 solder and then laying your bead work with 60/40. Then, move on to the next project. Repeat until you get better and better and better. I always tell everybody this art takes years to master. So the more hours you put into it, even if it's 10 minutes every single day, the better you're gonna get. That's just the reality of this type of art.
Thank you so much for the speedy response and the (as always) spot-on tips, I had no idea about using the 50/50 to fill gaps and tried this today and BAM catastrophic turned into Christmas worthy piece I made for my newly married sister of the Mountain View from where they got married, pretty special. I have been working on this project for over a month and was ready to throw in the towel, you saved the day, thanks again! @@MakenzieHallie
Your so welcome!! 🖤🖤
I love your videos ❤️❤️❤️ I’m taking a beginning stained glass class but your techniques are so much more in line with my natural instincts vs what I am being taught. A question - when patching a foil tear (like on a curve), my instructor says you “must” use a piece of foil that runs front to back (perpendicular) and extends beyond the line of the existing foil, then trim with exacto. Hopefully that makes sense - I mean wrapping from front to back, covering both sides. I see you use small strips parallel on one side only. Of course my instinct is to do what you do. . Any thoughts on this “must”?
It's all going to be what you deem works best. We all make glass differently, so it's totally up to you. I am self taught, so I know half of people agree with me and the other half do not. Lol!! Im glad your enjoying my channel. Try everything and follow your gut on what is showing the best results!
1st off I LOVE your videos! Thank you! I never would have gotten this far without your help. 2nd, I am hoping you can help me figure out what am I doing wrong? It has to be something between the foiling & soldering. I can get the bead to build up perfectly within the piece but my outer edges are horrible! It’s almost as if all I can get is the thinnest layer of solder to stick directly to the foil. The more I try the build up the bead it makes the foil lift right off the glass. Should I give it a wash once more after laying the foil down? I’m making sure the foil is layed down and no lifting edges before I flux. Am I maybe using too much flux? Any insight would be so helpful!
Hi Makenzie, Awesome video. Would you happen to have the patterns for some of your projects eg. the moon and wolf project ?
I am trying to figure out a way to get my stencils to you guys asap!! I have to find the best way to get you guys good quality, clear printable images. I'm looking into a couple platforms. ♡ keep you posted!
Hi Makenzie, Do you only use one quarter inch foil? I REALLY enjoy your videos. You are so self assured in all phases of stained glass......I hope to get more at ease with all the steps to complete projects. You are da BOMB. Thank you for trying to teach us.
hey there! Yes that is 9x out of 10 the size I use, it fits all styles of glass and gives that nice thick edge for a good bubble, that I personally enjoy. However I think that's a rare opinion! lol I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos! thank you for continuing to watch!
Oh girl, Those nails! I don’t see how you do it! 🤭 That nasty foil split, I hate it! I’m thinking about laying down a patch piece first on those deep curves that I know it’s going to split no matter how slow I fold it down. Then applying the full long piece over that. What do you think? I notice that brand your using,...I had two bad spools of the black back in that brand. After I finished soldering, I could see the black backing coming apart through the glass and sometime the foil wouldn’t stayed adhered to the glass. I thought it was me or that it was temperature/humidity related, so I got a different brand and it works perfectly, which as you can imagine made me feel so relieved I wasn’t losing my touch. As usual, another great video! 👏 👏 👏
What do you put in your jars with the flux and the oil for your cutter? Is it cotton swabs?
was wanting to know how your do your foiled outer edge so that the foil stays on the glass and doesn't come away when washing or polishing it. Thanks Mark
Hi Mark! If the foil isn't sticking, even after soldering, something is wrong. Either the glass is not ground, cleaned, wrapped or burnished properly. Small thing like the oils on your fingertips can affect the stick of that copper foil. Making sure your glass edges are properly ground, cleaned and free of any oils before wrapping is number 1. Burnishing as good as possible. Number 2, do not hold your iron on the foil so long that it starts to melt the adhesive on the copper foil. 3 could also be not creating a proper bead on your edge. If the foil has been prepped and applied properly, the only other thing can be that your not building a bead, after tinning all your foil edges. Hope this helps!
