Wow Spielberg looked just like Steve Jobs
Sort of, but also like William Friedkin.
"The night of the ceremony I was playing jazz in New York. I remember playing “Jackass Blues,” a tune made famous by King Oliver. I used my gig as an excuse, but I wouldn’t have gone if I was free. I don’t like the idea of awards for artistic things. They’re not created for the purpose of competition; they’re made to fulfill an artistic itch and hopefully entertain. I’m not interested in any group’s pronunciamento as to which film is the best film of the year, or the best book, or the Most Valuable Player. I don’t want to get into this and waste my typewriter ribbon, because then I’ll have to get that guy over who changes it and feed him. Suffice it to say, Oscar night, I played the blues best I could, went home, went to sleep, and the next morning on page one of the Times noticed down below we had won four Oscars including Best Picture. I reacted like I reacted to the news of JFK’s assassination."
[From: Woody Allen, Apropos of Nothing, Autobiography]
Awesome Woody
According to an interview, it wasn't until he read the New York Times the next day that Allen found out about his triumph.
that's hard to believe, Diane Keaton was there celebrating and surely they must have talked...
@@swopnilkalika7339 Remember, no cell phones. Woody was performing with his band that night. Probably didn't check messages when he got home, probably just didn't give a damn.
@@artlover1477 truly admirable, i don't understand people who care about this bs.
Nobody mentions how young Lucas and Spielberg look or how the latter was off camera for like half the time.
The reality is that, even when some people misjudges him based on a lie, he is the most complete and genious creator in Hollywood history.
True that. People should do their research before drawing conclusions based on false allegations.
Completely agree.
Unless you're Woody Allen or Dylan Farrow, you'll never know for sure.
@@dllemm I'm sure of the law. And twice the law said he's innocent. If we continue to go above the law, we will end up in authoritarianism based purely on prejudice. You can see in history where these kinds of things led, it is not that difficult to understand.
@Ryan Akwar Don't take it to literally. Of course there are others. But he is one of the 10 greatest for sure (also, the others aren't writers as he is).
"I have no regard for that kind of ceremony. I just don't think they know what they're doing. When you see who wins those things -- or who doesn't win them -- you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is."
-Woody Allen
Cicely is so graceful and charming.
I love Woody Allen and I love his films. He is such a great director.
"And the winner is... Woody Allen!"
George Lucas: "What? How can you do this? This is outrageous! It's unfair! How can you create Star Wars, and not have an Oscar?"
"TAKE A SEAT, young Lucas."
Amazin Josh
Totally deserved! Woody Allen is such a great director, and Annie Hall is a masterpiece!
@@nikolabronzic7386 Lucas is better
@@akhi-sama lol, in no way is he. In fact he never ever directed anything mildly valuable (not even his own Star Wars disastrous re-mixes) and Star Wars was a really cool movie but not much else.
Over time Manhattan has been his best movie but not Annie Hall. anyway Star wars won six o seven oscars of the academy in 1978.Lucas did not imagine it, i am sure. Woody Allen is a great director too.
@@Richard-lw2gr only technical awards. I'm pretty sure Lucas imagined it since the technical aspect was Star Wars' strong suit.
2:04 woody is so badass... he just wins the oscar he still keeps it cool
LOL... yeah, I wouldn't play poker against that guy.
That's not even woody Allen lol

