Grizzly stalking moose calves, Denali National Park, Alaska

- Shortly before sunset in Denali National Park, a moose defends her two calves from a hungry grizzly in the Spring. This scene played out for about an hour. Recorded with a Canon DSLR.
Update (December 2021): This video was up for a number of years before I noticed it was starting to get large amounts of views so I'll address a couple of the comments I've seen below. I had changed out the audio when i put these clips together due to some people talking nearby during much of the encounter. I didn't have video editing software knowledge at the time and I agree the volume is much too loud. Unfortunately, I'm unable to adjust it now without replacing the video and losing the view count - sorry. For those wondering if the bear caught up to the moose calves - no, not while they were in sight. After the moose took the calves through the river, the bear lost the scent and was running in the opposite direction as the encounter ended. So thanks for watching. Despite the age of this video, I'm glad some people are still enjoying the moment.
Some of the footage from this encounter was used in National Geographic's World's Deadliest Animals TV series ("Lady Killers" - original air date October 2013).
I love the way the grizzly always starts acting so innocent whenever the moose turns around to stare at it!
It's so hilarious.
That is the funniest comment I read. Animals are so smart and we don't appear to appreciate it
Love how the minute Mama turns around, Mr. Grizzly is trying to eat nonchalantly....as if to say, "Hey, I am just eating my lunch".
1:35 the bear acting like it’s looking at something else and just so preoccupied by the grass 🤣 reminds me of when you’re cheating in class and lock eyes with your teacher so you turn your head away and pretend to be “thinking hard” 🤣😂
Crazy days in school. The grizzly pretends as though nothing is in her mind
Thanks for the update: I was hoping the scent would be lost - clever mama moose taking her babies to the shallow crossing.
I love how the bear would try to act all nonchalantly like he’s looking on the ground when the moose would look back at her lol
It might look silly but it actually works sometimes, believe it or not. Looks like this wasn't one of them tho unless the bear got one of the calves after the camera stopped.
Awesome footage, thank you for dubbing the water audio, I have watched other similar videos with people talking in the background, very annoying. Thank you for the recent update regarding previous comments.
The moose looks back and the bear looks away like "Don't mind me, I'm just digging over here"
mom was smart to take her calves into the waters so the bear loses their trail.
Thank you for not putting some dumb music on this beautiful wildlife video
It's interesting, mother bears are said to be the most protective of their young of all the animals. However, mother moose are no joke either!
Such beautiful animals in this clear footage thank you so much!
baby moose "whats for dinner Mom?" Mama moose"you are if you don't keep up"
Lived in alaska for 3 years, seen a few bears and enough moose for a lifetime. when I was there moose were almost as plentiful as rabbits and squirrels🏔🤔
So what ?
Beautiful footage !...and no frivolous music or "Oh no !", a correct title and thumbnail, and a short and clear description...you even credited the camera !...man, you must be from another planet...unfortunately, I can only give you 1 like, sorry...a million thanks !...
...and for those of you planning to go on a safari and make a video, watch and learn...watch and learn !...
Nice of you to say-thanks
absolutely good observation about this bear-moose interaction
I feel like this video could be in the desert and that water sound would still be playing in the back round.
BTW: Great footage. Some of the best I've ever seen.
Incredible footage. Great camera work! Those commenting on the ineffectualness of the moose have obviously never been charged by one.

Thanks Jeanette
Had to be a very young bear. A full grown Grizzly would not run from a female moose.
@@imjinrat2325 I saw a video of a female grizzly wrestle right through the antlers of a reindeer that tried to stand its ground. The bear backed away several times, but finally charged right through the weapons, overpowered the reindeer, and quickly killed it. The bear in this video is a subadult, recently independent from its mother. Moose mothers have to run from mature bears, or they are killed. If a big bear separates the calf from the mother, there is nothing she can do to save it. Trying too sincerely could mean she becomes part of the meal, too. Thus, moose calves are a major source of bear protein. In Yellowstone, brown bears are the primary cause of bison deaths.
@@Nagy50Magyar Geez I forgot all about this video. Watching it again I found it interesting that the moose headed to where people are, probably hoping it would be a place of safety.
The bear be like don’t worry about me I’m not buying I’m just checking
When the Mother Moose and her young at the end crossed the Rest stop road and the creek, the Grizzly Bear was still trying to sniff them out crossing the road and the creek himself. He wasn't giving up just yet. If the Grizzly was a massive adult male he probably would of got one small moose...This grizzly looked like just a juvenile to me . Thank's for the upload.
it's funny that when she looks he just sniffing something :)
The bear pretends he is foraging for plants, my bad.
I was looking for your comment Richard Michael the bear was acting like he was eating grass every time the mother moose turned around now that was funny
😂😂😂😂😂
read my mind hahaha
The Grizz was like "don't mind me, just looking for berries, nothing to see here. "
🗣Charles Ritter yo you silly as shit I needed that laugh tonight thanks
@@baltimorebred2129 you're welcome Amber.
hehehe nice one dude! lmao
You can never just enjoy a beautiful day outside with your calves when you're a moose.
Nature Alaska is so beautiful!
It's a bear that's not easy to find food.
Thank you for your precious video.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year dear friend!🎄
Thank you very much!
Bear: I'm gonna get me one of those calves. Moose: I'm gonna stomp that bear to death. Bear: I think I'll go fishing
I was just there 2 weeks ago...We were told all the bears were up higher in Aug. What a sight you saw, thanks for posting. At mile 15 we kept seeing plenty of moose and caribou.
to think this was 8 years ago.
The mother 💕💕😥😩
Ннндаа, только мать может это!
What a idea, brilliant animal and mother.
Good
Moose too smart , walks calves through stream to hide scent . Bear needs to pick up its game, next level.
Very nice video! Well done. I wonder how big that grizzly is, because that moose looks positively gigantic!!
All the best!
That moose went Mama Bear on that grizzly.
Damn fine film! A rare CZcams find.
1:08 "oh nothing, just looking for some blueberries..."
🤣

