  • Ontario Rat 1 Aus-8 vs Ontario Rat 1 D2 for the edge retention heavy weight belt. Long overdue comparison here and its settled. I didnt know how this would come out and there were some surprises along the way.
    Did D2 reign supreme?
    Did Aus-8 take the crown?
Did aliens conspire to take over?

I left the video in real time so everyone could see exactly how much each one cut for the test. Both were sharpened enough times to get rid of any fatigued steel.

You should look at Cedric and Ada’s comparison. One test can produce an anomaly. Overall AUS8 is a lesser steel, just how much is up for debate. That said, I have not found a reason to upgrade my AUS8 RAT1, but were I to buy a new one, I would go for the D2 model. It is in fact a harder steel and absolutely will hold a working edge longer. The good news is the Ontario RAT1 is a great design steel notwithstanding.

For whatever reason, I'm just seeing this video now. I am subbed and yes I've clicked the bell. I know CZcams is censoring political type videos like crazy, but how is a video like yours "controversial"? This is getting ridiculous.
Anyway, although I like D2, AUS8 is highly underrated and dismissed as junk steel. IF it is done right, it is nowhere near as bad as people seem to think. I have a rat in both steels, and admittedly have never done a head to head test, but have never been disappointed in either one.
Thank you for all you do for the knife community! It's good to know your knife steels capabilities and limits, but it also needs to be taken in context of what the knife is designed for, and how a person uses their knife. If you bought it for work, these tests are highly important, if you bought it to use as a casual light duty cut your apple and open your mail type of carry, not quite as important, although still good to know just what you are spending your money on. Putting a different steel on a knife raises the price, but does not always raise the performance. This is a classic example of that.I appreciate greatly what you and a few others are doing with all these tests.

A thing with the softer steels. Is that if they loose their edge slightly, it's usually just the edge Rolling over, so After a little use , just give the edge a little tickle up on a butcher's steel,
This will realign the edge, and will bring knife back to really sharp again. And when this doesn't work any more. Then it's time to actually sharpen the knife again. For this reason I would choose aus8, over D2. And Aus 8 easier to sharpen , and more stain resistance.

So is D2 harder but not a tough as aus8 abrasive wise? So what I'm saying is will d2 gut more wood but less cardboard? I wouldn't think so if D2 is harder to sharpen supposedly. I do think my aus8 seems great and pretty sharp straight out of the box. I say pretty sharp only because I'm use to mirrored edges. It's really sharp straight out of the box and only a few swipes on a steel it'll do a smooth shave easy. Been considering getting a D2 but I'm not sure now after watching this even though others seem to get almost double the performance in reviews cutting rope from the D2. Trying to relate on what's happened here? Is there a possibility you got a, seemingly very isolated incident if so, dud D2 that wasn't hardened as good as others? Or is it possible the rat is so popular you may have gotten a fake D2 model somehow? Any ideas on the possibilities for the outcome being so different from others experiences? Thanks for the video

Between Steve and myself we have tested 6 or 7 different D2 Rat 1 and 2. This one I used in the video has been the best so far. I have on here now on loan that kept chipping on the owner and 3 edges later its chipping for me as well. It also goes dull very fast compared to other D2 I've tested. I know there us a huge hype over D2 and many think it's good but for me most of what I've used and tested hasn't been good at all. Lots of the import China D2 doesn't do much better than 8cr13 and I'll have a video soon showing just that. I'll give an example of 2 I've already tested, a Kershaw 8cr13 and a Steel Will D2. The Kershaw did 84 feet working edge for 8cr13 and the Steel Will D2 did 85 feet working edge. That's less than a 1% difference. As far as wood goes D2 isn't something I use on wood so I can't say. Performance will depend on use, for normal day to day edc of most people Aus-8 will do well. Heat treat is everything and on paper D2 should be more wear resistant than Aus-8 but Ontario does a very good heat treat on their Aus-8 and not so much on the D2.