So many arguments here - Star Wars and Annie Hall are both masterpieces of their genres, deal with it.
Give Lucas credit for taking his loss in stride - he looked genuinely happy for Woody.
Many would argue Star Wars was made in the editing room. Marcia Lucas gets a big credit and award for that.
@@aliensoup2420 Yeah every film is made in the editing room. No difference here.
@@yospidey0078 But the difference is Annie Hall is well directed, and star wars is not.
@@KydzPlays star wars is superior period
@@Rj-dw6lr George Lucas was a visionary with great ideas but he is not particularly great director. This is well known about him based on what actors that worked with him say. It was team of great editors that make New Hope successful and he didn't direct Empire or Jedi. Academy often chooses poorly but they did a right pick here with Woody Allen.
Allen has always been absent during these awards except for the time he came to present that New York tribute at the Oscars in 2002.
@cody hoskins it was so fitting that Allen attended the Oscars that year, and his speech was terrific! Some of the people in the audience had to look around to see if it was okay to give Allen a standing ovation...those people drive me nuts! Some celebrities have a difficult time thinking for themselves!
@@paullemon5154 back then ? Why?
He already had those accusations in 2002?
Forgive my ignorance
@@ignacioclerici5341 he was proven innocent by the jury but the Farrows didn't want to admit their defeat
What I liked the most to see the nomination for best director 1977 was to see the best directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas creative geniuses and best friends
Cicely Tyson is a timeless beauty
1:53 poor George
Look at him look how sad and dead inside he is
It looks like Spielberg mouthed the words, "I love you, Amy" as in Amy Irving.
ahhaahaha he didnt want to go to LA to pick up the oscar
4 of them O.O well three really, since one was Diane Keaton's performance
Stop laughing about him you perverts
Master Allen: the greatest living filmmaker in the world. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤
What is he getting away with? He never commited any crimes.
Who said he's getting away from anything? He just doesn't like the idea of awards, and comparing two or more pieces of art.
How happy Diane Keaton was!!! I love Woody Allen and Diane Keaton!
She was happy and amused.
William Freidkin should've been in there somewhere for 'Sorcerer.' Bad title, disappointing box office = no nomination other than Best Sound. Doesn't diminish that it's a genius film.
Regardless of your personal opinions about his character, he makes great films. I consider myself lucky to live in his lifetime.
🤨 I know this comment was from a decade ago, but that is the weirdest thing I've ever heard in my life.
@@YokozunaNumber1 I’ve seen all his movies in theaters since the was 16. I’m glad I grew up in a time when he was releasing films regularly. That’s all he was saying.
Folks, what you need to understand, is this.
Annie Hall was a groundbreaking movie, and sure Star wars was too, but Annie Hall was cutting edge and innovative, and it's also an adult movie, and star wars is more for kids or younger audiences, and the oscars prefer adult movies.
That's a major reason that probably helped him get the Oscar here.
If the Academy preferred Adult movies Taxi Driver should've won in 1977 over Rocky
@@deadking8224 you're absolutely right. Rocky was really a very surprising win, as those kind of movies usually don't win best picture at the oscars.
@@seanpanigel5494 Damn, I always thought it was the opposite. I thought Rocky was a kind of Oscar-friendly movie and they were pretty biased against films which had dark adult themes like Taxi Driver
@@deadking8224 well, in a sort of way it's true, films like Taxi Driver are not the Oscar cup of tea, but so are films like Rocky.
The Oscar cup of tea are your typical forgettable Drama(uhm uhm Coda, uh uhm green book, uhm uhm Nomadland).
Films like Taxi Driver would have never won best picture, but for most of the time, so do blockbuster mainstream films like Rocky.
A very certain type of Dramas(which I call them Oscar Dramas), are the ones that usually win. Sometimes there are exceptions(like Silence of the lambs), but usually those are the go to.
@@deadking8224. Actually, if any movie was likely to beat Rocky, it was Network.
Woody Allen did amazing job Directing Annie Hall.
Sci fi movie Master Spielberg and lucas compete together but both lost to comedy movie master, what a historic moment!
Those five nominated directors went to film school, have a knack for it, studied it very well, practised and know what they are doing.
Woody went for less than a semester 😂
Please upload his win for Hannah and Her Sisters!
I would have loved to see him receive the award
Woody has stated that Bob Hope's schtick was an inspiration for his many movie characters. Fitting to have him there.
Wow...Annie Hall beat some stiff competition.
Sorry, I would disagree. But Woody is the greatest.
It's not a prejudice towards "big commercial." It's really about plot and theme. But remember, Star Wars was STILL nominated.
@monteluzGC Woody was playing the Clarinet at the old Michael's Pub in Manhattan that night. King Vidor was a real giant who never really got his due. Cicely?? Well. See if you can find an old 60's show "EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE" and you'll know her brilliance.
Werner Herzog was nominated a few years ago for Best Documentary for "Encounters at the End of the World".
Diane Keaton had just won Best Actress for the same movie. Woody had just won also Best Original Screenplay. And Annie Hall won Best Picture too.
Woody is such a classic.
Cicely Tyson was about 50 here. Wow
Spielberg says "I love you Amy". According to his unauthorized biography by John Baxter "Amy Irving had learned sign language for the movie Voices and had taught Spielberg a few a words including the phrase "I love you Amy". During his ritual close up as the best director award was announced, he had agreed to sign this message to her, but (presumably) lost his nerve and instead mouthed the words silently into the lens."
This is exactly what I was looking for.
Bob Hope presents Cicely Tyson who presents King Vidor %•#presenterception
You should see Annie Hall. It's a terrific film!
She looks stunning esp the hair very regal
Woah. The original Star wars deserves no comparison to Michael Bay, regardless of how you may dislike George Lucas's later career
Michael Bay???? I'd rather see Woody Allen win over Michael Bay's garbage!
@@gerrypeet4861. That was a joke, right? I’m thinking so.
2:15 My God. I started to tear up. Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood.
Yeah its sad he killed her and got away with it! That's hollyweird for ya.
"Your on the oscars, we dont grant you an award"
Lucas: what? How could you do this? This is outrageous! Its unfair! How could you make Star Wars and not get an Oscar?!
"Take a seat young lucas"
RIP Cecily Tyson
Best acceptance speech ever!
Woody Allen is not a superficial man, he doesnt give a f about the oscars
@@ignacioclerici5341especially back then. He’s a New York guy, he could care less about Hollywood.

