Only saw them once at Wembley on the "Welcome Back My Friends" tour, absolutely brilliant. On your top 3 I might swap 2 and 3 but Trilogy will always be number 1.
You get SO many BONUS points for utilizing the finale of 'Hoedown' as the outro for your video. Trilogy is very, very strong. In my opinion it contains Carl Palmer's cleanest drumming and as a virtuoso he has multiple high points...including his controlled, rubbery sound on 'Sheriff'. Greg Lake - as a young man - had a marvelous voice. Not my favorite progressive rock band but ELP demands great respect for their musicianship. Cheers!
Haha! I had to put Hoedown in there! Thank you, yes, I couldn't agree more about Carl Palmer's drumming on Trilogy. Thank you so much for watching my videos and commenting, it's much appreciated!
My list is 1. Trilogy 2. Brain Salad Surgery 3. ELP 4. Tarkus 5. Long Beach 6. Works 2 7. Works 1 8. Black Moon 9. Hot seat Note: my favourite album by far in Elp's catalogue is the majestic live album Welcome Back My Friends: their best songs played in the best way
Starman, you have done a pretty good job of summing up ELP, which was probably the third best prog group after Yes and Genesis. Agree, Trilogy was the best. Great Lake felt the same way. It has their finest track and concert fave "Hoedown," an utter tour de force for a trio, and their finest ballad "From the Beginning." The title track is also wonderful. Agree, Brain Salad Surgery is their second best on the strength of the "Karn Evil 9" suite and the "Still You Turn Me On" ballad. Third for me would be Works 1, which was most exciting when it came out. The Piano Concerto is a triumph for Keith Emerson, particularly the third movement. Greg Lake's side is strong, especially with "C'est La Vie." Palmer's "Tank" remake was an improvement and other tracks like "Food for Your Soul" were most enjoyable. Fourth would be the ELP debut album on the strength of "Take a Pebble" and "Tank," in particular. Fifth would be Works II on the strength of "I Believe in Father Christmas." Beyond that, I never listened to Tarkus or Pictures at an Exhibition much so I may be missing something there. As for the others, they don't really matter.
I know: Pictures at an Exhibition is a “live” album, hence it’s not on your list. But I really think it should be, cause it’d all original material not available anywhere else. It’s my #1 ELP favorite.
I agree. There are certain "live", albums that contain all new natural. An example would be Neil Young Time Fades Away. These type of live recording be included
My favorites in this order are trilogy, pictures at an exhibition, Brain Salad Surgery, their debut album, and of course tarkus and works volume one. I also like to welcome back my friends which I consider my number one live album next to pictures at an exhibition. Everything else they did I could care less about.
I had heard that the shorter tracks were to be used for a Greg Lake solo album but when they were forced to doba ELP it allowed them not to have to write as many new songs. I once saw Carl at a solo gig snd gr jokingly apologize for Love Beach
Pictures At an Exhibition has been recorded live. OK. But it contains material previously unreleased and for this reason it deserves to be considered an ELP album.
One comment I forgot to make regarding "An Officer and a Gentleman" on "Love Beach" is that Emerson plays a Fender Rhodes Electric Piano for the first and only time ever that I know of. I always wondered why he didn't play one more often. I can image how great it would have sounded on some earlier pieces like Tarkus. Perhaps he wanted to avoid it because many other keyboard players were using one extensively, particularly in Jazz and Fusion music, i.e. Jan Hammer, Chick Corea (RIP), Herbie Hancock, etc. That would have been one of my questions for him if I ever met him. I have a 1972 Fender Rhodes Mark 1 Stage 73 and I really love it. Here's a song from my second album that was inspired by Emerson: czcams.com/video/ljnCb1F2t7s/video.html
I was a huge fan of the band but assumed that after the Love Beach disaster, they were done. I had no idea they got back together until 2018. And all I can think is...why? As for ranking, I'd switch where you have their first and Trilogy. And where's Pictures at an Exhibition?!?!?
