  • I was able to purchase the two radios I have been waiting on for several months. The new Wouxun KG-UV9GX GMRS radio and the new Wouxun KG-UV9PX Ham version both from Better Safe Radio. I got some local channels in there and will do some distance tests out on the road. Lets see how these do in filed tests while in Denver and the Houston areas.
    I have started a crowd fund account for donations to the channel and memberships if desired as well as a Patreon account for membership as well. Definitely no obligation to donate but if you would like to see exciting new radios and equipment for product reviews a donation or membership would go along way in providing the monies to get these items. Once I do thorough product review and some tutorial videos of an item I will be hosting giveaways of the items through this CZcams channel.

    You are the first person I’ve found who has done a little more in depth discussion of the UV9GX. I’ve just received mine and have been spending a lot of time figuring out how to use it. The manual that came with it was pretty brief in detail although it was recommended I use the manual that comes with the UV9P as they are pretty similar. I and many others would appreciate a short tutorial on the UV9GX , the basic functions, imputing repeaters, simplex frequencies and saving them into memory. As far as I can tell no one else on CZcams has done this and I’m guessing Better Safe Radio has sold quite a few. Enjoy your videos very much!

      Actually I am selling the KG-UV9GX as we speak. I unfortunately don’t have any GMRS repeaters or simplex users anywhere near my house. I have to go into the Denver area about 2 hours from my house to really use it right now. I feel that I can drop down a few models and get a cheaper one for the amount of use I would ever get out of it. Asking $170 for it including a heavy duty antenna and I’ll pay for shipping. It will have the stock antenna and the programming software is free on the Better Safe Radio website but you’ll need to get the programming cable from them or Amazon. Ham-Solo K0FYR WRMV759

      Actually, I kind of agree with you. The only disclaimer there is that the specific GMRS radios are considered FCC Part 95 radios and technically the only authorized radios to normally be used on GMRS frequencies other than the cheaper FRS radios that share some of the same channels. Amateur Radio being Part 97 don’t qualify under the same FCC rule. I’m not a stickler on that at all but since people watch my content I have to use them that way. Ham-Solo K0FYR WRMV759

I’m looking for a second but not sure if it’s worth the price jump for the uv9gx for the second since chirp allows me to listen in on pretty much the same as the uv9gx. • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo  Před rokem

      Well the screen on the KG-UV9GX doesn’t work the best in direct sunlight. However, the receiver and transmitter are superheterodyne and is better than a software defined radio like the KG-935G. I have a uv9px ham with gmrs tx frequencies unlocked. For tx on the GMRS band, how does the performance of that 5/8th wave antenna compare to a 15' 2m/70cm whip from Diamond or Nagoya? (trying to determine if it's worth it to buy yet another antenna)

    • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo  Před rokem +1

      I think the 5/8 wave would be a slight improvement however, if you’ve also unlocked the higher frequency GMRS channels they are a little more outside of the typical 70cm area and you may not have as good a signal with the 15” whip antenna. With a 5/8 wave telescopic antenna you could shorten section to 5/8 wave also on the GMRS frequencies and that may help. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    • @Gruuvin1
      @Gruuvin1 Před rokem +1

      @@Ham-Solo thanks for your response. Yes i was thinking that, all other things equal, an antenna tuned specifically for GMRS would likely perform better than one tuned for 70cm... but then, since I have a 15" whip tuned for 2m/70cm, I'm not sure if that really short 5/8 wave, tuned for GMRS, would outperform it (different antenna technology). I have ordered a Nagoya 771G whip tuned for GMRS.... and now I wonder if THAT would outperform a 5/8 wav shorty. So much mystery with these things. Bigger=better? I dunno.

    How do I know if I want to get into gmrs radios? Stupid question, but seems like if I am not fire/rescue or police or retired and able to scan or listen all day, there may not be much use for me? Only reason I know of it, is because my father in law was a ham guy and I helped sell all of his stuff when he passed.

    • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo  Před rokem +2

      Well GMRS is not specifically for any particular entity. Actually police or fire do not use GMRS at all. It is basically a step between little bubble wrap radios, CB radios, and then full blown amateur radio. GMRS tucks away in between those and allows both handheld and mobile vehicle mounted radios which can transmit from 5 watts to 50 watts which is legally much higher than CB or the little bubble wrap radios allow. It is used mainly by vehicle clubs like trail-riding Jeep clubs and event staff to have decent range and be able to transmit with minimal licensing requirements. Preppers also seem to like it because it has decent power and range and will work in a grid down situation where other forms of communication may no longer be functioning like cell phone service and land lines during tornados or hurricanes. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    • @SeanFlaherty
      @SeanFlaherty Před rokem

      It's good four outdoor activities (hiking, etc.) that are not near cell towers. Think of how people used CB radio (car to car communication), that's what GMRS is for. Also emergencies when cell phones don't work. It is also repeater capable, so that gives it extra range/utility.

    • @TheRayDog
      @TheRayDog Před rokem +1

      View GMRS as ham-light or CB-pro. A license is needed, way fewer people on it and way better behaved than CB. That said, the point of radio is to talk to new people and enjoy the fact you're using radio waves to do it. It's that simple. Unless you get tickled by the medium, it isn't going to grab you.
