Tree work: poor judgement can have big consequences

  • #Tree Removal of a huge messmate gumtree in the Dandenong Ranges. the tree was about 40 metres high and situated right above a house
it took a while to get the throwline into the tree, as we kept getting tangles, so we went for a lower shot and I had to flip line the rest of the way to the top.
I setup quite poorly for the first few rigs with my climbing line wanting to pull me the same direction as the rigging line.
the second branch I Rigged I didn't have my pole belt attached as the rigging line would have been rubbing over it. it was not good work positioning and I swung with the branch I cut and the rigging line pulled tight pushing me into the tree.
A quite scary moment that happened so quickly after a lapse in judgement and a complacent set up of the rig.
I climbed back to the top repositioned my climbing line and rigging line and the rest of the tree came down beautifully.

Love how you took the extra time to talk through what you were doing. We can all learn things here and there especially for us new up and comers

Awesome! You make it look easy.
I've seen another fellow use fine (small) wooden dowels for the largest chunks of wood. He puts them into the kerf and they act like roller pins which can save some strain on pushing the large pieces off. He paints them neon orange so they are easy to collect at the bottom and the cost is pretty cheap anyway if they break or go missing.

Very nicely done. It always used to piss me off the clients did not bother to move their stuff out the way, so we had to deal with all of that as well as meeting the scheduled time, so I ended up putting it in my terms and conditions that the time spent moving things out the way would be billed as an extra. I have to say that I would have been tempted to use a crane with this one, but maybe access was an issue. Good content and a valuable message in the caption.

One word. Aminal!!😂, you make it look easy to get all the top off that by dinner time. Being a bit of a small guy around 65-70kg... it is a bloody workout pulling up blocks and rigging lines/saws. Must be ball ache on those tall mountain ashes. Fair play👏

Indeed. Wonder why they put buildings on its roots and thereby killed the tree?