Edlp my favorite group since they first came on the scene. To me there first five albums and I'm including pictures at an exhibition will always be what I considered the true Emerson Lake and Palmer. I would like to say that of their later music the song titled something like when the windmills and apple blossoms in your mind I'll be your Valentine or something like that was really an outstanding song especially if you're into jazz-rock Fusion. Sorry if I butchered the title of the song because it's really a stupid name for a song but the instrumentation in that track is top-notch and reminds me a lot of the mahavishnu orchestra or Return to Forever. Everything else 1977 and after sounded to me like a total different band and was a huge disappointment after Brain Salad Surgery.
I complment you on including Pictures Ive seen other ELP rankings where it was skipped I get that to a point but some live albuns contain all new material such as Time Fades Away by Neil Young
For me, it's 4.Self titled, 3, Brain Salad Surgery, 2.Tarkus, and of course their masterpiece 1. Trilogy. Pretty much it for me. Cheers!...good review.
I think ranking albums is not an accurate way to assess ELP. If you were a teenager when their first album was released as I was, it would come down to the impression each song made on you, which is different for younger people listening to them decades later. In the early '70's there was so much incredible music come from the Rock genre at such an accelerated pace, it was mind boggling. I was blown away hearing their debut album open with a Bartok piece, which I was familiar with already because I was studying piano. I agree that "Love Beach" was weak except for "An Officer and a Gentleman". Works Volume 1 was mostly great except for a few Lake and Palmer pieces. Emerson's Piano Concerto and Pirates were superb. It's hard for me to rank their albums because each of their greatest songs can stand alone. Most of Tarkus was great. Trilogy had only a few songs I would say were outstanding. Brain Salad Surgery contained 3 pieces that were great, Jerusalem, Toccata and Karn Evil 9 2nd impression. I saw them in 1973 when Emerson was wearing his armadillo-like outfit, plus he was very thin and his face was rather strange, then throw in the bizarre looking giant Modular Moog with its alien sounds, their complex songs and I saw and heard something downright otherworldly, something I had never again experienced. Next, I saw them in 1977 and it was an outstanding performance even though they dropped the orchestra. Bottom line is, you had to be their when it unfolded to truly appreciate ELP.
Thank you for watching and your comments! I am very jealous that you got to experience this music first hand when it was new. I totally agree in regards to ranking albums. I have been moving away from that and focusing more on rating individual albums on their own. Thank you again.
While I'd agree their last two albums aren't as good or as legendary as their classic 70's era, I don't think the albums are as bad as some claim. They have a few good tracks I think. I personally like Works 1 more than Works 2. Brain Salad Surgery has always been my favorite. Their debut is a very close second, and Tarkus being a close third. Not much separates the top 3 for me. But yeah, interesting ranking overall.
+1 for Black Moon! I understand the strong fan dislike for Love Beach and In the Hot Seat, but I never understood the dislike for Black Moon.
Před 3 lety+2
Not much to argue here, really. I agree with others who mention you should have included Pictures at an Exhibition, since it is all new material; the fact that they recorded it in front of an audience, rather than in a studio, should not be important. In fact, I think there is a bootleg of a studio recording out there, but they just thought the live recording was stronger.
Good ranking and I generally agree, more or less1 ;-) 1. Brain Salad Surgery (absolute top, the rest don't come even close for me! 👌🥰👍) 2-4. Self Titled, Tarkus, Trilogy - tied/can't choose, all fantastic and all have about equal strengths and weaknesses IMHO! 5. Works Vol 1 - I've long thought it would have been a stronger album with just one or two solo songs from each member on one side and then side 2 with Fanfare and Pirates. A strong side 1 might have been just the 3rd Movement Emerson's Piano Concerto, Palmer's The Enemy God and Two Part Invention, and Lake's C'est La Vie and Closer to Believing? 6. Love Beach - I give the album cover a generous D- 😁 and Lake's short songs are all fairly meh but Canario is fantastic and Memoirs is lovely and I listen to both far more than anything on the following albums. 7. Black Moon - lacking energy and often plodding, it's still a solid album and much more listenable start to finish than the following two (and even more than Love Beach but . . .) 8. Works Vol 2 - I LOVE cuts Brain Salad Surgery and Father Christmas, don't really care for most of the others and HATE Tiger In A Spot Light! 😅 9. In the Hot Seat - If this music had been done by completely unknown musicians, I probably wouldn't judge it so harshly but when I think that these are the same lads that did The Barbarian, Take A Pebble, Tank, Tarkus, Baba Yaga, Great Gates Of Kiev, Endless Enigma, Trilogy, Abaddon's Bolero, Toccata, Karn Evil 9 . . . . . . 🥺😔
Thank you for watching and commenting! You make very good points regarding each of their albums yourself. Also, good point regarding In the Hot Seat...