LOL, exactly what I was thinking.
बपदक
Haha I thought same thing
Can we just all appreciate the appropriate background sounds
I love how the bear pretends to play in the grass when the Mother turns around. Lol.
Congratulations on getting to see this marvel!
An Alaskan rest stop: a toilet, a grizzly bear, and a moose...
Ilyaans
Well in the french riviera rest stop you'll get a toilet, a yacht and Brigitte Bardot. Much danger in sight as well 😎
Imagine getting out from the resrtoom only see an angry Moose on one side & a hungry bear on the other. FML!
Brilliant camera work, how did I you keep up with the action!
Moose have really long legs which help them to run fast, up to 56km/h over short distances.
In Minnesota: Predation was consistently the leading cause of calf mortality during the study.
During 2013−14 and 2014−15, wolf and black bear predation accounted for 65 percent and 16 percent of calf mortality, respectively.
During 2015−16 and 2016−17, 69 percent and 15 percent of the calf mortality was attributable to wolves and bears.
Bear: don't be Afraid,i m not eating your baby just eating grass
Spectacular footage!
What awesome footage this person captured.
Incredible footage. Great camera work!!!
Thank you
Thank you for showing this 😮
scary bear! imagine a starving hungry bear stalking you like that
The water sound is so relaxing 😴😴😴😴
Notice how that moose is bigger than a Ford ranger
The bear's reactions as an ambush predator are hysterical he's like "what? who me? Noway!!! I wasn't following you" ...lol
That's what I was noticing.

Suddenly it becomes clear why moose are so damned big.
Thanks!
What a brave mother
Swear when the moose looks at the bear it pretends it's not even following them lmao
Fantastic photography. I'm surprised that the bear didn't take on the moose.
Thank you
I wonder if he ever got one calf in the end. Grizzlies are very determined and patient if they want something bad enough. He will wear the mother eventually out and separate the calfs from her...
Not that day.
@@FloridaImages Glad to hear that.
Thanks. It was at the Savage River, close to the ranger hut where the main accessible road ends (mile 15?).
Are you alive bro😭
bear is like "just minding my own business....beautiful day isnt it"
A lot of people in the comments are underestamating the mother... A mother moose is one of the worst mothers to piss of, 'causke if you can't do something that relly scares her, she will hunt who ever killed her baby till she can kill them. The only reason she don't relly hurts the Bear is becuase he hasen't touched the baby yet.
Lunar,
You are too optimistic with the mother moose ability to defend her calves. I have seen a video of a black bear snatched a calf away from the mother moose. The mother moose offered very little resistance and left her baby for the bear to consume. That was a black bear, not even a brown bear. The sad reality is herbivores evolved to be eaten by predators. Even elephants are hunted by lions.
you can tell that bear was young, and intimidated by mom, glad it wasn't an experienced boar bear.
Grizzlies are far better adapted to taking down big prey than polar bears.
Absolutely
Fortunately it wasn't a 2,3 Meter moose bull either
@@paulschoneberg2955 a full grown grizzly will easily take down that too
@@paulschoneberg2955 a bull moose has it tails beneath it's leg when a boar Grizzly chases it lol 😂😂. What are you, butthurt?? Even this Grizzly can take that moose mom if he had a change of his mind.
How terrifying that would be to come jogging along just then. Alaska must be a most dangerous place.
C'est vraiment comique! Un grizzly qui prends la fuite! Un grizzly ! C'est vraiment une belle vidéo! Merci!
Mama Moose ain't messing around ❤️🌟
00:32 Bear is like.. "Morning Ma'am....beautiful day...Me, what am I doing? Oh nothing...Just hanging out by this bush...what kind of a tree is this? OH SHITTT!!!!!
I was wondering what the person who owned the truck was thinking, unless it belonged to the person with the camera. Imagine coming out of the washroom to that!
There's a vehicle parked there, so someone comes down the trail unaware and there's a moose wth babies and a grizzly..Wow
Good odds it's the photographer's vehicle.
Awesome footage. The bear does not yet realize he could have taken on mama. All she has are hooves and he has claws and teeth. When he gets older or realty hungry things will be different.
+Mike Misch one kick from those legs and you're dead. the bear won't risk taking damage. th hooves can penetrate the skin as easy as the claws.
Moose are more than capable of defending themselves from a grizzly. They weigh anywhere between 360kgs and 700kgs. If you get kicked by a moose in the head it will crush your skull and if it kicks you anywhere else it's going to result in broken bones and possibly internal bleeding. Don't be fooled.
@@Burritos4065 it looked kinda weak and lame... until it stood near the car. It's effing huge! I wouldn't want to risk getting smacked in the head by that giant if I was the bear, either.
That was a young grizzly, probably first year on its own. A mature boar and everything would be different.