You make four things look so easy. I struggle so bad at this, even though I practice. I use 7/32. I heard you mention that you use a quarter inch should I try that since I'm not new new but but I haven't felt like any of my pieces were good enough to sell at least I'm not happy with it. I tend to be a perfectionist I may just have to get over myself
Hey I really enjoy your videos, Do you have to copper foil twice a piece of glass. Sometimes I have to put two strips on a piece to make the foil equal.
Hello, thank you so much! I would really strive to only have one layer of foil down, evenly on your first go. If you have multiple layers around all your work, it will decrease the strength in which your bead builds and hugs your edges, especially if your foil ledge sits on top of another layer. If your really struggling with keeping your foil even I would step back and simply just practice foiling some junk glass, and experimenting with different size foil! Thank you for watching and hope this helps!
First of all I’ve only seen two of your videos and I’ve already learned so much that I didn’t know from the last year or so of practicing stained glass, so thank you so much for that!!
Second, I have a question about the thicker foil technique you did on the moon (at 12:20 on the vid), did you only thicken the foil on the front side to make it stronger? If so, could you do it just on the back to add strength but then it keeps the front side edges all looking the same?
Thank you again for the effort you put into these videos they are so thorough and well made 🙏🏼❤️
I have the same question regarding extra foil to strengthen a piece like your moon! Perhaps you could join over again with more detail and close up ! Thank you
When you put on the second foil to extend it, will the solder and flux wick up under the original foil and the second strip to bond them both together? I would think that would make a stronger joint.
Unfortunately it does not, once you burnish that small patch it very much is one with the layer underneath it. So keeping those patches small and too a minimum is a must!
Great video. You should work as a back scratcher on the weekends. LoL.
lmfao, im sure if you asked my husband, that is my weekend job! lol!!! Thank you for watching!! I'm so sorry this response took so long, i'm going through pages of comments youtube never notified me of!!!
hi, i'm begginer of stained glass and i have a question that is the surface of cooper foil matter when we do solder? i have a problem that when i solder peices together it doesn't smooth.. thank you so much 🙏
I am trying to find a glastar foiler to buy and cant find one for sale anywhere. Do you have any suggestions?
What do you do to prepare the glass for wrapping with the foil?
Do you have to wrap it all around? If you do it half way, will the copper peel off later since its not connecting all the way through?
How the hell can you have such a cute hands? 😅😅 and how.... can you work with those nails ?😁 mine are all cutted and burned and i dont even have those nails ... respect
Well thanks! My hands are my favorite part of my body, I no that probably sounds strange lol!!! And my nails are like tools, help me to work even better! When I first started glass, my hands were definitely a lot more beat up. Thank you for watching !! 🖤🖤
I was wondering that, too. My nails grind away with the grinder...
Use your nails as your fingertips. Don't let them go anywhere near the bit! 🖤
When you widen the copper foil to add strength (like you did on the moon), do you add to both sides of the piece or only the front? Thanks
It's totally dependent on the piece. I wouldn't even particularly do this anymore to be totally honest. Beyond patches. Just use the correct sized foil.
Superb .. Păcat ca nu inteleg ce spuneți. Acea folie cum se numește?
Do you only use 1/4 “ foil? Just wondering cause I watched a couple of other videos and they used narrower...so I’m just trying to figure it out...thank you, your videos do help to make sense of the turmoil.
I do not! I mainly use 7/32 black backed! It's all on whatever you want the look to be and strength needed!
Still deciding about getting into stained glass and just wanted to ask if you have the 1st piece you made?
I indeed do! Its the only piece I've ever kept, I actually show it in my recent Q & A! Here is the link- czcams.com/video/DKQsnGxnDjs/video.html
Thank you for watching!
Does your foil ever “unstick” when you’re cleaning piece? I always discover these areas after I’ve soldered.
Not now. However thats absolutely something thats happened to me before, when I first started. If the foil is not properly applied and burnished on a CLEAN, oil/ glass mud free surface, it can and will absolutely lift. Then, if your not building a proper bead up and just tinning those edges, they will always lift and fall apart. Lastly, if you hold your iron on one area to long, it can absolutely melt the copper foil adhesive, rendering it useless. Need to remove that foil and do it again. I no it sucks but forcing yourself to start that area over will really help with learning the do's and dont's. Use some wire cutters and peel back those foil edges, scrub nice and good with clean soapy water and re apply new foil. Tin that edge quickly, then build that bead up strong. You want to be able to really scrub all your foil edges and have no lifting issues. Hope this helps!
