Coastal Exploration UK | Push Netting at Hampton Pier, Herne Bay, Kent

  • This is a change to my normal sea fishing videos and instead I go push netting at Hampton to explore what other creatures are living in our seas.
    The push net is a great way to find out what species are breeding in the area and what food larger fish are feeding on.
    What you find on the sea bed changes from month to month and from beach to beach so its good to net different areas to get a general picture.
    This push netting session was probably the worst I have even done and I was shocked with how little I found. Perhaps the recent sewage dumping around the Kent coast has had a detrimental affect on the marine life but I really just hope it was a poor tide and conditions.
    I hope you enjoy the video and please like and subscribe to the channel for more videos like this in the future.

    My how times have changed, back in the mid to late 1950s I used to live in Herne Bay and used to push net regularly. You'd get masses of shrimp, one or two passes in 2ft 6ins of water was all that was needed for a really good meal for the family, they're delicious and you only have to remove the head before eating them. There were two commercial push netters who regularly fished the Bay they made a living out of selling them, and other sea food. Those rocks at the end of the pier also held large stocks of big edible brown crabs and there were plenty of varieties of flat fish to be caught from a dinghy just off shore. By the way those limpets do make good eating as do the other type.

    • @gsp
      @gsp  Před 2 lety +1

      Wow! Well I'd think you'd struggle to make a living today around that area. To be honest I've never had such a poor push netting session and I doubt very much that you'll find any decent edibles in those rocks now. It's sad to see how much damage has been caused by pollution, over fishing etc.
      I might have to give the limpets a taste test😂

    Thanks for the videos, I am currently laid up with Covid, so a very welcome diversion. I use a push net at Littlestone near Dungeness, and it is fascinating. Apart from a real haul of common shrimp, I have released 40 or 50 little slip sole in a session, swimming crabs that try eat you and even a few perfect little baby Thornbacks maybe ten inches across. It is like fish soup!

    • @gsp

    Brown shrimps are good to eat , couple of mins in salted boiling water then hold head and tail and bite the middle bit , shell on don't try to peel them .

    Quite fascinating! I just this year started shrimping in local rock pools - very little sand here. Had some great but hard-won results. Getting to know the best type of pools and overhangs where the shrimps inhabit. Not as common as I hoped but okay once you suss them out. Looking forward to some great live shrimp fishing this Summer!

    Those slipper limpets make fantastic bass and bream baits load up a hook fire it out and the bass find them quickly 👌 they are a great bait from bream on a boat as well tip off the hook with a winkle or 2 to help keep them on they are small and soft like fishing with muscles but make a decent bait ! Best to find and use them after a storm has put a wreck of them up on the beach

    The guy by the rockd will be netting a couple of prawns from under the rocks, I push netted where you are in august last year and had hundreds of tiny what looked like soles and someother flattie species, and I mean hundreds! it was incredible. perhaps May is too early?

    • @gsp

      Those Shrimp are edible but I would be cautious about the sewage release around the UK. If there is any of that in your area then I wouldn't touch them👍
