- Cantata Herr Jesu Christ, wahr Mensch und Gott - recorded here for All of Bach with Hans-Christoph Rademann - cites and paraphrases a funeral hymn by the theologian Paul Eber, a friend of Luther. A funeral may seem a gloomy occasion, but Eber weaves the promise of eternal life throughout his hymn. This cantata formed a grand finale to Bach’s second year in Leipzig. His plan for that year was to write a new cantata every week based on a chorale, and in the opening chorus of BWV 127 the melody is indeed heard in the sopranos, true to tradition. But the instruments answer with their own chorale: Christe, du Lamm Gottes, Luther’s hymn that is often regarded as the German Agnus Dei.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser kompakten und fein komponierten Kirchenkantate mit gut harmonisierten Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Chors und herrlichen Stimmen dreier genialen Solisten sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockensemble im veränderlichen Tempo und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Erstaunlich, dass solch eine authentische Tradition der deutschen Barockmusik in den Niederlande so perfekt konserviert ist. Alles ist wunderbar!

Assurément une de mes cantates préférées, géniale de bout en bout. Une toute petite réserve sur le tempo du chœur d’entrée, que je trouve un peu trop rapide. J’avoue préférer le tempo plus lent de Leonhardt, suggérant la pesanteur des tracas de l’existence, qui pourtant n’empêche pas le chrétien d’aller stoïquement de l’avant… jusqu’à la mort (récitatif et air de soprano, apaisé et confiant).