Is it possible to over burnished my foil...my first pieces I have ever done....they seemed like there wasn’t enough foil on the outer edges and once soldered they feel like they are lifting away from the glass. So I don’t know if I over burnished or I just de-tinned my foil. Just wonder what your thought are
Well, that's tough to say. If they are lifting it would be because they weren't burnished enough, edges weren't sufficiently cleaned (even oils from fingertips can mess that up), soldering iron too hot, and more. If the glass is too thick for that particular size foil, then you need to go up a size. Hope that helps!! Trial and error, paying attention to the small things.
Hi Makenzie! I finally tried out my grinder today (it wasn't that bad) but I was wondering how to tell when you've ground the glass enough before foiling? Do the edge of the glass need to become opaque? Some of my pieces of glass the edges were half shiny half opaque (does that mean I need to replace the bit? I got the grinder used) also, does the foil measure exact? I have some foil in mystery sizes, one is about 1/4" and the other is like 6/10" or something 😅 alsooo btw I live in SD and a local company bought Spectrum (Oceanside Glass and Tile) and all their formulas and they're gonna start producing stuff again. Crossing my fingers for iridescent for you!
Do the edges*
Hello! I'm so sorry I didn't see this until now, good ol youtube didn't notify me! BUT yes all the areas on your edges need to become opaque and even. Half shiny means un-ground on half. So anywhere its still shiny, smooth or sharp didn't make contact with the grinder. Most likely a bit placement issue unless its not consistent in where the contact is or isnt being made, if that makes sense. Grinding the edges will make your piece fit better as well as make for better foil adhesion, so even if the foil stuck, I would suggest getting those edges ground evenly! Hope this helps! And as for spectrum, yes, but as they are now based out of the country, when we do start seeing there iridescent again, not only will it take longer, but they are only bringing back the "most popular" shades, and all only in fusible. AKA more expensive, and for those of us that don't often fuse, for no reason. BUT they are bringing some back, so ill take it lol . Last year I was told end of 2020 to start to expect to see some rolling out, hopefully rona didn't prolong that.
How do you make a right angle cut in glass?
So if you can't make a cut in the design, you'd have to use a ring saw! Like the zephyr or taurus that's on my channel.
In the lower left corner of this piece you left the pieces unground, for snug fit as they were from same piece of glass, How would you treat them if they were different pieces of glass?
Great video! Quick question...how long can the wrapped pieces wait until I solder them? Is there a good way to store them until I can solder them? Also, how long is the copper tape good once I’ve opened the package? I’m just learning...
Thank you! It all depends on outside factors, all foil tends to oxidize differently, if I HAVE to keep a foiled piece for a week or two, ill keep it out of the sun, tucked away in a dark drawer. You want to solder as quick as you can, foil is not meant to be its on edging. Not only for oxidation but separation, wear and tear, you want to solder asap!
Thank you! I have class once a week and hope to foils one week and solder the next. Your videos are spectacular. You are a gifted teacher :)
That will be fine! Also take into consideration what your instructor suggests, thank you for watching!
Carefully putting on your copper foil makes all the difference in how your soldering looks. For beginners I'd get a burnishing tool it helps to get the foil down really well they're super cheap.
Please tell us about copper foil, I'm having a hard time with mine lifting. I'm doing all the right things....clean glass, not touching the edges, burnishing ...saying a prayer! What is the best brand? Thanks Makenzie, Love your videos
Ok so if the edges are lifting its 1 of two things. Oil is being transferred to the glass somewhere. Be it your natural oils from your fingertips, or the cleaner your using after grinding. You would be SHOCKED at the small amount of oils that can cause that issue. Go back through EVERY step of the process to eliminate foreign oils on the glass edge. If it TRULY isnt that, then its an iron/solder that is too hot. Turn that temperature down until your in that sweet spot. I am reluctant to say its the foil because that is a more slim chance. Unless your using years old foil thats been oxidizing in the air. Hope this helps! (I can do a vid too) 🖤 Any basic foil from Amazon should be just fine. I have links to all my fav products under every vid. 🖤

Yes, I absolutely can! I will be filming a video about soldering tomorrow for my next video!! I'll fit as much as I can in, in reference to solder, patina, iron temps etc. Thank you for watching!!