Watching that was un bear able
Bear : Hey you guys , can I tag along .. I have nobody to play with , and I'm lonely and bored ..
Moose : Hey man , get on somewhere .. Ain't nobody called you ..
Good morning
Its just like human gangster behaviour : .....no no ....I am just picking blueberries - would never harm your babies... I am a vegetarian........
Mama moose got lucky - bear is still inexperienced.
What an experienced and brave mother -she possibly could pull both calves through their most dangerous toddler time.....
Most wonderful video -thank you for posting.

Grizzly " I just want to be friends with you! "
Mother calf " GTFO! "
Grilly Bear told me he was actually trying to adopt one of the cute Moose. Mum is just over reacting.
That mama moose makes a grizzly turn and run more than once, but the bear keeps tracking them, following their scent through the icy water and never quite giving up. He decided berries and worms just aren't enough for a hungry bear. Kind of sad, funny, and poignant as a tale of survival in the wild.
No berries in the spring, as common sense should have told you - if you had any.
@@larskullberg7292 Right, no berries in the spring. But that wasn't really my main point, was it? Lighten up on the hostility, Lars. You sound like a right-wing extremist on a rage.
@@surfwriter8461 I´m sorry. Please forgive me.

Excellent footage. Where in the park was this taken?
This reminds of a giraffe vs lion. I didn't know the giraffe knew karate.
Grizzly: yo how we keep bumping in to each other
You have to admire the beauty of the calves and the grizzly as they look to both be in healthy condition.
Mother moose persuaded the bear that fish taste better than moose steak.
That was incredible footage beautiful!!
Thank you
Absolutely beautiful footage.

This reminds me of walking along a road with 6 or 7 sheep following behind. Every time I looked round suddenly they were nibbling grass or admiring the view! Much happier outcome for me however - I feel for the moose.
You can never really appreciate their true size until you see them in comparison to something @1:53 . Moose are basically the same size as an s10 pick-up lol.
Big as the truck
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Julie.
His dinner table must have been slightly bear that night, and thank you for not putting music on here nature has the best tunes
Hermosos los gemelos,y hermosa la mamá que madraza cómo defiende a sus bebés❤️❤️
I was at a higher vantage point and the action happened around that spot. I only had to move a few feet the entire episode.
Nice work .. nature at its best
Did the moose get away?
Jody Bateman looked like it.
Jody Bateman I think the water caused for the bear to lose their sent !! 🙏
Bear: Oh, those two young moose look mighty delicious. But their doggone momma is there. I don't know, she looks pretty big to me. Maybe if I just pretend to sit back and act like I'm chilling out she won't notice me. Then if she gets momentarily distracted I can pounce on for the kill!
Momma Moose: I see you bear! I know what you're up to, you're not fooling me one bit! Now get out of here before I get really mad! Get!
Also bear: i am still feelin it from the last time a mama moose stomped the sh't outta me , , true story.

Young bear sizing up the cow's response. Bear's body language was more submission or pretending to be disinterested. Animals have their own cues with one another and threat assessment. Often prey will sense a predatory cue verses a just passing through cue. People haven't quite developed this primal sense due to our hyper cognitive reasoning.
Wrong. Women have that sense.
Well, here's one primitive instinct that humans have not lost, fortunately. It's that feeling that someone is watching you. You might get the heebie-jeebies or the hair on the back of your neck sticks up. That 'feeling' is right on & has been proven by scientists with the sophisticated brain testing we have now. So don't ever brush this feeling away when dismissing it may prove your peril or demise.
Very unfair that many times, Mothers have to confront the dangerous and cruel World by their own. God bless those brave Moms.
That bear looks like a hound dog sniffin the ground 😂 albeit a much larger & ferocious hound dog
Bears have more powerful noses than any and all dogs.
This grizzly is too young to prey...he is just learning Chase..ambush & attack...
How did you keep up with it for so long
Can you enable embedding on this video? I'd like to share it.
I had to go to the bathroom twice because of the waterfall.
وقت الحرج مايداهم صماصم الروس
I mean, what exactly is this grizzly afraid of? Is a female moose more dangerous than I think, or is that just a young, inexperienced bear?
He may have been trying to get the mother to chase him away from the calves so he could catch one without a fight.
Wow... !!! My best friend, Great... We liked and enjoyed to the end. Thanks Have a happy day! Keep it up! +thumb up3!
Thank you!
I know how that bear feels. I stalked a deer and was chased away by a racoon.
I'm surprised a grizzly would flee an unhorned moose. It must know something I don't.
Bcz grizzly was too young...he was just learning to prey....
Yeah. A hoof stomping.