Pretty spot on, except I would have ranked the Debut album 3 and Tarkus 4 but the top 4 all were killer IMO. The Works albums were not strong start to finish but had good moments and the live shows with the 63 piece orchestra were epic (saw the one at Soldier Field Chicago). Love beach was a bit of an embarrassment and the ones after that not even very listenable and I loved the band.
My favourite band! My ranking would be; 9. In The Hot Seat 8. Black Moon 7. Works Volume 1 6. Love Beach 5. Emerson, Lake & Palmer 4. Works Volume 2 3. Trilogy 2. Brain Salad Surgery 1. Tarkus Great commentary btw

@@Starman-zi9tl hey thanks for replying, I do appreciate Content Creators that takes the time to interact with viewers and for that I subbed. Nice car btw, is that a Beamer?
I never agree with these sort of listings and think it a total waste of time, however in this instance I have to acknowledge that this guy's list is pretty much what I would have come up with. Of course, when it comes to Tarkus, ELP1, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery... well, how do you sort 4 masterworks out except by all being ranked number 1?
Thank you for watching and commenting! You make an excellent point regarding their 4 masterworks. That's why now, instead of ranking, I use a star based rating system so, for example all 4 of those albums would be 5/5 stars in my opinion. Thank you again for watching!
Thank you for watching and commenting! I debated back and forth whether or not to include it or not. I ultimately just left is with the ELP(almer). Great point though!
I agree. It's an ELP album in all but the name. If Carl was on I think it would have still sounded the same. I saw this tour and it was really not much different from EL Palmer tours.
@edljnehan2811 I agree so it could have near the top.worst titles but I think it should still have been in the ranking If the had a regular band name and Cozy was the new drummer it would have been listed
@@seanjockel43 you know I hear what you're saying but listen something about Emerson Lake and Palmer is different. They took that name not so much to represent a band but to represent three musicians all together but separate and free to do their own thing within the context of the band. Do you know what I'm saying. Like when yes had different members they were still yes. When Deep Purple got Steve Morse on guitar they were still Deep Purple. But whenever Sand Lake and Palmer Got A Different Drummer they weren't Emerson Lake and Palmer anymore. Having the three of them is what made up that band where Emerson Lake and Powell were a separate and different band. They were not Emerson Lake and Palmer. I guess what I'm trying to say is Emerson Lake and Palmer were made up of what each musician did in the band together and on their own at the same time on stage. Probably confusing the f*** out of you but if you think about it I think you'll see what I'm saying. I guess they were made up by the sum of its parts.
While not exactly my favorite prog band, nor one i come back to too often, I sometimes just get random cravings to listen to ELP and only ELP. I understand what makes them great i could never just get behind it as much. From what i listened to, best to meh 1: Pictures At an Exhibition 2: Self titled 3: Trilogy 4: Brain Salad Surgery 5: Works Vol 1 6: Tarkus 7: Works Vol 2 8: Black Moon
My opinion: Bottom two - In The Hot Seat, Love Beach (both contract pieces, but not totally horrible) Decent - Black Moon, Works 2 Excellent - Works 1 The best - ELP, Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery In all fairness, Black Moon and In The Hot Seat could have been combined into one great album - same with Works 2 and Love Beach.
I definitely agree with your Best list. That's an interesting point you bring up about taking the best of 2 less than great albums to form a good album. Although, Love Beach is a guilty pleasure for me... I "shouldn't" like it but I do. Haha Same thing with Yes's Talk album.
@@robertmounsey4682 Self titled is honestly the best. No filler, they didn’t overstep in trying to be as ambitious as possible. Not to mention every song is pretty good and it’s their most consistent album.
I absolutely love Tarkus, but for the most part I find ELP lacking.... something. Soul? Feeling? I mean, every note is perfect and precise, but it never grooves or makes me feel anything. I think its the keyboards.... doesn't hold a candle to what Rick Wakeman, Richard Wright or Tony Banks bring to the table. I have great respect for their musicianship though.