I have a question for some reason, some times after I foil and make sure it’s on there with a tool, when I Sauter little pieces of the foiling comes up and it’s happening more and more frequently could that be a problem with my soldering iron or something else?
Oh no! Thats Definitely a foil issue. Something is preventing a proper adhesion. Whether that be outside factors like to much oil from your fingers, crappy foil, not clean enough glass etc. Go back to your pre foiling stage and make sure all work surfaces/hands/glass is clean as can be before foiling. Also double check the integrity of your foil. No signs of oxidation or warping!
@@MakenzieHallie thanks so much! Really appreciate the help 😊

Why wouldn’t you be able to cut the moon in one cut? And would you be able to cut out circles and fill them in with another circle?
I am doing a piece for a friend and when I cut and put together all the pieces they were perfect. Then I foiled them and now I have gaps and there not fitting perfectly. Why is this happening? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hmm, if they fit together perfectly before then they should after as well. You need to push the foiled pieces together pretty hard to get them to sit nice and tight again.
Can I over lap two layers of foil to make a thicker one if needed ?
Like say if I need 3/4 but only have 1/2
I would not recommend it. That layer is going to create a weak point. The only time layering is ok is to do a very small split patch or something. The foil needs to be "suctioned" to the glass when it's soldered in a sense. So layering foil would be like painting on top of walls covered in clingwrap. Does that make sense?
@@MakenzieHallie yes absolutely! Thank you💛 your videos are so helpful for a newbie like me!
Wow, what some beautiful hands! What size (width) foil did you use? Also, are you not interested in getting/using a foiling machine? I new and want to get it right. Excellent video, beautiful work!
Thank you so much! And it depends on the piece I'm making or glass type for size foil! And I have absolutely seen them, but I am more of a do it all with my hands type, even down to my stencils or designs! Thank you for watching!!!

Looking on line for this stuff is too confusing for an old lady like me. Even looked into getting a foil machine, but I haven't even gotten my feet wet yet with cutting one piece of glass, lol. ALSO - found Venture by 3M on ebay for sale - is that a product you've used, okay to buy?
ohhhh ok I'm sorry I didnt realize you were looking for a specific, directional answer. OK SO, because your just starting I would absolutely suggest getting 1/4 inch foil, while your still learning to keep all those edges even. The thinner it gets, the harder it gets. So those numbers is based on inch. So something like 7/32 is going to be super thin, giving BARELY any overlap over the edge of your glass. As far as a foiler, I wouldnt even bother to be honest. Unless your not ever going to cut shapes besides a perfect square or circle, it's not really helpful. Having your roll of foil on your desk is just as easy, I think anyway. Of coarse alot of this is all going to be personal preference, as you get to know your own technique! As far as glass, I NEVER buy online. From big retailers anyway. After shipping and there inflated prices, its absolutely insane. I would definitely give google a visit and see if you have any local stained glass stores, not only because of selection, but the owner I'm sure will be willing to share some knowledge! Hope this helps!
@@MakenzieHallie Pardon me for interrupting here. I’ve lived in three different cities since I started doing SG and I located a local stained glass artist in all three places and they all have sold supplies to me. They’re always buying large amounts bc they use so much, so it’s no problem to buy from them. The one I buy from now actually sells and has a large selection of glass and supplies,...anything I could ever need as a hobbyist.
Yes, if you can locate a store in person, thats great!
I made a sign it's about 8 inches by 6 inches and it's unstable how do I make it more stable? It says dog on top and days on the bottom?
Is it a solid piece set within glass or is it free floating letters?
@@MakenzieHallie I'm adding glass in between now they were free floating .... Lesson learned
Ok yes, its tough to say without seeing it but generally with unstable pieces like that is when you need to add backup strength. Even copper reinforcement strips for stained glass.
So the wee little pieces are not grinded….. and so problem having the foil stick to the glass
I love your videos . New to this and pretty much got it down except the foiling. Can no get it right. Frustrated!!!
Hi how are you today darling you look very gorgeous wow ilove your very long nailsyou do agreat job with them very long nails you are great stay safe james t cipriani
Instead of adding a ‘filler’ piece of foil, why not used a wider piece of foil? (Coming from a True Beginner)
