I'm not an opera aficionado by any means. But when I first saw him sing this song I was enthralled. The effortless power, the tone and the phenomenal breath control amazed me. I don't know where David Hobson is rated in the world of opera. But having since watched and listened to many other versions sung by well known international names, his appears to my untrained ears to be the most pure and spectacular. Almost none finish on that final high note. Nor repeat the word 'away' in that towering note towards the end of the final verse. But what impressed and astonished me the most, is how he seems to be able to do it all with such ease.
oh, my goodness... thanks to Mr. David Hudson, now I can sing The Holy City finally. in church, I sang this song 24 years ago, and I already forgot some tunes.
I accidentally came across David Hobson's 2002 version of this hymn, and enjoy his rendition then and now. I especially appreciated the fact that he included the second verse this year. It's interesting to listen to the various performances and hear how his voice has become richer over the years.
Absolutely brilliant..hard to find a good voice singing this great hymn.

Eine erstklassige Interpretation. Hier singt das Herz zusammen mit einer grandiosen Stimme, und begleitet von einem phantastischen Orchester, das bestens aufgehoben ist unter einem super Dirigenten.
Love how it is an elegant operatic rendition of quite a serious carol and then BAM! "Thank you! have a very merry Christmas" in a super Australian accent.
I live in Perth WA and flew over to Melbourne in 2010 to be part of the crowd that packed the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. An evening not to forget, the orchestra wasnt as bad as it seems on CZcams
I am glad that this version has the middle verse. So did this year's version (David Hobson, Carols in the Domain - Sydney). The middle verse is important IMO.
Actually, I got that wrong, it was the Melbourne Carols (Sydney tends to be a few days earlier - the weekend before, while the Melbourne ones are Xmas Eve).
Wait, this is a Christmas carol? I performed this at the Tower of David Museum this year at a commemoration of General Allenby's march into Jerusalem, as part of a Beersheba Centenary tour.
@melbsteve Incidently - unless I misunderstood its meaning - the acronym you included in your first post was what seemed 'strangely inappropriate' for a comment on the choice of sacred songs, even if you were disappointed!
@melbsteve The Hallelujah Chorus is hardly a carol either, nor is The Holy City - in fact they have little to do with Christmas but more to do with Easter! The Lord's Prayer (in whatever form) is an acceptable inclusion for any quasi-religious occasion, and isn't just for church use. Sadly, traditional carols such as Once in Royal David's City, have been in the minority at CbC for years now, replaced instead by jazzed-up modern versions, or Christmas-themed secular songs, 'sung' by pop stars.
I love to hear him sing, what a voice, too bad the orchestra is so loud, it's his VOICE I came to hear not their overbearing sound, almost drowning out the nuances of his singing- but still his voice is strong and powerful so I understand the desire to pull out all stops when he sings- nevertheless great performance by a wonderful man -
The overbearing sound of the musicians the fault of the sound mixer.I had a bloody trumpet ruining my hearing one time but luckily the backing singers came in unplanned and assisted. The sound man got a bit of a blast leter
@melbsteve Strange, inappropriate remark! What's wrong with The Lord's Prayer, beautifully sung? Yes, David has done The Holy City many, many times - and even recorded it - so maybe he felt it was time for a change this year.
Lovely, Just Lovely! Mr. Hobson has a such a Magical Voice that is able to make us feel as if We Are Literally Standing In The Holy City, JERUSALEM.
I don't think I have ever heard this song without tears. Such a wonderful song.
David Hobson is a Legend and has the greatest voive i ever heard. Goosebumps.

Christmas is coming and i am looking for favourite Carols to listen to for the whole of the day. Thank you David.
Absolutely World class. It does not get any better than this. David Hobson is da man.

Best rendition! His voice is so powerful and when he sings "Jerusalem" he belts it out!
David you have made this wonderful song your own, congratulations.

David owns this beautiful Christian song -- he usually sings it on these Carol nights. God bless him and also the poster of it on youtube.
the most beautiful piece of music.
Great voice David. Thank you.

Absolutely fantastic and I;m not Christian. It has brought me to tears
Love it! Great voice! Thank you David!
You are absolutely right. I definitely react this way as well, no matter how many times I have listened to it.
Love how it is an elegant operatic rendition of quite a serious carol and then BAM! "Thank you! have a very merry Christmas" in a super Australian accent.
Simply awesome!
looking forward in seeing him on Carols By Candlelight this year.
DIVINE.....Thank you so much for sharing.
Sensational, close to the peak of his singing powers here.

Magnifique!
Fabulous as always...Sue
Praise God!!!

Pure joy to hear thank you for posting this

lindo sem palavras..
@melbsteve I was watching it on Tv, and also hoped he'd sing The Holy City. The Lord's Prayer was good, but this is beautiful.
Actually, I got that wrong, it was the Melbourne Carols (Sydney tends to be a few days earlier - the weekend before, while the Melbourne ones are Xmas Eve).
Jeg søger la boheme med David hopson
@vrute1 Agreed! David Hobson IS world class, as is this performance - so why would anyone flag what is a perfectly reasonable comment as spam?
Good on you son!
Wait, this is a Christmas carol? I performed this at the Tower of David Museum this year at a commemoration of General Allenby's march into Jerusalem, as part of a Beersheba Centenary tour.
I think you have to mean it, to make this song sound good.
@cepsluvr Yes, please do explain your remark!
DRUMS!!! :)
@cepsluvr Care to elaborate?

It's the drum thing that is so unnecessary.

A very ordinary voice. Needs to be bigger. Overall production is good though.
An ordinary voice!!!??? You have no idea you dill. David’s voice is simply beautiful and cherished by thousands
This rendition is very cheesy.
Magnifique!