To each their own. ELP makes me groove like a madman and feelings/soul are abundant in the music! In contrast, when I listen to Nirvana, I just fall asleep. It's slow, trudgey, simplistic and boring compared to the awesome onslaught of ELP. Also, not all of ELP's notes are perfect and precise...
Man you are way way way off-base on that one. Keith Emerson literally blows those guys away. I've seen yes open up for Emerson Lake and Palmer in 1971 and there was just no contest. Emerson did it all and did it faster more precise he Incorporated Jazz and classical along with that huge modular Moog synthesizer. I don't even considered Wakeman as second place that would go to t vanleer all of focus. No dude Emerson made it to the top of the mountain Heights those others never reached.
Okay I get it now. I can tell by your picture you're just a kid. So you really don't know what the hell you're talkin about when it comes to mr. Emerson anyway.
3 This was a band with Keith and Keith and Carl and Robert Berry in Greg's spot. The 11:35 album is terrible. I saw them once at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary at MSG. They were there to represent ELP.

I agree with the top 5, but what about 1971 Pictures at an Exhibition and ELPowell’s 1986 album? I saw them live in 86, Emerson was fire that night!
Yes, good point, I was trying to stick with just ELPalmer studio albums. However, I am a fan of both the albums you mentioned as well.
@@Starman-zi9tl hey thanks for replying, I do appreciate Content Creators that takes the time to interact with viewers and for that I subbed. Nice car btw, is that a Beamer?
@@dvil9 You're very welcome thank you for subscribing! That is my 2003 Mustang GT, (aka the other woman) :)
@@Starman-zi9tlI like that I think you're spot on
Truth be told though, Pictures is their best album, so leaving it off seems pointless.
Yes, in hindsight, I should have included it, as it is one of their best for sure.
You forgot the "Emerson, Lake & Powell" album released in 1986, on which they toured with drummer Powell, and without Palmer.
@@seanjockel43cozy Powell was not nearly as good as the great Carl Palmer
@edljnehan2811 I agree so it could have near the top.worst titles but I think it should still have been in the ranking
If the had a regular band name and Cozy was the new drummer it would have been listed
From what i listened to, best to meh
1: Pictures At an Exhibition
2: Self titled
3: Trilogy
4: Brain Salad Surgery
5: Works Vol 1
6: Tarkus
7: Works Vol 2
8: Black Moon
I get what you're saying about them and can relate. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@Starman-zi9tl Anyone who relates to this comment should not be rating their albums. Why?
@@kratino Hello, I was just relating meaning I know that ELP is is not everyone's cup of tea. Not necessarily agreeing with the comment itself.
Do you play the the harmonica, the Banjo or the ukelele RSVP
Sorry, I do not.
My opinion:
Bottom two - In The Hot Seat, Love Beach (both contract pieces, but not totally horrible)
Decent - Black Moon, Works 2
Excellent - Works 1
The best - ELP, Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery
In all fairness, Black Moon and In The Hot Seat could have been combined into one great album - same with Works 2 and Love Beach.
I definitely agree with your Best list. That's an interesting point you bring up about taking the best of 2 less than great albums to form a good album. Although, Love Beach is a guilty pleasure for me... I "shouldn't" like it but I do. Haha Same thing with Yes's Talk album.
For some reason, I never had the same affection for ELP as I have for Genesis and Yes. Love Beach really was a dog though.
1. Brain Salad Surgery
2. Trilogy
3. Tarkus
4. Self Titled
5. Works Vol 2
6. Black Moon
7. Works Vol 1
8. In the Hot Seat
9. Love Beach
@@robertmounsey4682 Self titled is honestly the best. No filler, they didn’t overstep in trying to be as ambitious as possible. Not to mention every song is pretty good and it’s their most consistent album.
Allow me to thank you for doing proper research and pronouncing HR Giger's name correctly. He is not Geiger!
I have great respect for their musicianship though.
youre an idiot nuff said....

This was a band with Keith and Keith and Carl and Robert Berry in Greg's spot. The 11:35 album is terrible.
I saw them once at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary at MSG. They were there to represent ELP.
