  • The Thrill of the Find: Murals and Mysteries of the Maya
    Wednesday, January 21, 2015
William Saturno, PhD, assistant professor of archaeology, Boston University; director, Proyecto San Bartolo/Xultún, Instituto de Antropologia e Historia, Guatemala; research associate, Peabody Museum, Harvard University
While seeking refuge from the grueling heat of the Guatemalan jungle, William Saturno crawled down a looter’s trench to rest in the shade. He casually turned on his flashlight and gazed up at 2,000-year old Maya murals in the site now known as San Bartolo. Nearly a decade later but only five miles away, Saturno and his student Max Chamberlain uncovered an earthen mound hiding a Maya house adorned by murals unlike any ever found before. Enjoy tales of Saturno’s adventures and discoveries, and learn what these stunning murals reveal about the Maya, their lives, and their society.

Okay, this guy is good. Something about how he talks helps me focus (bipolar with ADHD symptoms). Almost didn't click thinking it'd be dry. Love it, want more. I'm impressed!

Maybe you ought to speak to someone about your diagnosis, because I don’t believe that he has any extra special scruples for giving lectures. Although, he IS VERY entertaining, no? I’m only saying that I don’t think he is special, I believe YOU are the special one! After all, only intelligent people would listen to a Harvard Professor give lecture and describe it as interesting. You’re probably just bored of the monotony of having to focus on dull people and you’re being missed by the more intelligent people who aren’t so common in your day to day. I truly hope and wish for your good fortune in your life by being surrounded by wholesome and entertainingly intelligent people!

Absolutely fascinating discovery. I was unaware of these incredible murals. I have been to Bonampok and they were mismaged and degraded, but still amazing. These murals are off the charts both informationally and hustorically! Thank you for your outstanding work.

Lidar discovered Mayas were conquered by Teotihuacan Empire. Maya Cultures were much influenced by them and the Olmecs.