RIP Cicely Tyson 🙏
Spielberg should have won Director, Star Wars should have won Picture and Allen should have won screenplay - which he did. Just my own preference but hey, it's only an awards ceremony, all these films and directors are great in their own respect. Great year, great lineup.
Tommy Daly Close Encounters for Best Picture and Lucas for Best Director and we're good.
Close Encounters wasn’t THAT great.
Close encounters was the absolutely best picture that year and Spielberg should have won best director hands down!!
Cicely so beautiful and ladylike.
Thank you for doing this.
I love Cicely's dress!!!!!!!!!!!!
@WaCoproductions The Academy has made a lot of decisions I disagree with. But I will say that they made the right decision in this case.
Cicely tyson is brilliant and shold be oscar nominated as Best Supporting for her role in The Help...they gave one to judi dench for an 8 minutes part in Shakespeare in Love.....Cicely Tyson is brilliant
Cicely Tyson looks like a model here
Annie Hall and Close Encounters were both worthy of this award.
Look at Cicely Tyson!! She looks so great and young :-)
Star Wars for Best Picture that year, but most could have achieved what Lucas achieved as the film's DIRECTOR given the material and determination. Spielberg and Allen arguably reached greater heights with more difficult subject matter and intricate plotting. Could Lucas have directed Annie Hall to the same standard?
Cicely tyson is brilliant and should be oscar nominated this year as Best Supporting fActress for her role in The Help...they gave one to judi dench for an 8 minutes part in Shakespeare in Love.....Cicely Tyson is brilliant...sad to see Natalie Wood with Robert Wagner sitting behind Diane Keaton just three short years away from her tragic and unneccessary drowning
I think it was expected that Annie Hall would win the big prizes(Actress, Bets Picture and Director), and Star Wars would get the technical awards - and so it came to pass.
Interesting seeing two good friends(and “movie brats”) - Spielberg and Lucas both nominated for the same category in that year. I think Spielberg had felt that he should have been nominated for “Jaws”. I think Lucas doesn’t pay too much attention to the Oscars compared to Spielberg.
You gotta give it to woody. He never gave a shit about awards.
Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood 2:17
Which music playing in the video after saying Woodys name? nice score
Cicely tyson is brilliant and shold be oscar nominated as Best Supporting for her role in The Help...they gave one to judi dench for an 8 minutes part in Shakespeare in Love.....Cicely Tyson is brilliant...sad to see Natalie Wood with Robert Wagner sitting behind Diane Keaton just three short years away from her tragic and unneccessary drowning
It's amazing to think that today Woody Allen's name is mud. But back then he was the epitome of hip coolness. Even snubbing the Oscars was cool.
Cicely Tyson R.I.P.
What was Steven yelling? : I love you, Amy!
Star Wars Episode 4 A new hope wins
George Lucas should have won for Star Wars.
The world wasn't ready for that yet. Despite how well it did, you still had too many people in Hollywood especially who thought it wasn't Oscar material. Plus, Hollywood and George kinda hate each other lmfao
Stunning Cicely Tyson, RIP
King vidor looks like if he wants to tell sth but he doesn't
I wasn't aware of that. I'm guessing they decided to finally give him a nomination after there were some rumblings that Grizzly Man didn't receive one. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
@OnParr Wow, good call.
Cicely Tyson!💖💖💖
George and Steven let me hear you squeeaaal.
Annie Hall has great directing.
Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood in the audience ,fancy a late night swim anyone?
jacob freemans LMFAO!.
2:16 Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood.
@nmarr9 He doesn't believe in it - so why should he turn up, regardless of how "good they are to him"? That's not arrogant, it's just consistent.
the awkward moment when starwars doesnt win best director...
No Star Wars has ever won best director or best actor or best movie or best screenplay. Just technical achievements.
Because star wars wasn't that good
because it doesn't deserve it
yep, star wars it is not the best of the world
@@CalebKepleyMusic it was amazing
Woody deserved this and all his awards 💯
Wow ..who is this beautiful lady😍❤️
So someone came on stage to introduce someone who introduced someone else who announced the winner who didn't show up. Seems like he made a wise choice.
2:02 - You can tell Lucas is a Woody Allen fan.
Uhm, this was in 1978, Allen and Farrow were not even dating back then, and Mia Farrow was never his wife. They were in a long term relationship, but they didn't even live together when Allen got involved with Farrow's adopted adult daughter, when their relationship was on the verge of collapse. The heart wants what the heart wants and in this life nobody is a saint and nobody should be judged.
Woody Allen may have been playing Jazz clarinet that night
Yes, in the same way it spawned almost every big budget film made since then
Lynch should have been nominated and also win
cheese productions He should have won for Mulholland Drive
@@scifinerd17 of course he shoulf have, mulholland drive is his magnum opus, but he also deserved to win for eraserhead and maybe blue velvet

I'm only here for Cicely's beauty.
2:04
Oh! Allen
Aroynd 2:05 check out the reactions from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. One takes "defeat" in with grace and good humour, the other not so much.
Lucas was nominated for three Oscars at this show. And he lost all three to Woody. Lol.
@@roccoz2231and ?

Wow. This is a great clip!
I can understand Annie Hall winning Best Picture and Original Screenplay, but Lucas was robbed of this award.
Big deal - he's got 4 billion $ instead.

i'm sure he waited till she was 18 and looks him up some of his other girlfriends were like 16 when he was 40
